After lunch, Aubrey returned to the firm.

Olivia followed Aubrey, looking rather reserved. Aubrey, this is my first real job, and my first time being a personal assistant. Please let me know ifldo anything wrong.

Okay.Aubrey sat down at her desk.

Olivia stood stiffly, looking nervous. So, what should I do now?

Aubrey paused for a few seconds, thinking. Don’t tell Mr. Blackwood about the scooter incident. I don’t want him to worry.

Okay.

“I don’t have anything for you right now. You can look at your phone in the office, or work on your own things. I’ll let you know if I need anything.

Olivia’s eyes lit up, her smile gradually widening. Can I study here?

Of course. Aren’t you still in school?

I want to work for a year to save some money before pursuing a combined Master’s and Ph.D. program.

Aubrey remembered Old Man Blackwood mentioning that Olivia’s

s parents were divorced, and she had been raised by her grandfather, who had cancer

and wanted to entrust her to Zachary.

A 22yearold girl, relying on herself instead of her parents, earning money for a graduate degreehow outstanding and resilient.

Zachary was excellent and came from a wealthy family, but a tenyear age difference was indeed a bit much.

How’s your grandpa doing?Aubrey asked.

About the same. He’s getting old, and my dad and uncle say it’s a waste of money to treat him. They won’t pay for his medical bills. I don’t have any money, and I don’t have a say. Old Man Blackwood ended up paying for his medicine and surgery, but he wants me to marry his grandson.Olivia said it so lightly, but her smile was bitter.

Human suffering was often nothing more than poverty and sickness, and the helplessness of being unable to break free from one’s current situation.

What’s your major?

Biomedical Engineering.

That’s amazing.Aubrey was filled with admiration. She loved girls like Olivia, who grew strong in adversity, kept striving, and were determined to forge a bright path for themselves.

Olivia’s eyes crinkled, her smile gentle. Aubrey, you’re the amazing one. I admire you so much.

Let’s encourage each other.

Okay.

Olivia nodded, returning the smile.

Just then, there was a knock on the door.

Come in,Aubrey called out.

Vincent pushed open the glass door and walked in, a surprised smile on his face. He said excitedly, Ms. Hayes, I have good news for you.,

What good news?Aubrey asked, curious.

Garrett Miller has been caught. The police just took him away from their firm.

Why?Aubrey asked, surprised.

Who knows?Vincent chuckled softly. Probably pissed off some big shot and got targeted. The moment he stepped out of line, they nailed him.

Targeted?

Only one person came to Aubrey’s mind.

Damon Blackwood.

He was never rash or hurried, always deliberate and steady. Knowing that Garrett posed a threat to her, he wouldn’t let it slide. He didn’t play power games or pull strings; he had his own rhythm and way of handling things.

Hearing Vincent’s news, Aubrey felt a wave of relief, though she kept her expression composed.

And who’s this?Vincent asked, glancing at Olivia.

This is my new assistant, Olivia Summers,Aubrey introduced. Liv, this is Vincent Hall.

Olivia gave a polite nod. Nice to meet you, Mr. Hall.

Vincent smiled. Nice to meet you too. I just wanted to share the good news. You two stay busy. With that, he left the office and closed the door behind him.

Olivia settled onto the small couch.

Aubrey was lost in thought, her mind filled with the idea of Garrett getting what he deserved.

It had come quickly.

During her time in New Haven City, she had gotten to know a few people in the police department, so she called an acquaintance to discreetly inquire about the situation.

Garrett had a long list of offenses. Falsifying evidence, obstruction of justice, bribery, and filing false lawsuits and all related to cases he’d handled in the past, not anything recent.

Someone had clearly dug deep to unearth all that dirt from his past.

That evening, after work, Olivia drove them home.

Her hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, her posture stiff and upright. Her clear, wide eyes rhythmically darted between the side and rearview mirrors, before settling intently on the road ahead.

Aubrey could tell she hadn’t had her license for long, but she didn’t call her out on it, or offer empty reassurance. Instead, she casually remarked, Liv, you’re a really steady driver.

It was the best possible encouragement. Her confidence visibly boosted, Olivia replied modestly, It’s just that the Hayes car is so reliable.

Sitting in the passenger seat, Aubrey felt a little bored. She wanted to make conversation, and get to know Olivia better in the process.

Liv, have you ever studied martial arts? Taekwondo, maybe?

I learned some martial arts from my grandfather when I was a kid. As an adult, I took taekwondo, but I’m not very good. It was just for exercise.

Do you like Zachary Blackwood?

Who’s Zachary Blackwood?Olivia asked, confused.

Aubrey paused. The guy Old Man Blackwood wanted to set you up with. His grandson.

Oh, I haven’t met him. He’s, like, ten years older than me. The generation gap is way too big. There’s no way we’d click.
