In the expansive kitchen, the cold white light cast down on Aubrey Hayes’s slender figure as she leaned against the edge of the island, her face pale, her mood exceptionally low.

The congee bubbled softly in the pot, the night outside a hazy blur, a gentle breeze rustling the treetops, carrying the fresh scent of new leaves.

Her body was constantly cold, her heart racing and tight, her emotions on the verge of collapse, staring at the faint flame under the pot, forcing herself to calm down, she couldn’t fall apart when Damon needed someone to take care of him the most.

Suppressed emotions came crashing down, so many painful things weighed on her, making it hard to breathe.

From behind, Tracy Blackwood’s voice broke through, Aubrey, can I ask you for a favor?

Aubrey took a deep breath, forcing a stiff smile, and turned to look at her,What is it?

I’m going abroad tomorrow, and I want to go home now to pack and get my work stuff ready. Could you stay here tonight and keep an eye on my brother?

Where would I stay?

You can stay in the room next to Damon’s. There are clean sheets, toiletries, and lots of new clothes.Tracy’s face was drawn as she said, defeated, I really don’t want to bother you, but I honestly don’t know who else to ask to look after my brother.”

Aubrey hesitated for a few seconds, then asked, So, I’d have to take time off work to be with him all day?”

No, definitely not.Tracy didn’t want her lie to interfere with Aubrey’s work. She quickly explained, Just check on him once in the morning and once in the evening. He won’t do anything stupid again.

Okay.

The door code is the same one Damon always uses, like at the Crestview City house, you know?

I know.

Thanks, Aubrey.

It’s no problem.Aubrey forced a stiff smile, pretending to be calm, but inside, she felt utterly devastated, a wave of depression threatening to drown her. She felt an inexplicable urge to cry, her mind clouded as if by fog. She was so tired, so incredibly tired

Damon was pushing her away, hating her.

Everyone in this world, to varying degrees, was forcing her to do things she didn’t want to do.

She just wanted to live life on her own terms for once.

Tracy walked over, took Aubrey’s hand, and placed a car key in her palm. My brother has three cars in the garage. It’s hard to get a taxi around here, and t’s far from the subway station. You can use this car to get to and from work.

Thank you,Aubrey said, clutching the car key.

Tracy frowned slightly, noticing how Aubrey’s fingers were always cold, never warm. She looked up at Aubrey’s face and found her even more haggard han her brother, her complexion pale. Even with a smile on her face, her eyes always held such a sad, gloomy expression.

Aubrey, are you not feeling well?

Aubrey shook her head, pulled her hand back, and feigned a cheerful tone, No, I’m fine.

Then I’m leaving my brother in your care.

Okay,Aubrey nodded.

Tracy released her hand and turned to leave.

Outside, the sound of a car starting up echoed, and she faintly heard Tracy drive away.

The huge house returned to silence. Aubrey braced herself against the kitchen island, closed her eyes, and lowered her head, taking deep breaths in and but, slowly adjusting her mood and state of mind.

Pulling herself together, Aubrey turned to the congee, adding marinated beef slices and beaten egg, stirring gently. She even tossed in a small handful of her most hated scallions, and seasoned it with salt.

She turned off the stove, ladling out two bowls. One she kept for herself, and the other she placed on a tray to take to Damon’s room.

Standing outside Damon’s door, she hesitated.

The light was already on inside, spilling out from under the door.

She raised her hand and knocked. Damon’s gentle voice responded, Come in.Not cold at all.

Perhaps Damon thought it was Tracy knocking, hence the pleasant tone.

Aubrey turned the doorknob and stepped inside.

The room was bathed in a cool, white light, exceptionally bright, revealing the entire layout.

Spacious and tidy, it featured a huge gray bed with gray and white checkered bedding, flanked by two chic, low cabinets. Various aerospace models adorned the cabinet tops.

The other side of the room was set up as a study, separated by a screen. It was particularly spacious, with an oversized, curved desk covered in equipmenttwo large computers, and several boxes and devices she didn’t recognize.

Behind the desk stood a bookshelf, overflowing with various books and models, along with the trophies and medals he had won.

At that moment, Damon was seated at the desk, the glow of the computer screen partially obscuring his face.

Aubrey hesitated, a knot of nervousness tightening in her stomach. She feared he would lash out and send her away. After a long moment of indecision, she mustered her courage, forced a smile, and said softly, Damon, I made you some beef and egg drop congee.

She walked to the desk and placed the tray on the surface.

Damon glanced at the congee in the bowl, then his dark, intense gaze lifted to meet hers.

Aubrey’s eyes locked with his, her heart skipping a beat in her chest, a strange tension filling the air.

He didn’t seem as gaunt as in the photos _Tracy_ had sent her. He was just a little rough around the edges with the stubble, making him appear more rugged. This different image from his usual refined self only added to his untamed magnetism.

Feeling flustered under his gaze, she rushed to explain,Tracy_ left. She said she’s going abroad tomorrow and can’t continue to take care of you, so she asked me to stay.

Damon remained silent.

Aubrey’s cheeks flushed under his gaze, her heart suspended in midair, fearing he would send her carefully prepared congee flying across the room, or worse, verbally lash ou

out and banish her from his sight.

Just last week, she had hurled a torrent of bitter words at him in the rain, even going so far as to plan a marriage registration with Alex. Damon must despise her now.
