Do Not Fall For The Baseball Captains (Victoria and Elijah) novel Chapter 106

A sudden buzz against the mattress broke the silence.

My phone illuminated, the screen casting a pale light against the dark headboard.

My heart skipped a heavy beat when I saw his name flash across the top of the display.

I stared at it for a long, agonizing minute before my trembling thumb finally slid the screen open.

‘Hey, Zhen

I know I hurt you. And I’ll live forever punishing myself for it. I am not going to ask you to forgive me immediately, because I know I don’t deserve it right now, but I hope you someday do. I won’t stop trying, Victoria. I won’t give up until I earn your forgiveness and maybe… someday, your heart.

I’m truly sorry. There are no excuses for what I did except entirely selfish ones, ones which I never should have pushed through with.

But this message isn’t about me. It’s about you. Do you remember saying you’ll become a rich engineer so you can earn six figures and buy an apartment twice the size of mine?

I paused, a shaky breath escaping my lips. I could practically see him chuckling as he typed that line.

‘I need you to completely forget my dick asshole self for the next few days. You can resume punishing me later. Right now, you need to ace all your papers. Don’t let my mistakes ruin the work you’ve put in for four years.

I still care about you very much, Victoria. And I’m haunted every second by the fact that I made you hurt. It was the one thing I promised myself I would protect you from, and I became the source of it.

I’m sorry, baby girl.

Yours truly,

Elijah arrogant carter.

By the time I reached the final line, the tears streaming down my face felt heavy enough to fill ten barrels.

The serrated edges of the message tore right through the fragile shell I had built around myself over the last two days. leaving my chest completely exposed.

Yet, looking at that ridiculous, self-assigned sign-off, a tiny, involuntary smile broke through my tears.

He knew exactly what he was doing. He knew exactly how to reach past my anger, weaponising the deep familiarity we had built over time to remind me of what we are the verge of losing.

Elijah wasn’t wasn’t begging for an easy way out; he was letting me know he was going to stand there and take whatever punishment I handed down, for as long as it took.

I leaned my head back against the wall, the phone resting heavily against my palm.

I read the text over again, then a third time, the bright blue light of the screen burning into my eyes until the glowing letters began to blur and mix with the printed formulas on the textbook in front of me.

The pam hadn’t gone away, it was still there, a sharp, constant reminder of the lie, but for the first time in forty-eight hours, the suffocating yoke in the room felt just a little bit lighter.

I closed my eyes, his words repeating in the quiet of my mind.
