Chapter 228: Damon’s Misunderstanding
During dinner, Aubrey noticed Damon seemed off. He was quiet, and his mood was clearly hitting rock bottom.
She asked what was wrong, but he just said it was nothing.
After her shower, she lay in bed and scrolled through her texts with Damon.
It was a normal conversation–nothing out of line. Only the last message, “Done replying,” sounded a bit sharp, but it shouldn’t have been enough to put him in such a funk, right?
She thought it over but couldn’t see how she was the problem. Maybe he was just fried from work or had hit a wall with some roject he couldn’t solve.
Aubrey stopped overthinking it. She flipped her phone to Do Not Disturb, turned off the lights, and went to sleep.
The next morning, Damon headed back to the office.
The housekeeper returned from her time off and took over the kitchen and the daily meals again.
After that, Damon stayed busy, and so did she. Most mornings, they missed each other at breakfast. They only really saw each other vhen they got home for dinner, and even then, they’d head straight to their separate rooms to wash up and sleep right after eating.
t hit Natalie that Damon was pulling away. He didn’t seem to want to be near her anymore. He had even stopped talking as much. Yet, there were moments when he would just… look at her. He’d stare at her with an intense, lingering gaze, silent but full of a raw, ender love he couldn’t seem to hide.
This hot–and–cold act was starting to get to her. It made her feel completely uneasy.
There was still no word on her father’s appeal. She was still stuck in a waiting game.
On top of Ryan’s case, she’d taken on a few other high–profile ones. Some days she was buried in work, but she still made it a point o get home on time every evening to have dinner with Damon.
t had been almost two weeks since Damon had held her. He hadn’t kissed her once.
She wanted to reach out, to be close to him, but she felt too self–conscious. She couldn’t find an excuse to break the ice.
Then, late one night in early December, it started to snow.
The first snow of the year.
Natalie stood by the window, looking out at the streetlights in the courtyard. Tiny, feathery flakes danced through the soft, amber low of the lights.
A memory suddenly flashed through her mind. It was a late night years ago, with the first snow falling. Damon had lit fireworks in he middle of an empty plaza and ran back to her, pulling her into a tight hug.
They watched the brilliant display together under the light snow. When the last spark faded, Damon pulled open his overcoat, wrapping her against his chest. He leaned down and kissed her.
When the kiss finally broke, he whispered against her lips, “Bree, I want every winter for the rest of our lives to be like this. Watching the first snow, seeing the fireworks, and kissing. Okay?”
Why?” she asked.
Damon smiled. “No reason. I just want a promise from you.”
“What if we move to Crestview City? It doesn’t snow there.”
“As long as I’m with you, it’ll feel like the first snow anywhere we go. We can see fireworks anywhere. And I can kiss you anywhere.”
That fragment of a memory had resurfaced because of tonight’s snow.

Aubrey realized it then–her memory was finally starting to return.

She didn’t know if the past would bring back the darkness. She didn’t know if she could handle the bad parts or if she’d be able to let them go.
But with Damon by her side, she knew she wouldn’t have to be sad anymore.
She grabbed her phone and sent Damon a quick text.
[Damon, it’s snowing. The first snow of the year.]
After sending the text, she turned her gaze back to the window.
A moment later, her phone buzzed. It was Damon: [I
see it.]
Aubrey smiled and typed back: [Want to watch it together? Can I come over?]
[It’s late. Get some sleep. Goodnight.]
Aubrey stared at the screen. Her heart sank.
Just two weeks ago, he was holding her, kissing her like he’d never let go. How could he be this cold now?
She tried to tell herself he was just busy. He was under a lot of pressure at work, and with the promotion to Chief Engineer, he barely had a second to breathe, let alone spend time with her.
She told herself they weren’t reckless teenagers anymore. Life couldn’t be all fun and games.
But tonight was the first snow. The memory in her mind was so vivid, so real.
Had he forgotten?
The more she thought about it, the more it hurt.
She set her phone down, grabbed a heavy coat from the closet, and headed out to find him.
The freezing air from the courtyard swept through the hallway, biting at her skin. Even with the coat, she shivered.
Damon’s room was right next door.
She stood at his door and raised her hand to knock. Suddenly, another flash of memory hit her. She knew the code. And her
ingerprint–it was already in the electronic lock’s system.
After a moment of hesitation, she pressed her thumb against the scanner. The lock clicked, and she turned the handle.
The room was warm, filled with a soft, amber glow. Damon stood by the massive floor–to–ceiling window, staring out at the falling snow.
He turned his head when he heard the door open.
Their eyes met. Aubrey froze, a knot of unease tightening in her chest.
Didn’t he say it was late? That he was going to sleep?
Why was he watching the snow alone? Why didn’t he want to watch it with her?
Did he just not want to be near her?
It wasn’t that he was being cold–not exactly. His gaze was still deep and lingering. When he saw her walk in, he even gave her a gentle smile. “Not in bed yet?” he asked softly.
Aubrey didn’t answer. She shut the door behind her and walked toward him.
Damon looked away, turning his attention back to the night sky outside.
“It’s not that
you
didn’t want to see the first snow. You just didn’t want to see it with me,” Aubrey said, her voice sharp. “I don’t know

when it started, but you’ve been pulling away from me. You’re freezing me out.”
Damon still didn’t say a word.
