An hour later, Camilla was already sitting in Lance’s car.
It was a weekday, and even the old abbey felt strangely quiet.
She hugged a box to her chest, trailing right behind Lance. He clearly knew his way around here; he navigated the winding paths like he’d done this a hundred times before, and she simply followed.
Soon, they reached a quiet little courtyard that felt almost deserted.
Only when they got to the door did Lance finally stop to look back at her, smirking. “You’ve barely said a word and you’re sticking as close as a shadow. What’s wrong, Camilla? Worried I might sell you off?” He raised an eyebrow, teasing. “Honestly, you’ve already come all this way with me. Isn’t it a little late to start being nervous?”
Camilla stared at him, still a bit out of it. She barely had time to process anything. It hadn’t even been twenty minutes since she replied to Lance’s message before he appeared at the hospital. Next thing she knew, she was climbing into his car and coming here, without even understanding what was happening.
She had also overheard a few words from Lance’s driver that made her realize Lance had only just flown back from overseas.
He was still in a sharp suit, though the top button of his shirt was undone and his collarstood open, showing a deep V at his chest. For someone in business wear, he carried a kind of carelessly cool energy, like he couldn’t be bothered with strict formality.
The sunlight caught on his perfect features, highlighting a thread of weariness in his eyes, but it didn’t take away from his good looks. In fact, with those slightly upturned, mischievous eyes, he seemed even more relaxed and mysterious.
Camilla finally spoke, almost embarrassed. “Lance, with your connections, you could’ve just sent me an address. You’re a busy man, you know. No need to come with me in person.”
She knew her own status. There was no way she could trouble someone like Lance, not when he clearly needed rest.
Lance just stretched and shrugged. “The old guy inside doesn’t help out just anyone. But anyway, we’re here now. Let’s go in.”
The wooden gate creaked open. Inside the courtyard was almost empty except for a young monk sweeping the paving stones. There was an elderly man sunning himself in a rocking chair, his hair shock-white.
When he saw Lance, the old man struggled upright, leaning forward to get a better look. He stared at Lance, surprise warming his face. “Well, now. What brings you to see me today?”
“Carney, this is serious. I need you to look at something.” Lance glanced at Camilla, signaling her to hand over the box. She did, still reeling from how he addressed the man.
Carney... Grandpa Darwin’s little brother. Camilla knew about him, but until now he’d just been a legend. Supposedly part of the Charles family, but no one in their social circles had actually seen him.
Without Lance, she never would have guessed that the famous Carney was the abbey’s head monk.
Carney’s whole face changed the second he took the box. Even before opening it, he started shaking his head, his expression darkening.
Davina had sworn it was just a protective charm. Even though Camilla hadn’t totally believed her, she never thought it would be something like this.
Jasper was just a child. That woman’s schemes were terrifying. Sticking to Barnard wasn’t enough—she even wanted to chain Daisy and Jasper together for life, and with something this cruel.
Camilla pushed down her fear and asked quickly, “My son hasn’t touched it. Can you help me break the spell?”
Carney’s eyes widened in surprise. “Your son? You have a son? Then you and he are...”
Before Carney could finish, Lance stepped in. “I’m good friends with her son. Quit overthinking and just get rid of the damn thing.”
Carney eyed Lance up and down, his expression growing more and more suspicious.
‘Good friends with her son?’ Yeah, right, old instincts told him. Lance was definitely up to something.
Carney shuffled over to Lance and gave him a firm pat on the shoulder. “Quit joking around. Show some respect for your elders, will you?”
