After her shower, Aubrey dried her hair and walked into the living room for dinner, dressed in oversized, fluffy pajamas.
It was late, and the living room felt warm and cozy with the heater humming. The two of them ate in peace.
Aubrey chewed her food slowly, her eyes drifting toward him every few seconds.
The way he ate was so refined. He had this natural, effortless grace about him.
Just looking at him made her heart race.
Damon dropped a piece of fish into her bowl. “Focus on your food. Stop staring at my face.”
Aubrey’s cheeks flushed hot instantly. Panicked and embarrassed, she ducked her head and busied herself by shoving the fish into her mouth. “Stop being so full of yourself,” she muttered under her breath. “I wasn’t looking at you.”
Damon’s eyes crinkled, a teasing half–smile playing on his lips as he watched her face turn bright red. He decided to let her off the 100k and changed the subject. “How’s it going back at the firm? Are you settling in okay?”
It’s good,” she said. “I haven’t run into any trouble.”
How much are you planning to charge Ryan for his case?”
A friend’s discount. $80,000.”
Damon gave a faint smile and didn’t say anything else. He just kept silently putting meat on her plate, wanting her to eat more.
After dinner.
Damon loaded the dishwasher and tidied up the kitchen before heading to his room to shower.
Aubrey curled up on the living room sofa, looking over some landmark cases. She snacked on the cherries Damon had washed for
er, feeling completely at ease.
An hour later.
Damon finished his shower and walked into the living room. He was wearing the same style of plush pajamas as hers, just in a lifferent color. He poured himself a glass of warm water and walked toward her, taking a sip.
Aubrey raised an eyebrow. She glanced at his pajamas, then down at her own. “Wait,” she asked, curious. “Why are your pajamas dentical to mine?”
Damon didn’t miss a beat. “They’re a matching set. You bought them for
us back then.”
Oh.” Aubrey popped a cherry into her mouth. A surge of sweetness hit her–both from the fruit and from a fuzzy feeling she ouldn’t quite explain.
he looked away, refocusing on her case files.
Damon sat down beside her and set his cup on the coffee table. “Whatcha reading?”
Some classic case studies,” Aubrey said, sliding the folder toward him. “Want a look?”
Jamon shook his head. “Pass.” He pulled his phone from his pocket and leaned back against the plush sofa. He tapped the screen ind started playing a game.
There was nothing unusual about him being on his phone.
But then Aubrey heard game sound effects. She set her papers down, rested her hands on his thighs, and leaned in close to his face o get a look at the screen. “What are you playing?”
Damon didn’t answer. His thumb just kept tapping away at the screen.
Aubrey stared at the screen for a few seconds. She turned to look him in the eye, her expression full of shock. ‘Are you.. playing

Damon let out a helpless sigh. “It’s the middle of the night. Since I’m not allowed to play with my girlfriend, Candy Crush is the only thing left to play with.”
Play with your girlfriend?
The suggestive comment caught Aubrey completely off guard. Her ears turned hot, and her heart hammered against her ribs. She elt a rush of pure shyness.
But Damon? He was deadpan. Not a hint of emotion in his voice.
It was the classic case of the speaker being casual while the listener’s head was spinning.
He was a far cry from the “innocent” guy he’d been pretending to be earlier.
Aubrey laughed and poked fun at him. “Wait, who was the one refusing to kiss me earlier? Who was acting all pure and holy, like he vas guarding his virtue? I just wanted a kiss, and you told me my mind was in the gutter. Now, a few hours later, you’re suddenly rying to get laid?”
Damon stopped. His brows knit together as he looked at her, his voice dripping with shock. “I meant you were busy. You didn’t have ime to talk, watch a movie, or play games with me, so I’m playing Candy Crush… When did I ever say anything about sleeping with
ou?”
Aubrey’s face went nuclear. Mortification washed over her. She bit her lip, wanting the floor to swallow her whole.
Damon couldn’t stop himself from laughing. “Wow. Your mind really is in the gutter, isn’t it?”
Aubrey let out a sharp breath, fuming. “Yeah, keep playing dumb. You’re doing this just to piss me off!”
I’m not faking it. You used to be so thirsty, messing with me every single day.” Damon tugged at the crew neck of his pajamas, haking sure he was covered up tight as if he were terrified she’d catch a glimpse of skin. He scooted back warily, his voice tight with mock tension. “Don’t try anything funny. If you try to take me by force, I’m screaming for help.”
Aubrey narrowed her eyes, letting out a sharp, frustrated laugh. “Go ahead, scream! It’s just the two of us in this big house. I’d love > see who exactly is going to come to your rescue.”
Damon slammed his hand over his mouth, his eyes wide with a flicker of mock panic, looking as if she were some kind of predator bout to ravage him.
Aubrey was done with his “innocent victim” act. She couldn’t stand it for another second. She lunged at him, straddling his lap and inning his wrists against the sofa cushions before diving in to kiss him.
He suddenly toppled over sideways.
Aubrey let him pull her down onto the sofa. She grabbed his strong wrists and pinned them above his head, straddling his stomach.
he hovered over him, “dominating” him from above.
Damon looked up at Aubrey. Her face was flushed red, and she looked adorably annoyed as she sat on him, “forcing her will on
He couldn’t help but chuckle.
Honestly, with how little strength she had, he could’ve pinned her down with one hand if he wanted to.
Aubrey glared at him, half–annoyed and half–flustered. “One kiss and you’re already turned on. Why are you still playing hard to get?”
That’s exactly why I didn’t let you kiss me!” Damon shot back.
‘So you’re the thirsty one here, right?”
Nope,” Damon denied instantly. “Aubrey is the thirsty one.”
