The moment the door swung open, the air in the living room seemed to solidify.
Four figures entered in succession.

Leading the way was Damon’s father, Chase Blackwood, clad in a bespoke black suit, every line of it radiating undeniable authority. His gaze, sharp as a hawk’s, landed on Aubrey.
Close behind was Damon’s mother, Victoria Stone, in a white flowing dress, a pearl necklace casting a warm, yet distant, glow. The corners of her lips were upturned in a perfect, unassailable smile of polite detachment.
Following closely behind them were his uncle, Charles Blackwood, and his aunt, Hannah Pierce.
The four of them exuded an imposing presence, a heavy, oppressive weight that bore down on Aubrey, tightening her chest and making each breath a conscious effort.
Aubrey offered a polite nod, simply saying, “Hello.”
They returned the gesture with curt nods of their own.
Damon’s expression hardened as he took in the four figures, his eyes flicking to Aubrey, gauging her reaction.
She was clearly uncomfortable, bordering on panic.
“Dad, Mom, Uncle, Aunt, what brings you here?” Damon’s voice held a subtle undercurrent of tension.
Victoria Stone gave a placid smile. “Perhaps we’ve arrived at an inopportune moment, interrupting your dinner.”
Damon said, “It’s fine. Why don’t you all have tea in the tearoom? I’ll join you after I’ve finished.”
The elders murmured their assent and headed toward the tearoom.
“Aubrey, come and eat.”
Damon’s call snapped Aubrey out of her apprehensive daze.
With the older relatives now in the tearoom, only she and Damon remained in the dining hall.
Aubrey hurried back to her seat, but as she looked at the food, she found herself completely devoid of appetite, her heart pounding too hard to eat.
Aubrey risked a glance at Damon, who seemed utterly calm and collected, completely unfazed. They were his elders, after all. It was only natural he wouldn’t be scared.
“Eat.”
Suddenly, Damon picked up a piece of meat and placed it in her bowl. Just a simple word, as if he could see right through her unease.
She took a deep breath and picked up her fork.
She managed to eat a little, but it was far from enjoyable.
After they finished, the housekeeper came out to clear the table, cleaned up the kitchen, and then left for the day.
Damon wheeled himself toward the tea room, with Aubrey following behind.
As they reached the door, Damon abruptly stopped. “You don’t have to come in. Go back to your room and rest.”
Just then, his uncle’s stern voice echoed from inside the tea room, “Let Aubrey come in as well.”
Aubrey took a heavy breath, gathering her courage to move forward.
As she passed Damon, he suddenly gripped her arm, his warm palm against her skin, creating a sense of security.
His voice was firm and powerful. “Go back to your room.”
Just those few words spared her from facing those elders who were so intimidating to her.
Ever since Damon’s accident, she’d made up her mind: from now on, she’d only listen to him. No one else’s opinion mattered.
Aubrey nodded and turned to head back to her room, glancing back as Damon entered the tea room.
This way, all the pressure shifted to Damon, which eased her burden considerably.

But what if Damon buckled under the pressure from his elders? Would he personally drive her away?

She suddenly recalled that rainy night, Damon standing in the downpour, his voice deep and grave as he told her, “Tell me what’s going on, let me handle it. You don’t have to do anything, just be good, be quiet, and stay by my side.”
Did Damon’s promise still hold?
Trust and doubt battled within her, leaving her no peace.
Inside the tea room, the lights were bright, illuminating the antique decor and artfully arranged objects.
Incense curled through the air, mingling with the rich aroma of tea.
The four elders were already sipping their tea. Seeing Damon enter alone, his uncle spoke first, “Where’s Aubrey?”
Damon wheeled himself forward, stopping in front of the four elders.
“Uncle, you can just tell me what’s on your mind.”
Charles cleared his throat, set down his teacup, and said earnestly, “Damon, you’re not getting any younger. You should start considering your marriage.”
Damon chuckled, using a polite tone to say something impolite. “Uncle, is my cousin married? Are your two adopted sons married? Is my older brother married? I’m the youngest of the men in the family. Why is everyone pressuring me to get married?”
Charles’s face darkened, and he was momentarily at a loss for words.
Chase quickly jumped in, “Your brothers, at least, wouldn’t choose a woman who’s unsuitable for marriage. Are you really going to give up your career for a woman?”
Damon looked at him, his tone serious. “Dad, we’re all independent individuals. Let’s each live our own lives. Even though we’re father and son, you shouldn’t interfere too much in my life.”
Chase said with restrained anger, “I’m doing it for your own good.”
Damon smiled faintly. “A simple ‘for my own good‘? Can you bear the consequences for me, then?”
Chase fell silent, picking up his teacup and taking a sip.
Seeing that their persuasion wasn’t working, Hannah asked more directly, “What’s so great about Aubrey Hayes anyway? She’s ruined you like this, and you still want to be with her?”
Damon’s expression darkened, his gaze shifting to his aunt. “My current state is my own doing. What does Aubrey have to do with it? Did she push me nto traffic? And whether or not I choose to be with her is none of your concern.”
