The heavy oak door clicked shut behind the doctor, leaving a suffocating quiet in its wake.

For what felt like ten full minutes, neither of us moved. Neither of us even dared to take a loud breath.
The small piece of paper with the official blood panel results sat on the edge of the mattress, its bold black ink screaming a reality that felt entirely surreal.
Pregnant.
My head was spinning so fast I felt dizzy all over again. I stared straight ahead at the plain white wall, my hands resting limp in my lap, completely frozen in shock.
Beside me, Elijah shifted. Slowly, carefully, he slid his broad arm around my shoulders, pulling me firmly against his side.
His chin came down to rest against the top of my head, his chest expanding as he let out a long, heavy breath.
“Hey,” he whispered softly, his fingers gently rubbing the outer edge of my arm.
That single word, spoken with so much quiet tenderness, broke the trance holding us back.
We both turned our heads at the exact same second, our eyes locking, searching each other’s faces for some kind of anchor.
“What are we going to do?” we asked simultaneously.
The exact same words, spoken at the exact same tempo.
A tiny, breathless laugh escaped my lips, and Elijah let out a soft huff of air, a faint smile briefly touching his mouth before reality settled right back over us.
“You go first,” Elijah murmured, his dark eyes searching mine.
“No, you,” I insisted, shaking my head slightly.
“Victoria,” he coaxed, his tone leaving no room for argument.
I scoffed softly, dropping my gaze from his face down to my own lap. Slowly, almost unconsciously, I brought my right hand up, letting my palm rest flat against my lower stomach.
There was no bump, no visible change whatsoever, but knowing a life, was taking root beneath my skin made my heart pound against my ribs.
“I don’t know what I want, Eli,” I confessed, my voice barely audible in the quiet room. I looked back up at him, my eyes shining with unshed tears.

We slid into a red vinyl booth near the back, away from the windows and any lingering eyes.
For the first hour, we barely mentioned the baby or the hospital.

We just sat across from each other, dipping crisp, salty fries into vanilla milkshakes, letting the overwhelming stress of the last forty–eight hours slowly drain out of our systems.
Elijah reached across the table, taking my hand in his, his thumb tracing slow patterns over my knuckles.

“I was so damn hurt. I felt like I had spent months stripping away every single wall I had, giving you access to my whole life, just for you to look at a fake screenshot and assume the worst of me. It felt like you were just waiting for me to fail you.”
“Do you have any idea how hard it was not to grab my keys and drive over to Adele’s the second your name popped up on my phone? I missed you so much it felt like I couldn’t breathe, but I was so angry, and I knew if I didn’t step back, we were just going to tear each other apart.”
“I’m sorry,” I whispered again, leaning across the table to press my forehead against his knuckles. “I’m so sorry,
I swallowed the lump in my throat, taking a deep, shuddering breath as the tears finally began to dry.
