Nova walked into the kitchen on quiet feet, her bare soles making almost no sound against the polished tile.
Caleb was sitting on a high stool at the kitchen island, his back slightly hunched, both hands wrapped tightly around his phone. His thumb was completely still, locked over the glass as he stared down at the screen.
Curiosity pulled Nova closer. She leaned over his shoulder, her eyes dropping to the bright display.
It was a photo of Victoria.
It wasn’t a secret snapshot, either; it was a post straight from Elijah’s public page.
Victoria was caught mid-laugh, her hair blowing slightly across her face, sitting in the passenger seat of a car with Elijah’s large hand resting possessively over hers.
The caption was short, simple, and infuriatingly sweet.
A sharp sting bloomed right in the center of Nova’s chest. Jealousy, hot and bitter, threatened to make her mouth sour, but she forced a deep breath through her nose and swallowed it down.
She had spent months hanging around Caleb’s apartment, cooking his favorite meals, listening to him vent, and doing everything short of screaming in his face to make him realize she was right here.
Yet his eyes were still glued to a girl who had long since moved on.
Trying to play it off, Nova stepped around the island, making a show of moving toward the refrigerator.
“That photo of Victoria is really beautiful,” she offered, letting a light, airy laugh slip past her lips.
She braced herself for Caleb to flinch, to scramble and flip his phone face-down like a teenager caught doing something wrong. But he didn’t even blink. He didn’t move an inch.
Nova paused, her hand hovering over the silver fridge handle, her eyes drifting back to his face.
Caleb was staring at the screen with an intensity that made the hair on her arms stand up.
His jaw was clenched so tight the pale muscle bunched near his ear, his dark brows pulled down into a deep
crease.
The light from the phone cast strange shadows over his features.
He didn’t look like the sweet, slightly airheaded guy she had fallen for. He looked distant. He looked almost cruel.
“Caleb?” she called softly.
No response. His eyes didn’t even flicker in her direction.

“Caleb?” Nova repeated, her voice rising a notch.
Still nothing. He was completely lost in whatever dark spiral was churning in his head.

“Caleb!” she finally yelled, stepping forward and slamming her hand down on the edge of the granite counter.
He flinched hard, his fingers slipping off the smooth casing. The phone clattered against the hard surface of the island with a sharp clack before sliding to a stop near a bowl of fruit.
