Aubrey didn’t lower her voice. The colleagues sitting nearby heard every word, and Serena Shaw heard it clearest of all. As someone who worked with Ryan every day, she found the situation both juicy and incredibly awkward.

Ryan’s face went dark. Aubrey,he snapped, his voice tight, that’s way out of line.

Out of line?Aubrey blinked, playing innocent. I was just speaking my mind. I’m sorry if the truth hurts. Tell you what, let’s add each other on the Grid.

She pulled out her phone and showed him her QR code.

Ryan didn’t reach for his phone. His expression was icy. We’re already friends on the Grid. As far as I know, you never deleted me.

Aubrey pulled her phone back and scrolled through her contacts. Which one are you?

It’s just Ryan. Why are you looking for my profile now?

When you eventually get divorced, you can come to me for the lawsuit.Aubrey’s tone was flat, completely indifferent. She found his profile on the Grid and shoved her phone screen in front of his face. Is this you? I’ll save your info. I’ll even give you a friends and familydiscount on the legal fees next time.

Damon watched from the side, fighting the urge to smirk. He looked at her with a mix of adoration and helplessness. The way she was so wild and unfiltered, completely disregarding everyone else’s feelingsit was honestly adorable.

Serena stared at Aubrey in pure shock. Aubrey looked so soft and sweet, like someone who wouldn’t hurt a fly, but she was Incredibly fierce. How could such a delicate, gentle voice say something so brutal?

Ryan’s face flashed through a dozen shades of pale and purple. He was so livid his fists were trembling and the veins on his forehead were bulging. He ground his teeth so hard his jaw muscles twitched, but he couldn’t find a single word to say.

He wasn’t even married yet, and she was already cursing him with a divorce?

Just as the atmosphere hit rock bottom, Damon added fuel to the fire. He pushed the invitation back toward Ryan. I don’t think we’ll have the time to make it to your wedding.

Ryan cleared his throat, his smile stiff and forced. If you can’t make it in person, just sending a gift is fine.

Definitely,Damon replied politely.

You’ve already taken two wedding gifts from Damon, and he hasn’t had the chance to get anything back from you yet,Serena eased. Damon, you’re really losing out here!

That made Ryan feel a little better. He couldn’t afford to be cold to Damon just because Aubrey was being a bitch. If anything, he had to kiss Damon’s ass. Lily’s career depended on the connections Damon could provide.

Lily had nagged him about it constantlystay on Damon’s good side, no matter what. He couldn’t let Aubrey ruin this for him. Picking up on Serena’s joke, Ryan forced a smile. When Damon gets married, I’ll make sure to double the cash in his wedding

card.

Ha.Aubrey let out a cold snort. Assuming he even invites you,she muttered under her breath.

It was quiet, but loud enough for Ryan to catch every word.

Ryan’s face burned with embarrassment and rage. He was so pissed he felt like he was losing years off his life. But for Damon’s sake, he swallowed his anger, though the food now tasted like ash. “Aubrey, seriously?he asked, his voice tight. Every word out of your mouth is a low blow. What did I even do to you?

You called me old,Aubrey said casually, popping a piece of food into her mouth. You mentioned how I’m almost thirty, unmarried, and childless. You said I’d be a geriatricmother in a few years. Do you honestly think any woman wants to hear that?Ryan gave a mocking smirk. I was just stating the facts. You are pushing thirty, Aubrey.

The provocation in his voice was thick enough to cut with a knife.

Mersu

Aubrey set her chopsticks down and wiped her mouth with a napkin. Her expression turned dead serious, her voice sharp. Just you wait. I’ll be married by thirty and have a kid by thirtyone. I’m going to rub the facts right in your face. And that wedding gift you mentioned? You’d better have double the cash ready. Just send the moneyyou’re not invited.

The table went dead silent.

Damon froze, his fork halfway to his mouth. His brows knit together, a flash of raw uncertainty and shock flickering in his eyes before his face darkened completely.

Serena noticed. Her gaze was fized on him, but Damon only had eyes for Aubrey.

Ryan just gave a dismissive scoff, clearly thinking she was bluffing

The rest of the meal was a total battlefield.

After dinner, Aubrey followed Damon back to the dorms.

They headed up the stairs, one after the other. Aubrey stopped after a few steps and looked back. Damon was trailing behind, head down, hands shoved deep into his jacket pockets. He looked completely drained.

She waited for him on the landing. He was so lost in his own head that he walked straight into her, nearly slamming her into the wall. He snapped out of it instantly, his hands flying out of his pockets to grab her and pull her back into his chest. Are you okay?be asked, his voice tight with panic.

I’m fine.Aubrey steadied herself after stumbling back. She looked up at his gloomy face. What’s on your mind? You’re totally out

of it.

Damon forced a bitter smile. He took her hand and pulled her along up the stairs. What you said to Ryanwere you serious?

About what?Aubrey asked, confused.

Getting married by thirty. Having a kid by thirtyone. His voice sounded weak, almost hollow.

I meant every word,Aubrey said firmly. She was already mentally calculating her next move.

Once this cold cleared up, she’d head straight back to the firm and refile the petition to reopen her father’s case.

Gach was stretched thin as it was, and being stationed in New Haven made it impossible for him to properly dig into a case in

Crestview,

f she could just get a retrial, she’d demand the Crestview police reopen the investigation. She had new evidence nowthe recorded ound of another man’s heavy breathing at the crime scene.

That alone was enough to establish reasonable doubt.

f she could find the real killer, her father’s exoneration was a sure thing. At the rate she was going, she was confident she could rack them down..

The only hurdle now was getting the DA’s office to actually accept the petition. How was she going to get a prosecutor to sign off

in it?

After all, Damon’s uncle was still a highranking official at the Crestview District Attorney’s Office.

He was going to be her biggest obstacle.

Six months?Damon stopped in his tracks, his eyes darkening as he stared at her in disbelief.

Aubrey gave a confident nod
