Chapter 216: Aubrey’s Heart Skips a Beat
Back in the dorm, Damon grabbed her medicine and poured her a glass of warm water. He watched her until she swallowed every pill.
“Want to take a nap?” Damon asked.
She shook her head. “I’ve slept too much already. I’m not really tired.”
‘I’ll get you some books then. Read for a bit, and rest when you feel like it.” He pulled two classic novels from a drawer and handed
them to her.
Aubrey took them, looking up at him curiously. “Are you heading to the base now?”
Damon looked down at her. “Yeah.”
When will you be back?”
Around dinner.”
Oh.” Aubrey clutched the heavy books to her chest, her lips curving into a tiny pout. She felt a sudden wave of clinginess. He hadn’t even left yet, and she was already missing him.
Dinner felt like a lifetime away.
Damon looked up, his dark eyes unreadable as he stared at her. He didn’t blink, his gaze so intense it made Aubrey’s heart skip a
>eat.
Her cheeks started to heat up. She looked away, shyly avoiding his eyes. She didn’t know why he was staring like that, but it made her feel incredibly self–conscious.
When he didn’t say anything for a long moment, she dropped her gaze to the floor.
The silence between them grew heavy, the air thick with a sudden, simmering heat.
She wondered if the way he was looking at her meant he wanted to kiss her.
But she was sick. She didn’t want to give him her cold. *Probably better if he doesn’t, she thought.
Honestly, if he had a strong enough immune system, she wouldn’t have said no. Her memory was a total blank–she had no idea vhat kissing even felt like. She was dying to know what it would be like with him.
fis lips looked soft and perfectly shaped–thin, sexy, and incredibly kissable…
I’m heading out,” Damon said abruptly. He turned and walked away.
Wait, what?” Aubrey’s thirsty thoughts came to a screeching halt. The anticipation shattered instantly. She watched him walk out. and shut the door without a single backward glance.
The felt her face go up in flames. Clutching the books, she dove back onto the bed and buried her face in the pillow, cringing so hard she wanted to crawl into a hole and die.
Damon wasn’t even thinking about kissing her. What the hell was she fantasizing about?
She shook the dirty thoughts out of her head, picked up the books he’d left, and forced herself to start reading.
A little while later, the meds started to kick in, making her feel heavy and drowsy.
She barely lasted an hour before she drifted off again.
Evening came, and the sun began to sink below the horizon
When she finally woke up, Damon still wasn’t back. The air was getting colder as the sky dimmed. She washed up, brushed her hair, and headed down to the courtyard to wait for him.

Aubrey spotted Damon instantly. He stood out in the crowd, head and shoulders above everyone else.
Excitement surged through her. She started to wave, his name on the tip of her tongue, but she suddenly froze.
Damon didn’t see her. Serena was right by his side, talking animatedly as they walked. They were so wrapped up in their conversation that they didn’t even notice her.
Aubrey’s smile vanished. Her hand fell slowly to her side. She stood silently by the edge of the courtyard, just watching them.
She knew they were colleagues. She knew they were probably just talking shop. But a sharp pang of jealousy hit her, making her chest feel tight and uncomfortable.
Serena noticed her first as they got closer. The second their eyes met, Aubrey quickly forced a tight, awkward smile.
Serena nudged Damon. “Your girlfriend is over there waiting for you.”
Damon looked up. His gaze was heavy, unreadable. He didn’t have much of a reaction, only saying a few more words to Serena before they parted ways.
Serena headed toward the cafeteria while he walked toward Aubrey.
Her heart hammered against her ribs as he closed the distance.
She realized then that even without her memories, she was falling for this man all over again. It felt like a teenage crush—the kind that made her feel shy, awkward, and completely exposed.
Thank God he was already her boyfriend. She didn’t have to chase him or work up the courage to confess. He was already hers.
It felt like she’d hit the jackpot without even trying.
Damon walked toward her, pulling off his jacket as he moved.
By the time he reached her, he had already draped the jacket over her shoulders. His movements were quick and efficient, his voice laced with concern. “It’s freezing. Why didn’t you wait inside?”
Aubrey gave him a soft smile, her eyes shining as she looked up at him. Wrapped in his oversized jacket, she felt the warmth instantly.
His scent lingered on the fabric–a faint, clean smell of pine. It was soothing.
She didn’t say anything. Damon reached out, pressing his palm to her forehead. “Still feeling under the weather?”
Aubrey looked up at him and shook her head.
The fever’s gone.” Damon hooked an arm around her shoulder, steering her toward the cafeteria. “Take another dose of meds after dinner, and you should be good to go.”
I’m fine, really. It was just a common cold. A good night’s sleep was all I needed, Aubrey said dismissively.
Is it boring for you, staying here?”
“Not really.” She meant it. At least she got to see him during meals and at night. It was much better than being alone back at Blackwood Crescent
He said, “Once you’re fully recovered, I’ll take you back home.”
Aubrey suddenly went quiet.
She felt a pang of sadness. She didn’t want to go back to Blackwood Crescent alone. It was too far away from him, and they’d never

But she couldn’t stay at the base forever. She had to fight for her father. Every second counted. She needed to file the appeal, gather evidence, and find the real killer to clear his name. Once that was done, she’d marry Damon when she turned thirty.
After a long silence, she finally whispered, “Okay.”
