He’d read her loud and clear. A wave of annoyance flared up inside her. Aubrey marched right up to him, pouting, and shoved her handbag into his chest.
Damon caught it instinctively.
Before he could say a word, she grabbed his lapels, pulling his jacket open. She pressed her face against his chest and took a deep,
hard sniff.
Damon was completely lost, his eyes fixed on her as she worked.
She didn’t stop at his chest. She moved to his collar, then stood on her tiptoes to sniff his neck and his jaw, acting like a little puppy searching for a scent.
Once she was sure there wasn’t even a hint of Serena’s perfume on him, she finally let out a breath of relief.
Damon looked bewildered, but he kept his arms spread slightly, letting her have her way.
Aubrey dropped back onto her heels, her hands still clutching his collar. They were inches apart as she looked up at him.
His eyes were bright, a faint smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. He actually seemed to be enjoying her little “inspection.” “What are you sniffing for?” he asked, his voice soft as silk.
Aubrey didn’t even try to hide her frustration. She was blunt. “Birds of a feather, Damon. I was checking to see if you’re just like Ryan–cheating on me behind my back.”
Instead of getting angry, Damon actually let out a soft laugh. “So, you really think Serena and I were hooking up in here?”
Aubrey nodded. “Yeah.”
“Ryan isn’t my friend. We’re just colleagues,” Damon explained, his voice gentle. “And I’m not that kind of man. I don’t cheat, and I would never betray you.”
“How do I know you’re telling the truth?” Aubrey’s cheeks puffed out, looking completely salty. “I don’t really know you that well anymore. Besides, Serena is beautiful. When a guy and a girl are alone in a room together, things happen.”
Damon gave her a doting smile and reached out to ruffle her hair. “What is going on in that head of yours? You’re more beautiful than any
any woman I’ve ever seen. We live together, we share a bed, and I’m literally about to explode from holding myself back—yet I still haven’t made a move on you. Why would I ever have eyes for anyone else?”
Aubrey pushed his hand away, pretending to be annoyed that he’d messed up her hair. But hearing him talk like that–showering her with compliments and swearing his loyalty–felt damn good. A sweet smile broke across her face. “Stop it. You’re ruining my
air.”
Damon let his hand drop. “So,” he asked softly, “did you smell anything?”
I did.” Aubrey feigned a glare, looking at him with mock displeasure. “I smell a scent.”
Damon frowned, looking completely lost. He lifted his collar to sniff it, then his arm. “What? Where? There’s nothing!”
Yes, there is.” Aubrey grabbed his jacket again and stood on her tiptoes. She leaned into his shoulder, her breath ghosting over his earlobe as she whispered, “It’s your scent. It’s unique. It smells so good.”
Damon let out a breath of relief. He hooked his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. He looked down into her mischievous eyes, his voice dropping to a low, husky vibration. “You little brat. You’re playing with me, aren’t you?”
Aubrey wrapped her arms around his neck and gave a small huff. “So? Who told you to bring a woman home?”
Damon corrected her, his tone dead serious. “She’s a colleague. At work, I don’t see gender.”
“I think Serena Shaw has a crush on you.”

Damon chuckled, sounding completely unbothered. “Your boyfriend is a handsome guy. It’s hard to stop people from liking me. As long as she doesn’t try to cross the line, she isn’t worth the energy.”
Aubrey couldn’t help but laugh. Looking at his sharp features and undeniably handsome face, she still had to poke fun at him.
“Narcissist!”
Her smile was radiant. Damon felt his own mood lift just watching her. If acting a little full of himself was all it took to make her laugh like that, it was a price he’d pay any day.
He leaned down, his face inches from hers. “Are you jealous of Serena?”
Aubrey froze. She bit back a smile, too embarrassed to answer, her gaze drifting down to his lips.
A memory of that morning flashed through her mind–the way he had pinned her against the wall and kissed her senseless. A sudden wave of heat surged through her, leaving her throat dry.
Kissing him was definitely becoming an addiction.
She wanted to feel him again. Summoning her courage, she stood on her tiptoes and leaned in close. “Damon,” she whispered shyly.
“Kiss me.”
Damon tilted his head back, dodging her. A smirk played on his lips. “No.”
“Just one kiss,” Aubrey insisted, leaning in further to chase his lips.
Damon dodged again, his hands tightening around her waist to make sure she didn’t trip while standing on her tiptoes.
He kept saying no and pulling his face away, but his grip on her waist never loosened, keeping her body pressed flush against his.
Aubrey was getting frustrated.
She’d actually voiced such an embarrassing request, and he was seriously rejecting her?
Her pride couldn’t take the hit. She pulled her hands back and cupped his face, yanking him down to force the kiss.
He was laughing, putting up a playful struggle, but she managed to pin him down long enough to press her lips against the corner of his mouth.
knew he was doing it on purpose. She let out a frustrated laugh and punched his chest. “Stop playing hard to get! Are you
let me kiss you or not?”
ppening.” Damon grabbed her bag with one hand and hooked his other arm around her waist, lifting her clean off the ound. He carried her toward the house like that, her feet dangling in the air. “Let’s go home and make dinner.”
nnot eating! I’m mad!” Aubrey pushed against his chest. “Put me down!”
‘Didn’t you just get your kiss?” Damon’s grin widened.
“The corner of your mouth doesn’t count!” she grumbled.
Damon carried her into the living room and set her down on the sofa. He leaned in close, one hand gripping the back of the couch while the other dropped her bag and pinned her shoulder so she couldn’t move. “Just sit here and relax,” he said, his voice dropping into a gentle tone. “Wait for dinner.”
“You’re really not going to let me kiss you?” Aubrey’s competitive side was screaming. She felt frustrated and helpless, but she wasn’t ready to let him win.
“How can you be so forward?” Damon couldn’t hide his smirk if he tried, yet he still put on a serious face, acting all modest. “Don’t be like that. You’re going to make me shy.”
