Chapter 229: His Family Takes Her Side
Aubrey raced back to her own room. She shed her jacket, wiping at her eyes, and scrambled into bed, yanking the duvet over her
head.
She buried herself under the covers, tucking them tight until she was completely hidden.
But the thick fabric couldn’t drown out her muffled sobs. The duvet shook with every violent tremor that racked her body. She didn’t understand. Everyone said Damon loved her.
Even after he’d lost his memory, he’d been so good to her. They were happy together. Why did he suddenly want to end things? And the fact that he wanted to break up but expected her to say the words first? She couldn’t wrap her head around it.
Men were all the same. When the honeymoon phase ended, all that mattered was whether they had a damn conscience–and clearly, he didn’t.
Aubrey cried until her heart felt raw, her mind a spinning, numb mess. The more she thought about it, the more it hurt.
Finally, she sat up. Her hair was a tangled disaster and her eyes were puffy and red. She grabbed her phone, needing to talk to someone, anyone, to stop the walls from closing in on her.
But Sierra was too far away. Calling her would only make her worry, and there was nothing she could actually do to help.
Aubrey couldn’t think of any other friends in New Haven City, and her family was gone. She scrolled through her contacts for a ong time, desperate for someone to talk to, before finally dialing Tracy’s number.
Tracy picked up, her voice sweet and bubbly. “Aubrey! Calling so late–did you miss me?”
Hearing Tracy’s voice made the tears Aubrey had just managed to stop come pouring out again. “Tracy,” she sobbed. Your brother… he wants to break up.”
Tracy’s tone turned serious instantly. “Aubrey, don’t joke like that. It’s not funny.”
Aubrey pulled her legs up, tucking her face against her knees. Her voice broke as she cried. “It’s real. He just told me. I never hought he’d be such a jerk. He…”
Hearing her sob, Tracy panicked and cut her off. “Aubrey, listen to me. You just got your depression under control. Please, don’t
ry.”
Okay,” Aubrey whispered. She nodded through the tears, trying to swallow the sound of her sobbing.
Don’t cry, and don’t be sad. I’m coming over right now.” Tracy’s voice was rushed and tense. She hung up immediately.
Outside, the snow was falling harder and harder.
Aubrey washed her face, pulled on a coat, and went to the living room to wait for Tracy.
Her own family was gone, but she never expected her in–laws to be the ones she could actually lean on.
Half an hour later, Tracy arrived, her parents right behind her.
The three of them rushed inside, looking frantic and worried.
Victoria’s eyes were full of concern. She grabbed Aubrey’s hands and cupped her face, looking at her red, swollen eyes with the tenderness of a mother. “Oh, sweetheart, look at you,” she whispered. “This has to be a misunderstanding. Damon would never break up with you. I’m here now. I won’t let him treat you like this.”
Tracy stood with her hands on her hips, fuming. “What the hell is Damon thinking? Why the sudden breakup talk?”
Chase looked serious, though his voice was laced with worry. “Aubrey, did you and Damon have a fight?”
Aubrey shook her head, looking miserable. “No. We didn’t fight.”

Chase sat on the sofa, his anger barely contained. He was so obsessed back then. No one could tell him anything, he would have done anything to be with you. And now? It hasn’t even been that long, and he’s trying to end things
Victoria held Aubrey’s hand tightly as she led her over to the sofa to sit down.
They had barely sat down when two more people hurried through the door.
Zach and Olivia rushed in, looking just as frantic as the others,
What happened?” Zach’s voice was stern, his expression grim. “Damon broke up with Aubrey?
Olivia bypassed Zach and went straight to Aubrey, her eyes full of concern. “Aubrey, are you okay?
Aubrey hadn’t expected Zach and Olivia to show up too. She forced a weak, bitter smile. T’m fine. Olivia, you’re here too? Please,
it.”
ade went to get him,” Victoria said, her voice heavy. “Let’s wait for Damon to come out and explain. Let’s not jump to conclusions
ret.”
Olivia sat on the sofa opposite Aubrey.
Zach sat down right next to Olivia. She immediately stiffened and shifted away, putting distance between them.
His eyes darkened with a look of helplessness. He glanced at her before turning back to his mother. “Mom, do you think Damon har ome terminal illness? Maybe he’s breaking up with Aubrey because he doesn’t want to drag her down with him?”
Chase and Victoria’s faces fell instantly. Panic flashed in their eyes as they exchanged a look. To them, that theory suddenly felt all oo possible.
That can’t be true… right?” Victoria turned deathly pale, her voice trembling.
Aubrey felt her own heart tighten with a sudden surge of fear.
Why was everyone so quick to assume Damon was dying rather than believe he actually wanted to break up?
Chase looked tense. He cleared his throat. “Stop guessing. Just wait for Damon to get out here.”
A moment later, Tracy dragged Damon by the arm into the living room.
Damon froze. He looked at his entire family gathered there, completely blindsided.
The air in the room was thick with tension. Everyone’s eyes were locked on him, except for Aubrey’s.
Tracy shoved him down onto the sofa directly across from Aubrey, right next to Zach.
What are you all doing here?” Damon’s eyes swept the room before finally landing on Aubrey. Her eyes were red and swollen, like he’d been crying for hours. He went stiff.
His gaze stayed glued to her eyes. He couldn’t look away.
Tracy stood over him, hands on her hips, fuming. “Damon, what the hell is going on? Aubrey called me crying. She said you’re >reaking up with her?”
Damon still didn’t look away from Aubrey. She kept her head down, looking miserable and hurt. With her red eyes and messy hair, she looked absolutely heartbroken.
He couldn’t believe it. She’d lost her memory, but her acting skills had reached a whole new level.
She’d even managed to make her eyes look puffy and red, like she’d been crying her heart out. Why the hell did she call the whole family over?

Did she want him to be the villain? Was this all so she could walk away without a shred of guilt?
If it made her feel better, he didn’t care. After all, she wanted the marriage, but she also wanted her freedom.
“Damon,” Chase Blackwood said, his voice stern. “What’s this about you breaking up with Aubrey? Are you sick?

Damon let out a long sigh, looking over at his father. “I’m not sick. We just had our physicals at the office last month. I’m in perfect
