The dinner was winding down.
Aubrey sat to the side, watching her colleagues sing karaoke and play board games. Whether it was the alcohol, the overwhelming noise of the gathering, or the thought of her best friend being deceived by Ryan Carter again, she suddenly felt down.
“Aubrey!”
Aubrey snapped out of her thoughts at the sound of her name and looked at Garrett, who had called her.
She felt even more annoyed and responded curtly, “Mr. Miller, is there something you need?”
Garrett walked over and sat down beside her. “Someone outside is looking for you.”
“Who is it?” Aubrey asked, curious.
“I don’t know. It’s a woman. Why don’t you go take a look? She’s just outside in the hallway.”
Aubrey pulled out her phone, turned on the screen, and glanced at it. Sierra hadn’t called her.
A woman? Could it be Lily Moore?
Aubrey put down her phone and didn’t move. Garrett frowned at her. “Why aren’t you going out? There really is someone looking for you out there.”
Aubrey responded coolly, “Don’t know them, not seeing them.”
Garrett’s face darkened, and he suppressed a cold snort, sitting down without saying another word.
After a while, Garrett inexplicably spoke to her again, “Hey, Little Aubrey, is your boyfriend coming to pick you up?”
Aubrey felt physically uncomfortable just hearing his voice. “Yes.”
“Looks like he’s here. He’s outside.”
Aubrey picked up her phone and sent Damon a text.
[Damon, are you here?]
Damon replied instantly: [Not yet. Didn’t you tell me to pick you up at ten? Did the dinner end an hour early?]
[Not over yet. A male colleague keeps finding excuses to say someone outside is looking for me. Seems like he wants to get me alone.]
Damon: [Don’t go anywhere. Stay with your colleagues. I’m coming to get you now.]
Aubrey: [Okay.]
Aubrey put down her phone, looked up at Garrett, and asked coldly, “Who exactly is looking for me outside? Why are you trying to get me out there repeatedly? What do you want?”
All eyes turned to Garrett, who instantly looked awkward, his gaze darting around. He put on an innocent face. “You’ve got the wrong idea. Someone really is looking for you outside. I’m just passing on a message, that’s all. What… what could I possibly do?”
‘Besides my boyfriend, no one knows that I’m here with my colleagues today. As for the couple outside…” Aubrey figured that if anyone was looking for her, it could only be Ryan and Lily. “I don’t want to see them either.”
Garrett’s face stiffened. Fine, fine, whatever… Let’s sing!”
He hadn’t expected Aubrey to be so cautious and wary when she was out. He couldn’t find an opportunity to make a move at all.
Just then, Vincent answered a call, his voice quite loud in the noisy private room. “Mr. Blackwood, rest assured, with me here, your girlfriend will be
fine…”
Hearing this, Aubrey glanced back at Vincent, feeling a warmth in her heart.
Damon must have called Vincent to ask him to look after her.
Garrett overheard as well. After Vincent hung up, he sat down next to him and asked in a low voice, “Vincent, who was that Mr. Blackwood on the phone? Whose boyfriend is he?”
Vincent popped a grape into his mouth, nonchalantly replying, “Aubrey’s boyfriend.”
Garrett anxiously lowered his voice even further. “Blackwood?”

“Yeah. Vincent nodded.

There can’t be that many people named Blackwood in New Haven City. Is he connected to the Blackwoods, that prominent family?”
He’s Chase Blackwood’s second son, Damon.”
Garrett gasped, his face falling as he wrung his hands nervously, glancing at Aubrey with trepidation.
He was shaken. He’d nearly made a huge mistake.
He hurried to the restroom, locking himself in a stall, clutching Evan Blackwood’s dark liquid in the vial.
He pulled out his phone and dialed Evan’s number.
Evan’s drawling voice came through the receiver. “Mr. Miller, did you take care of it?”
‘Mr. Blackwood, is Aubrey Hayes your cousin’s girlfriend? Are you trying to get me killed? If I laid a finger on her, there’s no way I could get away with
it…”
Evan snapped, “You’re useless. My cousin scares you that much?”
“It’s not your cousin I’m afraid of, it’s his father. He’s got ties to the highest levels of government. No one can afford to cross a man like that!”
“Let me put it this way,” Evan said, unhurried. “This is Chase’s wish. Aubrey’s father is in prison, and being with her will affect his future. Her social standing is simply not good enough for his son. He can’t step in to handle this himself, so he needs someone to ruin her, to break them up. I’m entrusting this difficult task to you.”
Garrett’s eyes widened in realization. “I see.”
“Do this well, and you’ll get more than just money and women–you’ll get fame and power too.”
“Mr. Blackwood, Aubrey is too cautious. I couldn’t get to her tonight, but I promise, there will be opportunities in the future.”
“Alright, I’ll be waiting for good news.” Evan reassured him, “Be bold. The biggest boss backing you is Chase. Besides me, he’s got your back too.”
“Thank you, Mr. Blackwood.”
Evan scoffed coldly and hung up.
After the dinner.
Aubrey left with her colleagues.
Outside the private courtyard restaurant, Damon’s car was already parked by the roadside, waiting. Seeing them come out, he immediately opened the door, got out, and strode towards Aubrey.
Seeing him, Vincent greeted him with a beaming smile and a respectful handshake. “Mr. Blackwood, it’s been a while.”
Damon shook his hand. “It has been a while, Mr. Hall.”
“Picking up your girlfriend?”
Damon nodded, “Yeah.”
They exchanged a few more pleasantries.
Behind Aubrey, her colleagues sized Damon up, whispering amongst themselves.
“Damn, he’s gorgeous. Whose boyfriend is that?”
“I don’t know, but Vincent is being super respectful. He must be someone important.”
“Tch! Important how? He’s driving a Lexus minivan. It’s just a glorified grocery getter.”
“Short hair, shorter vision. That’s a Lexus LM. It’s a two–hundred–thousand–dollar lounge on wheels. The ones who look low key are usually the ones you can’t afford to offend.”
“Exactly! No taste at all. Look at his understated outfit; it exudes class. He’s totally a New Haven City blue blood.”
Aubrey remained silent, her eyes and heart completely focused on the gentle and refined man before her. He always made her feel so safe.
At that moment, Damon walked over alongside Vincent, and the other colleagues fell silent.
