The door closed behind me with a heavy click, followed by the unmistakable sound of the lock engaging.

I resisted the urge to look back.

The visiting room was small and quiet, divided in half by a thick pane of reinforced glass.

Trinity was already waiting on the other side.

The moment she saw me, her head snapped up.

Her eyes were red and swollen, as if she’d spent hours crying. They darted over my face before a shaky laugh escaped her.

She shot to her feet so quickly her chair scraped against the floor, then hurried to the glass, pressing both hands against it.

For a second, all she did was stare at me, her breathing uneven, like she couldn’t quite believe I was standing there.

“Elijah,” she breathed, her voice raspy and muffled through the small speaker grille embedded in the barrier. “You came. I knew you’d come. My mom said you wouldn’t, but I told her… I told her you loved me too much to leave me here.”

I stood near the door, my hands resting in the pockets of my jeans. Looking at her, I felt no anger. I felt no lingering resentment. I just felt was pity.

“How are you feeling, Trinity?” I asked, keeping my voice steady and even.

“I’m terrible, Eli! They won’t let me leave!” She pressed her forehead against the glass, her breath fogging up the surface. “They keep giving me pills and asking me about the crash, but all I can think about is us. We were supposed to go to the beach this summer, remember? You promised me on your birthday last year that we were going to figure it out. You said we were a team.”

The more she talked, the more old memories came rushing back.

Promises we’d made. Plans we’d never kept. Conversations that had once felt so important.

A lump settled in my throat.

Not because I missed any of it. Because I wished I could erase it.

Listening to her was like hearing someone tell the story of a life that didn’t even belong to me anymore.

I couldn’t believe how much of myself I’d poured into a relationship that had been falling apart from the very beginning.

Victoria was right.

I should’ve walked away the moment I realized trust was always going to be a battle between us.

That moment, I wished, with every fiber of my being, that I had met Victoria first. If I had known Victoria back then, I would have avoided this entire nightmare.

My heart belonged entirely to the girl sitting out in the waiting room, and standing in this booth only proved how completely finished Trinity and I were.

“Trinity, listen to me,” I said, stepping closer to the glass, keeping my posture calm. “Those promises belonged to a different time. We were destroying each other.”

“No! No, we weren’t!” She banged her palm weakly against the glass, tears streaming down her face. “It was just a fight, Eli! We can fix it! I know I made mistakes, I know I looked for attention from other guys, but I only wanted you! Just tell the doctors you want me back! Tell them we’re together, and they’ll let me go!”
