Chapter160.
Damon gently stroked her head, his hand following the length of her hair, down to the nape of her neck. He murmured softly, “The Crestview City Aviation Institute project was simple. Any engineer could have handled it. But when I found out it was your hometown, I requested the transfer.”
Aubrey’s eyes welled up, turning red and glistening as she gazed at him in silence.
“I don’t need a lot of friends, and I rarely become close with colleagues, let alone consider them brothers. But one time in the cafeteria, I overheard Ryan talking about his disastrous blind date. He mentioned Sierra being outgoing and cute, and how her friend was stunningly beautiful. My colleagues were intrigued by you, and Ryan went on to describe your looks, your job, your name. In that moment, I was inexplicably drawn to getting close to Ryan, to becoming his friend.”
“I hated those awkward get–togethers that Ryan organized, but I went every time he invited me. I just had this foolish hope that I might run into you.”
“The day I met you, I already knew you’d be there. I was so excited.”
Aubrey’s eyes were brimming with tears.“You seemed so calm. You even pretended not to know me.”
Damon offered a wry smile. “Me, calm? I was glued to my phone, trying to mask how I really felt. What else was I supposed to say?‘Hey, long time no see, ex–girlfriend“? That would’ve put you in an awkward spot, with everyone wanting to know how we met, how long we dated, and why we broke up. Skylar was right there too, and you know how poisonous her tongue can be.”
Remembering their initial encounter, Aubrey felt a pang of resentment and mumbled, “Your words can be pretty venomous too. You called me a slut,
remember?”
Damon paused, taken aback.“When did I ever call you that?”
“Once, when you were taking me home, you saw my apartment building and you called me a ‘slut, Aubrey Hayes‘. It hurt so much at the time.”
Damon remembered the incident, a wave of guilt washing over him. He pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. “I’m so sorry, Aubrey. I was just so angry back then. Seeing you living in such a terrible place, I was heartbroken. I didn’t mean to say those things.”
“I don’t blame you, Damon.”
“When are you going to call me ‘husband“?”
“No.”
“I want to hear it.”
“I’m embarrassed.”
“No one’s here. Whisper it.”
Summoning her courage, Aubrey looped her arms around his neck, rose onto her tiptoes, and brushed her lips against his earlobe. In a voice barely a whisper, she murmured, “Husband…”
Damon’s arms tightened around her waist, a smile playing on his lips. His ears flushed crimson, the endearment a rush of sugary sweetness that tingled in his heart.
“Husband,” Aubrey repeated, her voice sweeter and lighter, drawing out the last syllable into a playful “Hu–u–usband.”
She whispered the word three times in a row.
Damon squeezed her waist, lifting her slightly as if trying to meld her into his very being.
Aubrey wrapped her legs around his waist, clinging to his neck, burying her face in the crook of his shoulder. With her eyes closed, she inhaled his clean, comforting scent, feeling utterly at peace in his warm embrace.
Damon’s tone turned serious. “When you have some time off, take me to Crestview City to visit your father in prison. I want to meet him.”
Aubrey stiffened, her body frozen in his arms.
Six years ago, after she had said yes to Damon’s proposal, his first request had been to take him back to Crestview City to meet her parents. Back then, she’d been too insecure, afraid Damon would look down on her parents because of their limited education, low social status, and working–class jobs. That’s why she’d always hesitated to introduce him to them in Crestview City.
But now, she felt differently.
“Once our baby passes the three–month mark, I’ll take you back to the Crestview City prison to visit my dad.”

“Okay “Demon slowly set her down, took her hand, and they continued walking.“I can’t give you a marriage certificate, but I can give you a wedding contract, a substantial financial commitment, my assets, and a lifetime of security.”
“Then what should I give you?” Aubrey asked with a smile, walking alongside him. “A contribution to our shared future?
“You’ll give me children and your companionship for life. That’s more than enough”
“Okay, if having kids doesn’t affect your career advancement, I’ll give you a whole bunch, enough for a soccer team.”
Damon smiled brightly.“Childbirth comes with risks. One is enough. I wouldn’t want you to risk your life having so many”
Aubrey smiled without saying anything, looped her arm through his, and rested her cheek on his bicep as they entered the living room together.
Mrs. Quinn was sitting in the living room, talking on the phone. When she saw them return, she hung up in a flurry and stood up to greet them. “Mr. Blackwood, Mrs. Blackwood, you’re back?
Damon’s eyes darkened “Mrs. Quinn, is our return that frightening? Why do you look so pale?”
“No… not at all.”
“Relax. You’re free to make calls here. No need to be so flustered.”
“Yes, sir.”
With that, Mrs. Quinn turned and headed towards the kitchen.
Damon’s gaze followed Mrs. Quinn’s retreating figure, a hint of doubt surfacing in his eyes, his expression pensive.
Aubrey watched him curiously, then turned her gaze towards Mrs. Quinn disappearing into the kitchen. “What’s wrong?”
“Something feels off about Mrs. Quinn,” Damon said, leading her to the sofa and pulling her into his arms.
“What feels off?”
“I can’t quite put my finger on it. Just a feeling.”
Elsewhere, in another villa…
Evan came down the stairs from the second floor with Veronica by his side.
Hannah walked in just as they were descending, her face instantly clouding over at the sight of them side by side.“Veronica, what are you doing here?”
Veronica looked flustered, nervously smoothing her hair.“Aunt Hannah, I… I came to see Evan about something.”
“What business?” Hannah wasn’t born yesterday, What hasn’t she seen in her years? This is her son and daughter–in–law’s marital home. Whatever it is, it could be discussed in the living room. Why go upstairs?
The second floor is nothing but bedrooms.
