Aubrey walked in and glanced back at the iron gate as it slowly closed.
She followed the main road forward.

In the hazy, dim light of the night, the yard lights were already on, enveloping the lush greenery in a warm, yellow glow.
The front yard was filled with large trees and shrubbery, all thriving and well–maintained.
After walking a short distance, Tracy came to meet her, hurrying toward her.“Aubrey, you’re finally here.”
Tracy grasped Aubrey’s hand, then suddenly froze, looking down at her fingers.“Why are your hands so cold?”
“I’m fine,” Aubrey said, retracting her hand. Hearing that Damon had attempted suicide had frightened her so badly that she felt drained, her whole body weak. Of course her hands were cold.
“Where’s your brother?”
Tracy pouted, lowered her eyes, and wore a long face.“He’s locked in his room, refusing to see anyone or eat dinner.”
Will you take me to see him? Please?” Aubrey was heartbroken, on the verge of losing it, desperate to see him. Her voice choked with emotion.
Hearing this, Tracy couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt.
She felt that she had gone too far, making Aubrey worry for eight long days.
But then she thought, she had to play the villain for her brother’s happiness.
Tracy hesitated,“But Damon doesn’t want to see you.”
Is he really never going to walk again?” Aubrey’s fingers trembled slightly.
Tracy felt her hand shaking and quickly reassured her, “Aubrey, don’t worry too much. There’s still a chance he can recover. It’s not a 100% certainty of
paralysis.”
Please, take me to see him.”
Okay, I’ll take you to Damon’s room now.”
Aubrey nodded.
Tracy took her icy hand and led her through a path, around a corridor, to the door of a room.
This house is so big, and Damon lives here alone?” Aubrey looked around.
It’s always been like this. Since his accident, I’ve been the only one here with him, but I’m leaving for abroad tomorrow, so I can’t continue to take care
of him.”
What about your other family members? Can’t they come and be with him?”
Tracy frowned, shaking her head bitterly, “My grandpa is too old and needs care himself. My mom just cries every day when she sees Damon like this. he doesn’t help and just makes Damon feel worse. As for my dad and my older brother, they’re both very busy and don’t have time for Damon.”
n Aubrey’s mind, the Blackwoods‘ house had always been an incredibly warm harbor.
How could no one in his family, besides Tracy, be there for him when something so terrible had happened?
What will happen to him when you leave the country?” Aubrey asked, her voice filled with concern.
Tracy’s head drooped, her voice laced with bitterness. “What else can happen? He’s a grown man. He’ll just have to fend for himself here.”
Aubrey’s worry deepened.
Tracy pushed open Damon’s door and whispered, “Go in. Don’t turn on the light. My brother doesn’t like bright light.”
Aubrey nodded and stepped into the pitch–black room.
Tracy immediately shut the door, a smug smile playing on her lips, and turned to leave.
n reality, her whole family wanted to move in and had even hired three male nurses to take care of him in shifts, 24 hours a day.
But she had chased them all away.

Thankfully, her brother also needed peace and quiet and, because he worked from home, didn’t allow other family members to move in and disturb
him.
Tracy skipped off towards her own room.
Inside the room.
The room was steeped in dimness, the bright moonlight streaming in through the window, enveloping the forlorn and desolate figure in the wheelchair. Aubrey’s steps were heavy, her heart heavy as well, as she slowly walked over.
Reaching his side, she whispered cautiously, “Damon…”
He’d assumed the footsteps belonged to Tracy, but then he heard Aubrey Hayes’s voice.
Damon tensed, his hands clamping down on the wheelchair’s armrests, knuckles turning white.
In the dim light, he couldn’t make out her features, only a vaguely visible dark silhouette,
Aubrey crouched down in front of him, her hands reaching out to touch his legs encased in braces. She knelt on the floor, her voice trembling with emotion, choked with tears. “I’m so sorry, Damon.”
Damon remained silent.
The silence felt like it was crushing Aubrey’s heart. Her eyes welled with tears as she desperately fought back the grief. Her hands stroked his legs, her soft voice wavering, “I’m sorry…”
In the darkness, Damon’s eyes burned as he watched Aubrey kneel before him, her body almost draped across his lap. He heard the weariness in her voice, laced with a mournful sob.
His heart ached.
Each “I’m sorry” was like a physical blow to his chest. In his entire life, he hated nothing more than hearing Aubrey apologize to him.
He opened his mouth to speak, but the words caught in his throat.
He wanted to reach out, to stroke her hair, to tell her, My injury isn’t your fault. Don’t blame yourself. I’m really okay. Please don’t worry, and please, don’t cry.
But the words caught in his throat, refusing to be spoken.
He didn’t need her pity.
Those cutting words, each one a blade to the heart, still echoed in his mind, and her whirlwind marriage to Alex was the most devastating blow of all.
“Just go…” he finally said, his voice flat.
Aubrey shook her head. “I’m not going anywhere.”
“Go.”
“No,” Aubrey mumbled, burying her face against his knee. Her shoulders shook as she sobbed, the words muffled.“Your sister’s leaving for a business trip tomorrow. What’ll you do if I leave too?”
“I don’t need you to take care of me.”
“Then let someone else take care of you…” Aubrey lifted her head to look at him.
Her eyes having adjusted to the dimness, Aubrey could make out his features in the moonlight, the rough stubble covering his face, making him look all the more worn in the hazy light.
Slowly, she raised her hand, reaching out to touch his cheek.
