Meeting the man's calculative gaze, unease bubbled up in Davina's eyes.
However, the fury of being abandoned by Barnard ultimately eclipsed her rationality. "Is your boat fast? Can you get me to the port immediately?"
She knew Barnard had liquidated massive amounts of assets. He had hundreds of millions of dollars on hand—money she couldn't spend in several lifetimes. She could not afford to lose her golden goose.
Seeing that she had taken the bait, the man patted his chest confidently. "Don't you worry. I, Caleb Vance, am a veteran of the sea. Just hand over five hundred dollars, and I guarantee I'll get you there."
It was a reasonable price, and he hadn't tried to extort her. Even though Davina felt something was off about Caleb's eyes, she agreed without hesitation and followed him onto a dilapidated wooden boat.
The cabin was covered in a thick layer of dust, clearly indicating it hadn't touched water in a long time.
If Davina had retained even an ounce of logic, she would have sensed the danger. But her mind was entirely consumed by how she was going to confront Barnard once she found him. She merely muttered a few complaints before falling silent.
The small boat departed from the isolated island.
It slowly made its way toward the open sea.
The rowing was unsteady, making the boat rock back and forth.
Once they were a significant distance from the island, the boat came to a halt.
Davina looked around at the endless expanse of water, and panic finally registered on her face. "Why... why did you stop? What are you doing?"
Caleb smirked. "Well, well, you're not completely stupid after all. Since you figured it out, let's have a nice little chat.
"Your previous man already dumped you. What's the point of chasing after him?
"Look at me, I'm still unmarried. How about you stay and be my wife? I promise I'll treat you right."
He was an aging bachelor.
He was also notoriously despised in the village.
Whenever a woman lost her husband or a girl couldn't get married, he was always the first to eagerly offer himself.
But he was incredibly lazy, and everyone in the village knew his true colors. No one was willing to go anywhere near him.
Finding a wife to carry on the Vance family legacy had become a twisted obsession for Caleb.
Seeing Davina today, he immediately thought he had struck gold and formulated a plan to corner her.
She was a refugee abandoned by her own group; no one would come looking for her.
"You look older than me, and your face is nothing special. If I wasn't desperate for a wife, I wouldn't even look twice at you.
"Those rich folks aren't stupid. They'd never marry a woman like you.
"Save your breath. The lies I've told in my life outnumber the breaths you've taken.
"Just give me a straight answer: yes or no. A marriage needs two willing participants. I really don't want to force you."
Every single word he said brutally tore down Davina's self-worth.
Hearing that he was threatening to use force, Davina trembled violently. "Don't you dare! You..."
Before she could finish, Caleb violently yanked her arm and pinned her to the deck. "Looks like you really won't listen. I guess I'll just have to make you obey."
His hands immediately roamed toward Davina's pockets, quickly confiscating all her cash and bank cards. He shamelessly declared, "We're getting married anyway. A woman doesn't need to carry cash. I'll hold onto this for you.
"Now it's time to get down to business. The Vance family legacy can't end with me."
He was remarkably strong, pinning Davina down so she couldn't move an inch.
Davina's eyes were overflowing with terror, fury, shock, and a million other emotions.
