Chapter 221: Aubrey Initiates the Kiss
After cleaning up, Damon headed to the kitchen to start breakfast.
Aubrey finished up shortly after. She stepped out of the bathroom, bundled up in warm clothes, and tied her long hair back. She kept it simple, just adding a touch of light makeup to her face.
The housekeeper was off for the day. It was just the two of them.
The morning sun streamed through the glass windows, casting the shadows of the frames across the living room floor. The whole place felt bright, cozy, and perfectly warm.
He’d made noodles, steamed egg custard, and sliced some fruit, along with a glass of warm milk. It was a perfect, healthy spread.
Damon was an amazing cook. Better yet, whenever he was home, he never let her lift a finger. It warmed her heart in a way she couldn’t quite describe.
As she ate her breakfast, a thought drifted through her mind. Before she lost her memory, she had spent years with this man. To be loved and spoiled like this for so long… she must have been the happiest woman alive.
Falling into a deep depression after losing him? It made total sense.
With the way she felt about him now, she couldn’t walk away even if she wanted to. The mere thought of leaving him felt like a weight on her chest.
Damon ate in silence, poised and graceful. Aubrey kept stealing glances at him, her heart racing like a trapped bird. She could feel herself falling for him all over again.
Once they finished, he started clearing the table while she gathered her things for work.
Aubrey grabbed her bag and stepped out of the house. She was halfway through the door when she heard his voice from behind.
“Bree.”
She stopped and turned around at the entrance.
Damon walked over, a light gray plaid scarf in his hands. He looped it around her neck and gently pulled her long hair out from under the fabric, tying a perfect knot.
Aubrey looked up at him, her eyes locked on his. The fabric was soft against her skin, warm and comforting. It carried a faint, clean scent that belonged entirely to him.
“Where did this come from?” she asked, curious.
“It’s mine. You don’t mind, right?”
“Not at all.” Aubrey gave him a sweet smile, her clear eyes shimmering.
“It’s freezing out. Don’t let yourself catch a cold.” Damon finished tying the scarf and let his hands drop, his gaze lingering on her face. “Come straight home after work.”
“I will,” Aubrey replied softly.
Damon offered a small smile and patted her head. “Go on. Get to work.”
Aubrey nodded and turned toward the garage.
She took a few steps, then couldn’t help but look back.
He was still standing by the door, tall and striking in his black sweater, his eyes following her with a gentle warmth.
She looked away and kept walking, but something tugged at her heart, making her feet feel heavy. She looked back again. Damon hadn’t moved. His hands were tucked into his pockets, leaning casually as he watched her go.

Seeing her run back, Damon thought she’d forgotten something. He yanked his hands out of his pockets, his expression tightening with concern. “What’s wrong? Did you forget something?”
Aubrey didn’t say a word. With her bag still hanging off her shoulder, she ran to him and threw her arms around his neck. She pulled him down, tipping up on her toes to press her lips against his.
Damon froze. His pupils shook, and his entire body went rigid. For a few seconds, his mind was a total blank. He didn’t even react.
Aubrey’s face burned, her heart hammering. She’d summoned all her courage for that goodbye kiss, but when he didn’t respond, embarrassment washed over her. Feeling shy and awkward, she ended the brief kiss after only a few seconds.
She let go, dropping back onto her heels. Trying to act like she was composed, she avoided his eyes and turned to run away.
She had only taken one step when Damon suddenly grabbed her wrist. He yanked her back, pulling her hard against his chest. His arms felt like iron as he leaned down and crushed his lips to hers.
This was nothing like her light touch. His kiss was fierce and hungry. He swung her around and pinned her against the wall by the door, forcing her mouth open. He kissed her with a sudden, desperate intensity, claiming her mouth as his own.
Her bag slipped off her shoulder and hit the ground.
He kissed her with a hunger that felt like he wanted to swallow her whole right there at the door.
His powerful frame pinned her against the wall, leaving no room for her to breathe. The raw, desperate need in his touch made her feel like he wanted to crush her into him.
She finally understood why Damon had been avoiding this for so long.
starving. A simple kiss was never going to be enough to satisfy the hunger inside him.
ry of ever kissing him before.
she realized that beneath his calm, gentlemanly exterior, he was dangerous. His passion was raw and madness that stripped away her logic and left her head spinning.
of time. Her lungs were burning for air, and her lips felt swollen and numb under the intensity of his mouth.
The storm finally began to settle, leaving only the sound of his heavy, ragged breathing against her skin.
Her legs felt like jelly, and her heart was racing. It took a long moment before she could find her voice. “I… I have to go to work,” she murmured breathlessly.
Damon pressed his forehead against hers, his eyes dark and clouded with desire. “Don’t tempt me like that again,” he rasped. “Or I won’t let you go to work at all.”
Aubrey felt a little stung, her voice soft and weak. “I wasn’t trying to tempt you. I just wanted to give you a kiss. I didn’t know you’d react like this.”
Damon gave a bitter laugh and let out a heavy sigh. “You really are clueless, aren’t you? You’re innocent, sure, but that innocence is lighting me on fire.”
“I’m sorry,” Aubrey whispered, her face heating up as she looked down shyly. “Maybe we could…”
Go back to the bedroom?
She couldn’t bring herself to say the words out loud. Her whole body felt flushed and feverish.
Instead, he let go of her and took a step back, his burning gaze locked onto her reddened face. “Go to work. You have that meeting with Ryan. Don’t stand him up.”

This time, he didn’t stay to watch her leave. He looked like he desperately needed some space to cool off.
Aubrey leaned against the wall, taking a long moment to catch her breath and steady her heart. Her legs felt weak. Finally, she gripped her bag and made her way to the garage.
As she walked, she touched her lips. Her fingertips brushed the exact spot where Damon had just kissed her. His scent still lingered, and her mouth felt slightly swollen and sore.
So this was what it was like to kiss him–a total rush, addictive and impossible to resist. She replayed the moment in her head, her face burning with shy excitement.
By the time she drove to the office, her racing heart had finally calmed down enough for her to focus on work.
Right on schedule, Ryan showed up at her office for their meeting.
He looked like a total wreck. Miserable, pathetic, and completely broken.
After talking to him, Aubrey finally got the full picture. She realized Ryan was an absolute idiot–stupider than anyone she’d ever
met.
While he was still married to Sierra, he’d already lent Lily Moore $200,000 for her daughter’s medical bills. No IOU. No paperwork. Nothing.
Once they got together officially, the spending only ramped up. A $280,000 marriage settlement, a $150,000 electric car, $80,000 in solid gold jewelry, plus a mountain of designer bags, clothes, watches, phones, and makeup.
All in all, he’d blown nearly $1,000,000.
He even sold his place in Crestview City to put a down payment on a new house in New Haven City. He’d even put Lily’s name on the deed. Now, he was stuck with an $8,000 monthly mortgage.
He had drained every cent he owned for that woman. Now, he couldn’t even afford child support for his own son. And the kicker? He just found out Lily had been sleeping with clients just to hit her sales targets. She had no bottom line.
He was drowning in regret. He didn’t want to marry Lily anymore, but he couldn’t get a penny of his money back. Since he was broke and couldn’t afford a retainer, he swallowed his pride and begged Aubrey to take the case. He promised to pay her once he got the money back.
For a lawyer like Aubrey, a case like this was child’s play. It would be easy money.
