Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 91

Camilla was having a pretty good day. On her way home, she even picked up the little cakes Jasper had been raving about. Dinner was already waiting for her when she walked through the door. Susan was curled up in the corner, glued to her phone and grinning like she was in on a secret.

As soon as Camilla set her things down, Susan pulled her aside and whispered, “Camilla, you have no idea. Something huge just happened at Saddlebrook Estates. Barnard blew up at Davina today, really let her have it, and then made Jackson put her under house arrest.”

Susan flashed her phone at Camilla, trying to show her a video. Although she didn’t work at Saddlebrook Estates anymore, Susan had spent four or five years there and still kept in touch with the staff. If something big went down, you could be sure she’d hear about it.

Camilla only gave the screen a quick look, just long enough to see Davina’s face full of hurt and indignation, then turned away. Sensing Camilla wasn’t interested, Susan slipped her phone back in her pocket. She muttered, almost to herself, “I always thought Barnard would never get mad at Davina. Guess he’s human after all.”

Get mad? Did he really care enough to be angry? Camilla couldn’t help feeling it was all a bit of a joke. Davina had caused such a scene lately and completely embarrassed Barnard. But in the end, he hadn’t really punished her. That blind favoritism said plenty about where Davina stood in his life.

Camilla didn’t want her mood ruined by any of it. She changed the subject, “How’s Jasper today, Susan?”

Susan caught the hint and quickly switched gears. “He’s great. He made plans with Lance for tomorrow and everything. Don’t worry, Camilla, he’s fine.”

“Lance?” Camilla asked.

“Yeah. I overheard a bit while Jasper was on the phone. Lance is coming to pick him up tomorrow morning,” Susan explained.

Jasper, still at the coffee table munching on one of his little cakes, perked up as soon as he heard his name, “Mom, I told Lance I’d take the dogs out with him! My leg doesn’t hurt anymore. Please can I take Snow out for a walk?”

Ever since Snow joined their family, it had been nonstop emergencies—either Snow was in the vet or Jasper was in the hospital. Jasper barely had a chance to even play with his puppy.

“What time are you meeting Lance?” Camilla asked. “I’ll drive you over.”

She still hadn’t properly thanked Lance for helping at the monastery. Now he was volunteering to watch Jasper for a day. The least she could do was show up and say hello.

The following morning, Camilla packed up some things for Jasper, then drove him over to Lance’s place. Jackson was already waiting outside, ready to help get Jasper’s wheelchair out of the car.

Jackson, standing nearby, jumped in to explain, “Don’t mind Lance, Jasper. He’s always like this. The dog really is named Dog.”

Jasper looked genuinely confused, “But Dog isn’t a real name. Every dog is a dog! Shouldn’t he have a special name? Like Snow?”

“I’ll think about it,” Lance said, then motioned for the Malamute to come closer. The dog obediently flopped down next to Jasper.

Jackson brought over a little cart with a harness, just the right size for a kid to sit in, and attached it to the dog’s neck. Lance grinned, “Ready to be a Wind Chaser today, my little treasure?”

Camilla had seen the cart and figured out what was about to happen. Sure enough, Lance scooped Jasper up and settled him in the cart. “Go on, Dog, show my little treasure how fast you can move.”

The Malamute seemed to understand every word. He gave a howl and set off at top speed around the yard, with Jackson jogging alongside, steadying the cart as Jasper burst into delighted laughter.

Snow went wild with excitement, chasing after them as fast as her little legs could go.
