“If being broken by a bad relationship landed people in a psych ward, Mrs. Woods, then I should have been admitted right alongside her,” I said, my voice dropping into a quiet, dangerous tone.
“So let me make something crystal clear to you right now. Trinity isn’t in that room because of me. She’s in that room because of you and Shawn.”
Mandy’s face drained of color, her chest heaving.
“How dare you-”
“How dare I?” I mocked, taking another step forward, refusing to give her an inch.
“You want to talk about root causes? Let’s talk about them. Trinity started sleeping around when she was fifteen years old because she was starving for an ounce of male validation that your husband never bothered to give her at home. She spent her entire teenage life throwing herself at every guy who looked her way because her own parents couldn’t be bothered to show her what real love looked like!”
Mandy stood frozen, her mouth working silently, her hands trembling at her sides.
“Did it ever occur to you to stop lecturing her and simply ask how she was doing?” I continued, letting every truth I had suppressed for years cut right through her.
“Even when she and I were together, she was constantly seeking attention from other men because she was terrified of being unwanted. That didn’t start with me, Mandy. That started in your living room. So don’t you dare stand there and lay your decades of terrible parenting on my shoulders. Search your own foundation before you come for mine.”
Mandy looked as though she had been struck. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her ghost- white and speechless.
I didn’t give her a chance to recover. I reached out, grabbed Victoria’s hand firmly in mine, and pushed past Mandy, guiding Victoria down the long corridor and out through the heavy glass doors into the cool morning
air.
I led her straight to my jeep, unlocked the doors, and gently guided her into the passenger side before climbing into the driver’s seat and slamming the door shut.
I couldn’t bring myself to turn the key. I just sat there, my hands gripping the leather steering wheel so hard my knuckles turned white, my breath coming in heavy, ragged thuds as the adrenaline burned through my blood.
Victoria unbuckled her seatbelt, sliding across the center console toward me. Her hand reached out, gently cupping my cheek, turning my face toward hers.
“Eli,” she whispered softly. “Look at me.”
I turned my eyes to hers, my mind still reeling. She leaned in, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against my lips,

then another, and another, until the violent tension locked in my jaw finally began to melt away.

“Calm down,” she whispered, resting her forehead against mine. “It’s over. You did the right thing, and none of what her mother said is your fault.”
I looked into her eyes, trying to let her words sink in.
Instead, a different fear crept in.
Seeing Trinity like that had forced me to look back at everything that had happened. How two people who once loved each other could slowly tear each other apart until there was almost nothing left.
The thought of that happening to us…
It scared the hell out of me.
Without thinking, my hand reached up, wrapping around the back of her neck to pull her into a rough, deep, desperate kiss.
I needed to feel her against me. I needed to hold onto her so tightly that nothing in the world could ever pull
us apart.
