Do Not Fall For The Baseball Captains novel Chapter 97

Victoria’s POV

“Hell nah. You did not say that to a professor, Elijah,” I managed to get out, wiping a stray tear from the corner of my eye.

“I sure did,” he replied, entirely deadpan as he flipped a page in his behavioral criminology textbook.

He didn’t even look up, but the tiny, satisfied twitch at the corner of his mouth completely gave him away.

“The man tried to tell me that rational choice theory explains every single repeat offender in the state. I just politely reminded him that some people are simply stupid. It’s a valid criminological perspective.”

“Politely? Elijah, you? Politely?” I echoed, incredulous.

He finally looked up from his book, his dark eyes locking onto mine. “And what’s that supposed to mean?”

“You damn know exactly what that’s supposed to mean, Elijah,” I shot back, leaning over the counter.

“You ‘politely told a professor? Please. Your massive ego wouldn’t even let you finish the first sentence without making sure he knew you thought he was wrong. You probably stood there with that smug look on your face until the poor man questioned his entire career choice.”

Elijah’s eyes narrowed, a thoroughly dangerous, playful spark instantly flaring up in them.

“You did not just say that.”

“Oh yeah. I sure did.” I teased, giving him a defiant grin.

“You better run.” he warned, a low rumble in his chest as he shut his textbook with a soft thud. “Because if I catch your pretty ass, Victoria…

I didn’t even let him finish the sentence. I shrieked, spinning on my heel and bolting out of the kitchen.

But he moved too fast. Before I could even clear the edge of the living room rug, his hands caught my waist from behind.

He lifted me effortlessly right off my feet, spinning me around while I kicked my legs in the air.

“Put me down!” I screamed, laughing so hard my chest heaved as he carried me back toward the kitchen like a trophy. “Elijah, stop! Put me down!”

He finally set me back down against the counter, but his hands stayed locked on my waist.

I leaned back against the stone, gasping for air and laughing so hard my chest hurt.

Honestly, I needed that. My brain had been turning to pure mush after three hours of staring at fluid mechanics and pipeline friction formulas while he broke down serial killers.

The numbers had literally been bleeding together on my screen, but running away from him like an idiot had finally cleared out the fog.

My lungs finally settled, leaving the kitchen completely quiet. I looked up at him, still locked in his hold, and the playful energy between us dissipated.

His eyes weren’t teasing anymore. They were fixed directly on my face, and suddenly, my mind wasn’t on my exams at all.

My stomach chose that exact moment to let out a loud rumble. I was grateful for it-somewhat. It was a solid distraction.

“I am hungry.” I blurted.

He stared at me for a second, his eyes drifting over to the stove clock. It read a few minutes past eleven.

“It’s almost midnight, Toria.”

I instantly narrowed my eyes, crossing my arms over my chest and throwing out a sharp pout.

“Oh, I see. So you’re calling me overweight now? Is that what we’re doing?”
