A buzz broke the heavy silence of the kitchen.

Caleb grabbed the phone, sliding it into his pocket as he stood up from the stool. His long legs carried him toward the hallway, his mind already shifting gears toward the field.

Then he stopped, turning his head to look at Nova as if noticing her presence for the first time all day.

“How’d you come? And when?” he asked, his voice genuine in its confusion.

Nova’s arms dropped to her sides, her mouth falling open slightly as shock registered on her face.

“You didn’t just ask me that. I’ve been sitting on your couch all afternoon, Caleb.”

Caleb paused, his head tilting back slightly as he tried to piece together the last few hours.

The fog in his brain cleared just enough for him to realize she was telling the truth.

“Oh,” he exhaled, rubbing a palm over the back of his neck. “I’m sorry, Nova. A lot is going through my mind right now.” He gestured toward the front door.

“I’m leaving now for practice. You can lock the place up when you leave. Or wait for me? I don’t really know how long the drills are going to run today.”

Nova stared at him, the tightness in her chest spreading until it reached her throat. She took a quiet breath. her voice barely a whisper.

“I’ll just leave with you.”

Caleb gave her a brief, charming smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

“Great. I have practice in a few minutes, so I’m going to go change real quick.”

Without waiting for a reply, he turned around and disappeared down the hall toward his bedroom, shutting the door behind him.

Standing alone in the middle of his silent kitchen, Nova felt the tears finally break free. They rolled down her cheeks, hot and quiet, leaving wet tracks against her skin.

Unrequited feelings were a special kind of agony. Standing there in his dark kitchen, it finally made total sense why Victoria had given up on Caleb in the first place.

And now that she was completely out of reach, he suddenly wanted her back. How pathetic. How completely
