Chapter 220: Do You Want to Kiss Me?
Aubrey’s heart leaped when she saw Damon’s reply. She didn’t waste a second, grabbing her pillow and heading over to his room.
Damon opened the door for her.
She stepped inside and looked back to see him biting his lip, clearly trying not to laugh. He shoved one hand in his pocket and strolled toward her. A massive cockroach, huh?”
“Yeah, it was huge. It could fly, too.” Aubrey lied through her teeth, though her heart was hammering against her ribs with guilt.
At the mention of it flying, Damon couldn’t hold it back anymore. He let out a soft chuckle.
Aubrey tossed her pillow onto the bed and turned to glare at him, looking annoyed. “What’s so funny? I’m not lying.”
“Right Damon cleared his throat, doing his best to look serious. “Roaches have been an issue lately. It’s getting cold out, so they’re probably flying in from the sewers to find a warm spot for the winter.”
Exactly,” Aubrey muttered.
She pulled back the duvet and climbed into bed, tucking the covers up to her chin. She pushed her long hair back, her pale, pretty face looking soft and tired under the cool white light. “I’m going to sleep. Are you coming?”
Was she really making up excuses just to sleep with him? Damon couldn’t wrap his head around what she was thinking.
“Yeah.” He flicked the light off, walked around to the other side of the bed, and slid under the covers.
The room plunged into total darkness.
There was about a foot of space between them.
He lay there stiff as a board, his breathing shallow. He looked like he was fast asleep, but his mind was a total mess.
Suddenly, the blankets rustled. Aubrey turned on her side, scooting closer until her scent filled his lungs–that sweet, intoxicating fragrance he knew too well.
Damon’s fists clenched. Heat surged through him, a tight, heavy ache coiling low in his gut.
‘Damon.”
Aubrey’s voice was soft, barely a whisper, but it was sweet enough to drive him crazy.
Just the sound of it had his mind racing. He was on the edge of losing it.
He swallowed hard, his throat dry. “Yeah?” his voice came out rough.
Do you want to kiss me?” she murmured.
Damon gripped the sheets so hard his knuckles turned white. His heart was thundering in his chest, and his breathing turned heavy. He licked his dry lips, feeling like he was about to boil over.
There were no words in the world more tempting than those.
As he hesitated, he felt Aubrey’s soft fingers reach out, covering his clenched fist.
His self–control was snapping.
He couldn’t take her being this bold. He exhaled a shaky breath, feeling like he was going to explode. “Bree,” he rasped, his voice raw. “If I kiss you in this bed, I’m not going to be able to stop. Don’t kiss me unless you’re ready to go all the way.”
Caleb had barely finished speaking when Aubrey’s hand suddenly jerked back.
The reaction was so instant it stung.
A sense of emptiness washed over him, dousing the fire in his blood.

Of course. She was just messing with him again.
The Aubrey he knew might look innocent and sweet on the outside, but she was a little devil at heart. She was playful, mischievous, and could be ruthless when she wanted to be.
Now that she’d recovered from her depression, that side of her was even more obvious.
But he never regretted loving her, and he definitely didn’t regret making her
that
surgery.
From the time she was eighteen to now, at twenty–nine, he’d had the best years of her life. He had no regrets.
They’d been through it all over the years–the breakups, the makeups, the pain, and the absolute bliss. If her final choice was to narry someone else, he’d accept it. He wouldn’t force her to stay with him.
As long as she was living her life on her terms and stayed happy, nothing else mattered.
His own feelings were an afterthought.
sleep wouldn’t come. He lay there, trapped in a spiral of messy thoughts.
Beside him, Aubrey was already deep in sleep, her breathing slow and steady.
n the dead of night, Caleb quietly turned on his side and stole a kiss from her soft, plush lips. She didn’t move an inch.
That one soft kiss was enough to settle his heart. He closed his eyes, lying beside her as they drifted into separate dreams.
The next morning, Aubrey was jolted awake by her phone’s alarm.
She squinted through bleary eyes and reached a hand out from the warm blankets to kill the alarm. She quickly yanked her hand
ack under the covers and scooted closer to Damon.
He was a furnace–tall, solid, and pure muscle. She couldn’t help herself; she wrapped her arms around his bicep and nuzzled her ace against him.
The movement woke Damon up. Through his thin pajamas, he could clearly feel how soft and curvy she was against his arm. He ooked at her with hazy eyes and whispered, “Time for work?”
Mhm,” Aubrey mumbled, her face buried in his arm. She pulled the duvet over her head. “It’s so warm in here, and it’s freezing
utside. I don’t want to get up.”
Damon reached out and stroked her hair. “Then don’t,” he murmured affectionately. “Sleep a little longer.”
I can’t. I’m meeting Ryan Carter this morning.”
What kind of case are you handling for him?”
Lily Moore cheated on him. He wants to sue to get back all the money he spent on her, and he’s asking for a ‘friend’s rate for the egal work.”
And you’re actually going to help him?”
Help him? No way. I’m getting paid,” Aubrey clarified. “Besides, if he gets his money back, he can finally pay the child support he
wes my best friend.”
Damon shook his head. “Karma caught up to him fast. It’s better this way, though. At least they hadn’t tied the knot yet, or he
would’ve lost a lot more.”
“Exactly. No matter how much I can’t stand him, he’s still my best friend’s ex and Buddy’s father. I just hope he treats Buddy right from now on. I’d rather see his money go to his son than to a gold–digger like her.”
“Right. Get up,” Damon said, pushing himself up and pulling her along with him. ‘T’ll go make breakfast.
