Chapter149
“Are you really this stubborn?”
“Dad, when I was little, I often heard Mom talk about your past. Don’t you think you’re being a bit of a hypocrite?”
Chase fell silent, a helpless smile playing on his lips.
Damon mirrored the smile faintly. “Aubrey’s family background may not be as privileged as Mom’s was. Mom was exceptional, becoming a judge at a young age. But Aubrey is no less impressive. She’s intelligent, accomplished, and possesses a resilience that surpasses others. She’s gentle, considerate, and insightful. Her upbringing hasn’t been easy, making her prone to anxiety and self–doubt. There may be some flaws in her personality, a disconnect between her character and her environment, which causes her to live a repressed life.”
He continued, “When you were pursuing Mom, Grandpa and Grandma didn’t approve, didn’t you pursue her with that same relentless spirit, overcoming all obstacles with perseverance? Isn’t my devotion and infatuation just a result of your genes? And now you’re questioning my obsession with her?”
Chase sighed deeply, “So, it’s all my fault?”
“Dad, no one is at fault. I just hope you can put yourself in my shoes. If Mom had Aubrey’s family background back then, and she was also sick, would you still have married her?”
Chase fell silent again, turning his head to look out the window with a helpless expression.
Damon pressed earnestly, “Dad, please answer me, would you still have married Mom?”
“Yes,” Chase said softly.
Damon smirked, knowing he had won.
He felt an incredible surge of excitement getting his father’s approval, and also a wave of relief. This also proves that his father did not order Evan to de those dirty things. His father knew nothing about the bad things Evan and Garrett had done.
“Okay, if you would still marry her, despite her family background and illness, what would you do next if you were in my shoes?”
Chase took his time, considering his words carefully before responding with utter sincerity, “If I were in your shoes, I’d have as many kids as possible with her. Enough that she couldn’t even think about leaving her family and the children. Women have soft hearts, and kids are their everything. It’s not love or a man that truly binds them, but their children.”
Damon was stunned, hearing his father’s outdated and somewhat manipulative logic so plainly for the first time. He felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. “Have as many kids as possible? To trap her? Is that what you think love is, Dad?”
Chase chuckled sheepishly. “To carry on the family name? Your older brother was more than enough for that. Why else would I have had you and your
sister?”
“Oh my god… Does Mom know you think like this?”
“Hey, you can’t tell your mother any of this,” Chase said, panicking. He lowered his voice, warning sternly, “Your mother and I have been at odds lately because of you and Aubrey, and she’s barely speaking to me. If you go digging up all this stuff to tell her, you’re just trying to make my life miserable.”
“Then you need to make my life easier, stop holding a grudge against Aubrey, and stop caring about her family background.”
Chase feigned innocence. “I have no prejudice against her. I just hope you can get married and have kids without it affecting your career. I heard your company is planning to promote you to chief engineer at the end of the year. You’re only 30, and you’ll become chief engineer so young. You have a bright future ahead of you. You can’t let her affect that.”
“We’re just dating for life. She won’t affect me.”
“During the promotion, there will be a rigorous family review. At that time, the security clearance background check will check your girlfriend’s background thoroughly. I’m worried that the dating relationship and marital relationship will be regarded as the same.
“It won’t have any impact.” Damon interrupted, his tone firm. “If it affects the promotion, then I won’t get promoted. It’s fine as it is now. I don’t necessarily have to be the chief engineer.”
Chase went silent, thought for a moment, and said, “Damon, if the dating relationship doesn’t affect your promotion, why not have a child with Aubrey?”
Damon paused, looking at his dad with a heavy gaze, his heart sinking.
Didn’t he want to?

He didn’t know how much he wished to have a child that belonged to him and Aubrey Hayes. He dreamed about it.
He loved kids, and Aubrey loved them too.
Chase continued, a hint of guilt in his voice, “There’s something else I need to be honest about. Aubrey wanting to marry Alex back then? That was my doing. I pushed her to do it, told her to either leave New Haven City or get married, hoping you’d give up on her.”
Damon’s face darkened, his eyes losing their light. He clenched his jaw, fighting to maintain control, his fists tightening.
No wonder her illness had gotten so severe. Everyone had been pressuring her, forcing her to do what she didn’t want.
And Aubrey, with her people–pleasing nature, how could she have refused?
Chase went on, “I didn’t know her condition was that serious. She probably thought leaving New Haven City would help her survive, so she chose to marry your friend, at least she could see you often and have the will to live. I messed up big time. I owe you an apology, son! I’m partly to blame for your accident.”
Hearing those words, Damon covered his face, bending over as he exhaled, a heavy weight pressing down on his heart.
Chase leaned in, patting his shoulder. “I was a fool, son. Forgive me this once.“.
Damon lowered his hands, leaning back against the chair, gazing at him helplessly. “Dad, please don’t ever do that again, okay?”
“I won’t.” Chase was still shaken, realizing how close he’d come to losing his son. He wouldn’t dare meddle like that again.
“Dad, I need to ask you something.”
“What is it?”
Damon’s gaze was intense, his voice sincere. “Can you apologize to Aubrey?”
Chase paused, a flicker of surprise in his eyes.
The apology might seem insignificant, but it would mean the world to Aubrey. It would be a validation, a way to heal the wounds from when she was forced into doing things against her will.
