Aubrey felt a little guilty, looking down at the documents in her hands. “I don’t have any debt, but I don’t have much in the way of assets either. I’ve been paying Blake’s medical bills for so many years. I haven’t saved any money. The money you gave me was spent on my mont’s medical expenses, and the rest went to paying the compensation.”
Damon hooked his arm around Aubrey’s waist, pulling her onto his uninjured thigh. His eyes were intense and tender. I’m not after your money, and I’m not afraid of your debts. You know what I want, right?”
“I know. You want me to be honest and open with you, to hold nothing back,” Aubrey said, her head lowered, her voice soft.
“Eat your breakfast first,” Damon said softly. “I’ll drive you to work after.”
Aubrey’s heart clenched, and she stared at him, uneasy.
She couldn’t help but feel like Damon was the one who was sick, not her.
Damon gently tilted her chin up, his gaze intense. “Don’t keep secrets or have any privacy. Don’t hide anything from me.”
Aubrey’s heart leaped into overdrive, and she shook her head, helpless.
In a haze, she felt Damon’s possessiveness bordering on deranged.
A pang shot through her heart, and she wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face in the crook of his shoulder, murmuring with heartache, “Damon, are you sick?”
Damon’s large hand gently stroked the back of her head, his eyes closed as he nestled in her fragrant hair, his voice low and husky, “Maybe. You’ve tormented me to the point where I’m not myself anymore. Just don’t lie to me again, and don’t say things that hurt me, or I really will lose it.”
“I won’t,” Aubrey whispered, tightening her hold, tears escaping her eyes, a sob catching in her throat. “I’m sorry…”
“Bree, I hate it when you apologize. Don’t ever say that word to me again.”
“Okay,” Aubrey choked out, her throat raw as if burned by fire, nodding through her tears.
“Don’t say it, and don’t do it, okay?”
“Okay.”
Damon gently pushed her back by the shoulders, creating some space between them, and cupped her tear–streaked face in his hands, his own eyes reddening, his brow furrowed as he murmured, “Why are you crying again?”
“I can’t help it,” Aubrey sniffled, her gaze darting away.
Her emotions were so low at the moment that even the slightest upsetting thing would trigger depression and sadness, her tears falling like a broken string of pearls, completely uncontrollable.
Her mind didn’t want to cry, but her body insisted.
Damon gently wiped away her tears with his fingertips and lowered his head to kiss her lips.
Aubrey returned to the law firm and took some time to organize her assets.”
She realized that all of her assets were gifts from Damon: a car and a house in Crestview City, a house in New Haven City, a small amount of savings,
insurance, but no investments.
The detailed information about these assets wouldn’t even fill half a page.
She listed all the friends she was currently in contact with, including her work plans for the next six months, and put it all in a spreadsheet for him.
These seemingly excessive displays of control were actually Damon’s way of dealing with his insecurity about her.
As long as it could put his mind at ease, she was willing to hold nothing back.
As evening approached.
Aubrey received a notice from the court that the trial date for the Vance Corp chemical plant pollution case had been set.
But the evidence she had in hand was still insufficient. After thinking for a long time, she decided to enlist the help of those around her.
Damon could help her, but he was injured and shouldn’t overexert himself.

She sent the message via a secure messaging app. A moment later, she received a reply.
Zachary: “What’s up?”
Aubrey Hayes: “Can you help me get inside the Vance Corp chemical plant?”
Zachary: Tiece of cake. When?”
Aubrey Hayes: “Any of the next three days, but it has to be at four in the morning.”
Zachary: “Why so late?”
Aubrey Hayes: “Because that’s when they illegally dump wastewater.”
Zachary: “Okay, day after tomorrow.”
Aubrey Hayes: “Thanks, Zachary,”
Zachary: “We’re family. No need to be so formal.”
The setting sun cast its last rays, painting the sky with red clouds.
Aubrey Hayes packed her satchel and left the office.
As soon as she stepped out of the firm’s front door, Garrett Miller suddenly appeared from nowhere, blocking her path with a greasy smile. “Aubrey, he Vance Corp case is about to go to trial, isn’t it? Think you have a shot?”
Aubrey Hayes pursed her lips and smiled faintly. “Of course.”
Garrett Miller couldn’t help but laugh derisively. “Heh, with all your evidence gone, what are you going to use to win the case? Your silver tongue? Or re you planning to bat your pretty little eyes at the judge?”
Aubrey Hayes’s fists clenched, her eyes narrowed as she glared at him, barely able to contain her anger.
She had never met a colleague so vile.
He couldn’t get what he wanted, so he resorted to slander and targeting. His heart must be filled with filth. How did someone with such a twisted mind ven become a lawyer?
Aubrey forced a smile, maintaining her composure. “I didn’t realize Mr. Miller was reduced to selling himself to the judge when he couldn’t win a case. Thanks for the tip, I’ll give it a try.”
With those words, she walked past Garrett.
Garrett’s face twisted in anger. He spun around, glaring at Aubrey’s back, and shouted sarcastically, “Beginner’s luck won’t last forever. Just wait until ‘ou get eaten alive by the big bad wolf.”
