Chapter109.
After Damon went into the tea room, Aubrey’s heart was in turmoil, and she couldn’t help but overthink.

She took a shower and sat by the window, gazing at the bright moonlight and listening to the chirping of the insects, feeling inexplicably down. Her depression always came to disrupt her mind and torment her body. The arrival of the elders made her feel suffocated, which only worsened her
condition.
Her emotions remained unstable, and worries piled up one after another.
Not wanting to be plagued by depressive thoughts, Aubrey grabbed her phone, trying to distract herself.
She dialed Sierra’s number.
As her best friend, she felt it was necessary to tell her about Ryan.
Sierra answered the phone, her voice very soft.
“Bree, what’s up?”
From her voice, Aubrey guessed that she had just lulled her child to sleep and was probably still taking care of the baby.
Aubrey didn’t dare to speak too loudly either, whispering,” Sierra_, do you know Lily Moore?”
“Which Lily Moore? My husband’s ex–girlfriend?”
“Yeah.”
“Damon said she married someone in New Haven City, her daughter has autism, and she’s divorced. I saw your husband taking her daughter to the hospital for a check–up today.”
Silence fell on the other end of the phone.
Aubrey wasn’t sure if she had done the right thing, but she didn’t want to hide it from _Sierra_,“_Sierra_, I thought about it for a long time, worried that telling you might cause misunderstandings between you and your husband. But if I didn’t say anything, I’d feel like I was betraying you. So, I’m just giving you the facts, and you’ll have to decide what to do with them.”
“Thank you, Bree,” Sierra choked out.
That choked voice made Aubrey feel terrible.“So, what are you going to do now?”
Sierra sniffled, then burst out with indignation, “What else can I do? I’m booking a ticket to New Haven City tomorrow. I don’t need to judge anything. I’ll just leave our son with him, find a job, and get a life.”
“But your baby is only six months old, and he has work too. Will he hire a nanny?”
Sierra scoffed.“That’s his problem to figure out, not mine…”
Yes, that was the Sierra she knew.
“Bree, my son isn’t a deep sleeper. I’m afraid of waking him, so I’ll talk to you later.”
“Okay, you go ahe-”
Before Aubrey could finish, the call ended.
Aubrey’s heart sank again, as if she were trapped inside a transparent coffin. Even though she could see the world clearly, she felt trapped, a suffocating pressure building inside her.
She wanted to get some fresh air but was afraid of running into Damon’s elders.
The night was deep.
She faintly heard the sound of two cars leaving. Guessing that the Blackwoods were likely gone, she hurried out of her room to find Damon in the main hall.
As she walked down the corridor, she saw Damon approaching in his wheelchair.
They stopped in the hallway.
The warm yellow light created a hazy, dreamlike atmosphere, dim but enough to see each other’s expressions.

Their eyes locked.
Aubrey anxiously pleated the fabric of her dress, bracing herself for dismissal
He wouldn’t disregard what his elders had said, would he?

Damon was silent for a long moment, and Aubrey couldn’t help but speak first.“Are your parents and your aunt and uncle gone?
Damon replied in a steady tone.“Yes, they’ve left.”
Did they say anything?”
They said a lot. What are you referring to specifically?”
Aubrey’s heart felt like it was filled with lead, heavy and sinking. “Anything about me leaving?”
Damon frowned.“This is my house. Whether you stay or go is my decision. No one else has the right to dictate that.”
Didn’t your family put any pressure on you?”
Damon scoffed. “If I can’t handle that kind of pressure, what kind of man would I be?”
Aubrey was silent.
His words stung, as if he was scolding her. Over the years, she had never been as resolute as Damon. When faced with external pressure, her instinct was always to retreat.
Aubrey moved in front of him, crouching down. She took his warm hand in hers, looking down as she murmured, “Damon, would you ever ask me to cave?”
Damon’s intense gaze lingered on her as he squeezed her cold fingertips, his voice a soft, husky murmur.“Aubrey Hayes, stay if you want, leave if you want. I won’t force you.”
Aubrey’s eyes inexplicably welled up with tears.
It wasn’t a conscious decision to cry; her body seemed to be acting on its own. Emotions surged like a heavy net, overwhelming her.
Damon was saying she could stay.
But it felt like he didn’t love her as much as he used to.
No one can keep enduring pain without eventually breaking, and Damon must be exhausted.
She was so, so tired too.
Aubrey turned her face and pressed it against his thigh, her cheek resting against his warm hand, and slowly closed her tear–filled eyes.
She desperately wanted Damon to hold her.
She truly knew she had been wrong.
She regretted pushing him away time and again, hurting him deeply, all while thinking it was for his own good, for his future. Little did she know, life loesn’t always guarantee a future.
Maybe she’d die tomorrow?
Why not cherish every day as it comes?
Tears slowly trickled from her eyes, pooling and soaking into the back of Damon’s hand.
Damon’s hand stiffened slightly, his fingertips trembling as he felt the cold dampness. His gaze dropped to Aubrey’s dark head, where she lay face lown on his thigh, obscuring her face.
Her slight, slender frame radiated a fragile, pitiful air.
He had a growing sense that Aubrey’s smiles were often a protective facade.
A dull ache throbbed in his chest, as if something had struck him. He gently withdrew his hand from beneath her cheek, lifting it to examine the tear
tracks on the back.
Aubrey was secretly crying.
His hand softly stroked her dark, silky hair, a pang of heartache hitting him. He longed to hold her.

But with his leg injured and his ribs aching, embracing her was just too difficult right now.
He murmured,“Come to my room tonigla. Sleep with me”

Aubrey knew about his multiple fractures and how difficult it was for him to move. An accidental bump could cause further injury. Besides, she had taken care of him just two nights ago; it probably wasn’t purely for physical reasons.
Maybe he just wanted her near.
But her mood was so fragile and low today. Going to his room would make it too easy for him to sense that something was wrong with her. “Maybe next time. I just want to sleep alone tonight,” Aubrey said, sniffing and forcing a strained, stiff smile. Suppressing the heavy weight of her depression, she feigned composure as she stood up. “I’m going to grab a glass of milk in the kitchen. You should head back to your room. Good night.” With that, she walked past Damon toward the living room, her breathing becoming increasingly labored. Her hands trembled, and she desperately needed some ice water to calm herself.
Damon pursed his lips, a bitter twist forming at the corners. A heavy feeling settled in his chest as he gripped the armrests of his wheelchair, his knuckles white with tension, the veins in his hands standing out.
What game was she playing now? Hot and cold?
Just two days ago, she was bathing him, doing the most intimate things, clinging to him and crying about wanting to stay by his side forever. She’d kiss him awake in the mornings, kiss him before work, and bring him his favorite pomegranates after work.
And now, sleeping in the same room with him for one night was too much to ask?
When it came to Aubrey, he could never expect too much.
Damon let out a heavy breath and started his wheelchair, heading back to his room.
