Ryan steadied himself, then clicked his tongue against his cheek, clearly annoyed. “I just want to ask her a question. Why are you so uptight? fx she made of glass?”
Damon warned, his voice seething, “Whatever she is, you’re not touching her.”
Ryan scoffed and took another step back. “Is this far enough for you?”
Aubrey stepped to Damon’s side and looked at Ryan, her voice even “Sierra hasn’t come to me. I can’t get through to her phone either. She’s probably back in Crestview City dealing with your divorce.”
“So now that she’s decided to divorce me, Aubrey, are you happy?” Ryan’s eyes were bloodshot with rage, his fists clenched, veins popping in his neck.
Aubrey sighed, her voice weary. “No, I’m not happy. I wanted my childhood best friend to have a happy marriage, but you didn’t give her that happiness. You don’t deserve her.”
“You’re an outsider, what makes you so sure she’s not happy?” Ryan demanded angrily.
“Because you had an emotional affair and left her alone in Crestview City to take care of both her child and your parents. That’s how I know she wasn’t happy. Before she got married, she only thought about where to see beautiful scenery, where to eat delicious food, where to go shopping. When she went home, she had a warm bed, a clean room, delicious meals. She earned her own money and spent it as she pleased, and she had parents who spoiled her like a little princess. She lived a carefree life without any worries…”
Aubrey’s voice cracked with sorrow as she continued, “She thought marriage would bring a different kind of warmth and happiness. But what does she have now? She’s trapped by a baby she can’t leave for even a few hours, spending every night exhausted and every day doing chores, taking care of the baby, and dealing with a constantly complaining old woman. You’re not there to help her, and you’re here in New Haven City, still hung up on your ex You haven’t cheated physically, but you’ve already cheated emotionally. What’s the point of you? What’s the point of this marriage? Did she give up a good life just to marry you and experience all the hardships of the world?”
Ryan’s face darkened. He knew Sierra’s life wasn’t as comfortable as it used to be. But then he argued, “Isn’t that how it is for every woman? Marriage and childbirth are a part of life. Taking care of a baby is always tiring. If she wanted to live a carefree single life, she shouldn’t have gotten married in the first place. Do you expect me not to work and just stay home with her all day?”
“That’s a ridiculous excuse.” Aubrey’s head throbbed with anger. She clenched her fist, her nails digging into her palm.
She had warned Sierra before, begged her not to rush into marriage. At least spend some real time together, make sure you see who they really are, what they truly believe. But Sierra didn’t listen. She’d read too many of those whirlwind romance novels and thought marrying first, then falling in love, would be all rainbows and unicorns. Instead, she dove headfirst into a gamble. And how many people actually win that bet?
Aubrey’s head pounded, her chest ached, even her back throbbed. She glared at Ryan and snapped, “My husband isn’t like you!”
Damon’s head snapped up. A slow smile tugged at his lips, and his dark eyes burned into hers.
Aubrey pressed on, “When I was single, I practically lived on takeout. I came home to a cold, empty apartment every night. Since I’ve been with Damon, I haven’t had a single meal from a plastic container. He does all the housework. Men are stronger, they have more stamina, so chores are easier and faster for them. He doesn’t think women are born to scrub toilets. And when his job gets crazy, he hires help. He comes straight home to me after work, and any woman who even thinks about getting flirty in his direction gets blocked and ghosted. He always puts me first, even with his family. Can you honestly say you’ve done that for Sierra?”
Ryan fell silent, his gaze dropped. His jaw tightened, a tic jumping in his cheek.
“If you could do all that, I guarantee Sierra__ would follow you wholeheartedly, never uttering a single complaint, no matter how tough things get.” Aubrey scoffed, her anger barely contained. “But you? Not only do you offer her no help in her daily life, but you’re also still involved with your ex. Do you think physical infidelity is the only kind of cheating? For a woman, emotional infidelity cuts even deeper.”
“Aubrey…” Ryan took a weak step forward, sighing wearily. “I know I messed up. _Sierra has always listened to you. Please, just talk to her for me, and I promise it won’t happen again.”
“I…” Ryan groaned, covering his face with his hands, a heavy exhale of frustration escaping his chest.
“If she listened to me, she wouldn’t have rushed into marrying you in the first place. Besides, she already gave you one chance. Just let _Sierra go. Go back to your ex, help her raise her kid, be her stepping stone. Your ex needs a man to support her autistic child, a man to prop up her career, a man who’s always available, willing to do anything for her, solve her problems, and cater to her every whim. And you, Ryan Carter, are perfectly suited to be her lapdog.”
Each word dripped with sarcasm, yet Aubrey delivered them with a calm detachment before turning and getting into her car.

The car was parked in the Blackwood Crescent garage
Demon took Aubrey’s hard as they walked out, strolling along the garden path. Damon chuckled, “Bree, what did you call me just me?
Huh Aubrey asked, surprised. “What do you mean?”
“When you were talking to Ryan, what did you call me? Damon turned to look at her, his eyes warm, a faint smile playing on his lips, his gaze full of anticipation
Aubrey had a good idea of what he meant. She bit her lip shyly, smiling faintly, but said nothing
Do you refer to me as your husband when you talk about me to other people?”
Aubrey blushed, lowering her head and nodding slightly, “Yeah.”
Damon stopped in his tracks, took hold of her upper arms, and pulled her in front of him, all seriousness. “Then say “husband“. Let me hear it.”
It wasn’t a big deal, really. It just felt too embarrassing; she couldn’t bring herself to say it. She mustered her courage, parted her lips slightly, but still couldn’t utter such an intimate term. Maybe it was because they weren’t legally married, or maybe it was because, growing up, she rarely heard any woman call her partner “husband.” Growing up in a traditional household, expressions of affection, especially verbal ones, were rare, which made it hard for her to voice such intimate feelings.
Utterly mortified, Aubrey immediately changed the subject. “Damon, how did you become friends with someone like Ryan?”
