Chapter 154

Victoria’s POV

The ultrasound gel was cool when Dr. Lawson squeezed it onto my lower stomach.

I flinched, pulling a soft breath into my chest before Elijah’s hand found mine, his fingers lacing with mine in a firm, grounding hold.

“Sorry about that, Victoria,” Dr. Lawson said, not looking up as she smoothed the monitor probe across my skin.

She was an older woman with small silver reading glasses perched on the bridge of her nose and an air of calmness that instantly settled the atmosphere in the room.

“It’s always a bit of a shock.”

“Just a little cold,” I murmured, staring intently at the dark, static-filled screen beside the examination bed.

Elijah was sitting on the edge of the small wooden stool, leaning forward so far his elbows rested on his knees.

He hadn’t said a word since we walked into the clinic, but the pressure of his thumb moving slowly over the back of my hand betrayed everything he was holding in.

“Alright,” Dr. Lawson said, tilting the monitor slightly toward us. “Let’s take a look.”

The screen shifted, the gray blur separating into distinct shapes until a clear, rounded silhouette sat right in the center.

She tapped a key on her board, and suddenly the quiet examination room filled with a rapid, echoing rhythmic beat.

My breath caught in my throat.

I looked over at Elijah. His eyes were wide, fixed on the monitor, his mouth slightly parted. Whatever composure he usually kept tucked behind his quiet demeanor dissolved right there.

He let out a low breath, his chest rising, his grip on my hand tightening as the reality settled over us both.

“Heartbeat is strong,” Dr. Lawson noted, taking a couple of quick measurements across the screen. “Development is right on track for eight weeks. Everything looks healthy, Victoria.”

“Healthy?” Elijah’s voice sounded rough, as if he hadn’t used it all morning.

“Very,” she smiled, looking at him over her frames. “You two are doing great. Now, you mentioned you’re taking a long road trip this afternoon?”

“Yeah,” I answered, wiping a stray tear from my cheek before it dropped. “A sports trip up near the coast. About five or six hours in a van.”

“That’s perfectly fine. Just stay hydrated, get up to stretch your legs whenever the van pulls over, and don’t lift any heavy luggage yourself. Leave that to the tall guy sitting next to you.”

Elijah let out a laugh, his eyes still fixed on the image on the screen.

“I’ve got it covered.”

Twenty minutes later, we were standing out in the sun-drenched parking lot.

Elijah was holding the thin paper envelope containing the printed ultrasound photos, his thumb running over the corner of it again and again.

“We need to stop by the store,” I said, slinging my bag over my shoulder as we reached his car. “I still need travel snacks, water, and a few things for the cabin.”

“Okay,” he agreed softly, unlocking the door for me. But instead of letting me step inside, he kept his arm rested on the open door frame, his eyes searching my face.

“How are you feeling?”

“A little lightheaded. But good. Really good.”

He leaned down, resting his forehead against mine for a long moment.

“We’re really doing this,” he whispered.

I smiled, my eyes stinging all over again.

“We really are.”

For a moment, neither of us moved.

The parking lot around us carried on as normal. Cars came and went. Someone laughed a few rows over. A shopping cart rattled across the pavement.

But it all felt so far away.

Elijah kept his hand over my stomach, his thumb brushing absentmindedly over the fabric of my dress.

His eyes drifted down before finding mine again.

“I know we’re young,” he murmured. “And I know this isn’t how either of us imagined starting a family.”

I opened my mouth, but he gave a small shake of his head.

“Let me finish.”

His smile was small, almost nervous.

“I can’t promise I’ll have all the answers. I’m probably going to make mistakes along the way.” He let out a quiet laugh. “Actually… I know I will.”
