Aubrey’s forced move had ignited a wildfire.
The tension was at a breaking point.
They were so lost in the kiss that they didn’t hear the car pull up outside, nor did they notice the sound of the front door unlocking
It wasn’t until footsteps approached that a panicked gasp rang out. “Oh! I’m so sorry…”
Tracy stood there, clutching a box, and quickly spun around in embarrassment. She kept her back to the two of them, still tangled together on the sofa.
The sudden intrusion left all three of them frozen in awkwardness. Aubrey scrambled off Damon, her face burning. She retreated to the edge of the sofa, frantically trying to smooth down her messy hair.
“Damon, Aubrey! Sorry! My bad!” Tracy scrambled back toward the door, still holding her box. Tm going back out! I’ll knock this time!” She practically bolted, slamming the door behind her.
Aubrey wanted to sink into the floor. The humiliation was overwhelming. Her heart hammered against her ribs, and she felt like she could die of embarrassment.
When she looked at Damon, he was sitting up with a half–smile on his face, looking completely unbothered.
Still flushed with shame, Aubrey whispered a sharp complaint, “That was so humiliating. This is all your fault.”
“My sister’s an adult,” Damon said. He grabbed a glass of water from the coffee table and took a few long gulps, trying to kill the heat still pulsing through him.
A knock sounded at the door, followed by Tracy’s cheerful voice. “Damon? Aubrey? Is it safe to come in?”
Tracy had lived there for a while and still had the door code. She was used to coming and going as she pleased, so she’d forgotten to knock. She definitely hadn’t expected to catch them mid–makeout in the living room.
Stop knocking and just come in,” Damon called out.
Tracy walked back in, still clutching the box. The panic from before was gone, replaced by a massive, teasing grin. She was beaming Seeing things move so fast between her brother and Aubrey made her genuinely thrilled.
Aubrey’s face was still bright red as she gave an awkward wave. “Hey, Tracy. Good evening.”
“Evening, Aubrey!” Tracy walked over and sat next to her, thumping the box onto the coffee table. “Mom told me to bring this over for you. It’s got premium health supplements, herbal extracts, and saffron. There are some luxury wellness tonics in here, too. You just got over being sick, so she wants to make sure you take care of yourself.”
Aubrey looked at the box, her heart softening. “Tell her thank you for me. It really means a lot.
Tracy gave Damon a playful look while he sipped his water. “Damon, Aubrey’s still recovering. She’s weak. You really need to show
some restraint.”
Damon nearly choked. He swallowed hard, pulled the glass away, and let out a couple of rough coughs.
Aubrey wanted the floor to swallow her whole. Her ears were burning hot.
Damon finally caught his breath and shot Tracy a glare. “Since when do you have a say in my private life, brat?”
Tracy grinned. “Wouldn’t dream of it.”
Damon set the empty glass down. “Actually, you saw the whole thing. Aubrey was the one jumping me. Tell her to show some
restraint.”
Tracy stifled a giggle, her eyes sparkling as she turned to Aubrey. “Don’t worry, Aubrey. I didn’t see a thing.”
Aubrey felt her face go up in flames. She was so embarrassed her skin felt hot to the touch, and she shot Damon a murderous glare.

Damon smirked, looking like he didn’t have a care in the world. His expression was a silent challenge: ‘Bring it on. I’m waiting.” Tracy stood right between them, but she couldn’t miss the electricity. They were practically undressing each other with their eyes. She quickly hopped to her feet. “Aubrey, besides dropping off these tonics, I actually have something else to ask you.”
Aubrey looked up at her. “What is it?”
The family gathering is next month, on the Winter Gala. Everyone’s heading to Grandpa’s estate for dinner. Mom told me to ask if ou want to come. If you’re not up for it, Mom and Dad won’t force you. They won’t be upset, I promise.”
Damon’s expression soured instantly.
Aubrey hesitated, her eyes drifting toward Damon.
Damon met her gaze, his voice dropping to a gentle murmur. “You don’t have to go. Don’t feel pressured.”
he really didn’t like Aunt Hannah’s side of the family. The thought of playing nice and faking smiles just to maintain ‘family ties” nade her skin crawl.
ut they
were still family. Damon had to go; there was no way around it.
he didn’t want to be the outsider in his family. She’d go, but she wasn’t going to play the timid, people–pleasing wallflower. Tell Mom and Dad I’m in,” she said. “I’ll go with your brother.”
racy flashed a brilliant grin, her tone mock–serious. “Perfect. I’ll report back to the Queen Mother immediately–Damon and Aubrey will be attending as planned.” She took a step back and gave a playful, formal bow. “Sleep well, you two. I’m out.”
Aubrey laughed at her antics. “Drive safe,” she called out.
racy waved over her shoulder as she walked away. “Will do! Bye, Aubrey!”
Aubrey stood and watched her go. “Bye.”
Tracy headed out of the living room and pulled the front door shut.
Aubrey walked over to the coffee table and pulled a box of premium health supplements from the container. Her palm brushed gainst the cool, transparent casing. Seeing the high–quality contents inside made her chest tighten with warmth.
Damon’s mother still looked out for her. This kind of family love only made her feel like she could never let go of Damon.
Damon walked up to her, took the box from her hands, and set it back in the container.
She blinked, looking up at him.
His eyes were clouded with worry. “If you don’t like it, or if it makes you unhappy, don’t go,” he said softly. “Don’t force yourself just o please others.”
Aubrey chuckled. “I’m not forcing anything. I really don’t like some of those people, but who says I’m the one who’s going to be miserable? Maybe it’ll be them.”
Damon frowned, looking confused.
Aubrey let out a calm, effortless laugh. “Don’t worry,” she reassured him. “I’m not going to suck up to anyone just to fit in. My rule is simple: if you don’t mess with me, I won’t mess with you. But if you do? I’ll hit back ten times harder. I’m not letting myself get pushed around, not even a little bit.”
Hearing her say that, Damon finally let out a breath, looking relieved.
Suddenly, it clicked. Aubrey grabbed the front of his pajamas, shooting him a mock–glare. “Wait a minute,” she whispered, her eyes narrowing. “Did you seriously just tell Tracy that I “forced” you?”
