Chapter150.
Aubrey’s heart tightened, as if gripped by a large hand, her body stiffening. She stared at him in disbelief, thinking she must have misheard.
Damon’s father was apologizing to her?
She had never imagined that a high–ranking elder would apologize to her for something that seemed so insignificant to others.
Even when her mother had beaten her severely as a child, she would only dismiss it with a sentence like, “I did it all for your own good, yet you’re still so ungrateful.”
It was the same with her own father. Whether he was wrong to accuse her, whether he favored her brother, whether he’d made a mistake, he would either gloss over it in silence or smooth things over, never once considering her feelings.
This apology felt like a ton of weight, pressing down hard on the scales in her heart, righting the balance she’d long lost.
Her throat suddenly constricted, burning with emotion. Her eyes welled up, and she forced a smile, shaking her head. “I didn’t take it to heart. You don’t need to apologize, Mr. Blackwood.”
Chase said with great sincerity, “An apology is necessary. Just tell me, do
you forgive me or not?”
Victoria watched Aubrey with a kind smile, while Chase waited expectantly for her answer.
Damon grabbed a handful of shrimp and, imitating his dad, peeled them and placed them in Aubrey’s small bowl, a slight smile on his face as he listened attentively.
Aubrey could barely hold back her tears, her smile strained. She bit her lip and nodded vigorously. “Yes, yes.”
Chase instructed, “Then you and Damon take care of each other.”
“Yes,” Aubrey managed to choke out, unable to say more. She bit down hard on her lip, fighting back tears, and nodded emphatically.
“Let’s eat,” Chase said, reaching out again with his fork to place a piece of fish belly in her bowl. “The belly is the most tender part. Eat more.”
“Okay,” Aubrey mumbled, her head hung low, so low. Tears welled in her eyes, threatening to spill. Her hand trembled slightly as she picked up a piece of fish, but her throat was still tight, making it hard to swallow.
A tenderness bloomed in the softest
Corner of her heart, a feeling that wasn’t pain, but profound emotion.
This wonderful family was something she needed to hold onto, desperately.
“Eat some shrimp.” Damon placed the small bowl filled with shrimp meat in front of her.
Aubrey was beyond words. She picked up the shrimp and stuffed it in her mouth, tears falling like beads onto the table.
Chase and Victoria pretended not to notice, not wanting to make her feel awkward or uncomfortable.
Her emotions were clearly running high.
Damon picked up a napkin from the table and subtly slipped it into her hand.
At this simple gesture, Chase and Victoria immediately ducked their heads and focused on their food.
Giving her space to wipe her tears.
Aubrey wiped her tears away, and the smile on her face became a little more genuine.
Damon, sensing the shift, tried to lighten the mood. “August is almost here. Time to head back to Grandpa’s and see all those annoying relatives.”
Chase: “I heard your cousin is getting married. He’s bringing his fiancée home to meet your grandfather this time.”
Damon: “Evan’s getting married?”
Chase: “The woman’s father is an influential government figure. Not bad.”
Damon scoffed. “No wonder it’s happening so fast. A shotgun wedding, huh?”
Chase: “Probably.”
Victoria said coolly, “Just wait and see. Your aunt is probably going to be beaming and acting like she’s too good for everyone.”
Damon scoffed, “Well, isn’t he still working under Dad?”

Victoria said, “Of course, she can’t compare to your dad. But your aunt will definitely use her future daughter–in–law to compare to mine.”
Aubrey paused slightly, looking at Victoria.
Damon put down his fork, took Aubrey’s hand, his eyes softened with warmth, and said with pride, “Those who rely on their dads, what can they compare with our Bree?”
Victoria smiled knowingly. “Exactly! My daughter–in–law is one of the top lawyers in the entire country. Her talent speaks for itself.” “Aubrey is indeed exceptional.” Chase joined the chorus of praise. “That Vance Corp case was handled brilliantly. So young and already so accomplished!”
Aubrey felt a little overwhelmed by the praise, her cheeks flushed, and she said shyly, “Not really.”
Growing up in an overly critical family, Aubrey felt disoriented facing such a doting, praise–filled family environment. Being recognized and admired made her feel lightheaded, and she couldn’t help but smile.
After lunch,
Chase and Victoria went home.
Throughout, they hadn’t mentioned her illness in front of Aubrey, giving her enough privacy and not putting any psychological pressure on her.
Damon didn’t go to work either, he was busy in the study.
Aubrey peeled an apple, diced it into small pieces, and brought it to Damon’s desk. She put down the fruit plate and saw him looking intently at his phone.
She walked over and naturally sat on his lap, leaning against his chest, craning her neck to peek at his phone screen.
Damon wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her fragrant hair, his eyes still glued to his phone screen.
“What are you looking at?” Aubrey asked, curiously staring at his phone.
“Job applications.”
“Huh? What job applications?”
“I’m looking for an assistant for you, someone who can help you with your work and protect you at all times.”
“You already found applicants by noon when you just mentioned it this morning?” Aubrey asked.
She turned to wrap her arms around his neck, blocking his view. “You work way too efficiently.”
Damon put down his phone, gazing intently at her, his hands firm on her slender waist. “When it comes to your safety, I can’t afford to waste a single
moment.”
“How much are you planning to pay?”
“Around two thousand dollars a month.”
“Why not have Sierra do it?”
Damon smiled wryly. “Are you kidding? When you’re with Sierra, you end up taking care of her instead. Plus, you’d have to deal with all the drama in her marriage. She’s not the right fit. I need someone who can handle themselves, preferably a girl with some martial arts or kickboxing experience.”
