Do Not Fall For The Baseball Captains (Victoria and Elijah) novel Chapter 108

Chapter 108

He put a heavy emphasis on those last two words, glaring directly at me to make sure the point hit home.

Under any normal circumstances, I would have scowled, retorted, or kicked them all out of my apartment. But the arrogance had been completely drained out of me over the last three days.

I was entirely in the wrong, so I kept my mouth shut and just listened.

“Then you progress into an actual relationship,” Jace picked up, a small grin finally returning to his face. “Depending on what the Queen wants, of course. You’re on her clock now.”

Just like that, the heavy, suffocating atmosphere in the room shifted.

The guys took the reins, turning my disaster into a collaborative strategy session.

They started tossing out ideas, changing the mood from a grim interrogation into something lively.

Half the suggestions coming out of Nate’s mouth were so absurdly elaborate and stupid that we couldn’t help but laugh, the sound echoing off the high ceilings of the condo.

I just sat there, a faint smile touching my lips as I watched my best friends actively plotting how to help me win back the girl who had thoroughly captured my heart-and held me completely accountable for my actions.

Later that night, the condo was empty again.

I lay flat on my back in the center of my mattress after a long, cold shower, the bedroom illuminated only by the city lights filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

My eyes automatically drifted to the left side of the bed. Her side.

The sheet was perfectly smooth. Cold. I reached out, my fingers brushing against the empty fabric, a deep ache forming right behind my breastbone.

I missed her so much.

Lying there in the dark, it finally hit me how deep I was in this.

I realized exactly how much Victoria meant to me, and how deeply I respected her, because through all those weeks of her sharing this exact bed with me, not once had my primary instinct been about sex.

She was gorgeous, incredibly attractive, and entirely within arm’s reach every single night, but half the time I forgot that dynamic even existed.

Any sexual tension between us had come from our banter, from her sharp mind, and from the way she challenged me. I had just wanted her near me.

I let out a rough sigh, running my hands through my hair as I sat up. The restlessness was crawling under my skin.

I got out of bed and walked over to the built-in closet to pull out my suit for tomorrow’s presentation. As I slid the mirrored door open, my breath hitched.

Right there, hanging between two of my dark jackets, were a couple of her cardigans and a spare dress she had left behind.

The scent of strawberries immediately filled my nostrils, faint but unmistakable, clinging to the small corner of the

wardrobe.

A small, genuine smile touched my lips. She hadn’t packed everything.

Somehow, that tiny detail left a spark of hope in my chest. It meant she hadn’t erased me entirely yet.

She just needed time to heal, time to process the anger and forgive me, which I knew could take weeks.

What I did wasn’t good, and I hated myself for the look of pure disappointment she had given me before walking out of that

diner.

I sighed, gently closing the closet door to preserve the scent, and switched off the main light before climbing back into bed.

The moment my head hit the pillow, my phone buzzed on the nightstand. I reached for it, seeing a notification from the boys’ group chat.

It was a link from Miles, followed by a string of text from Nate detailing yet another ridiculous flash-mob style idea to win Victoria over.

I smiled, shaking my head in the dark as I closed the chat window.

But as I went to lock the screen, my eyes caught the pinned contact at the very top of my recent messages. Victoria.

Beneath her name, two tiny grey text bubbles suddenly appeared, dancing up and down.

Typing…

My heart skipped a beat entirely. My grip tightened on the aluminum edges of the phone as I sat straight up in bed, my eyes locked onto those moving bubbles.
