Chapter 233: Damon Begs for Forgiveness
Damon went silent.
The air in the room grew heavy, thick with a tension that made it hard to breathe. There was a wall between them now–jagged and uncomfortable. Neither of them knew how to move past it.
The silence was suffocating. “Is there anything else?” Aubrey whispered. “If not, you should go. I need to rest.”
Damon let out a long, jagged breath. He pushed himself up, his hands bracing against his thighs before he stood. He headed for the door, his movements heavy and reluctant.
His hand wrapped around the doorknob and froze. He stood there for a few seconds, his back tense. Then, he turned to look at Aubrey one last time.
Aubrey was watching his back when their eyes locked. For a split second, the air between them sizzled with heat and a desperate kind of longing. Damon spoke, his voice dropping to a tender whisper. “Bree, call me when you want to come home. I’ll pick you up.”
She looked away immediately, staring at the floor. “No need. I’ll just grab an Uber.”
Damon’s energy grew heavy. His gaze was dark, filled with a growing sense of helplessness. He gave a small nod. “Okay. Just come home soon. I miss you.”
There was a hint of grief in his voice. Aubrey froze for a second, caught off guard.
Without another word, Damon opened the door and stepped out, clicking it shut softly behind him.
His words echoed in her mind: “I miss you. It felt like a feather drifting across her heart, stirring up a wave of emotion. Her heart skipped a beat, and the pulse in her wrist began to thrum with a dull ache.
She couldn’t figure him out anymore.
Did he want to break up, or did he want to stay together? Did he stop caring, or was it the kind of “I miss you” that meant he still
loved her?
She pulled a pillow to her chest and slumped against the arm of the sofa, sinking deep into her own thoughts.
The room went dead silent, so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Aubrey’s head was spinning with images of Damon–his face, his voice, the way he looked at her. Random fragments of their college days flashed through her mind, jagged pieces of a past that felt like it belonged to someone else.
It seemed like every time she was down, the past came rushing back. Negative thoughts would just take over her mind.
She knew this wasn’t a good sign.
Evening rolled around.
The maid knocked on the door, calling her for dinner.
She stepped out of her room. As she hit the living room, a flicker of surprise caught her off guard, but she masked it instantly.
Chase, Victoria, and Tracy were all at the dining table. Damon was there, too.
I thought he’d left already. I didn’t expect him to stay for dinner.
Chase sat at the head of the long table. Victoria and Tracy were on the left, and Damon was on the right. There was an empty chair next to him, clearly meant for her.
She hesitated.
Aubrey, come eat,” Tracy called out.
Victoria gestured toward the seat next to Damon. “Aubrey, come sit. Let’s eat.”

Aubrey nodded. She greeted Chase and Victoria, then took her seat beside Damon.

Victoria Stone watched Damon and Aubrey sit together, a soft smile playing on her lips. Her eyes were full of quiet relief.
“Let’s eat,” Chase Blackwood said, reaching for a dish.
Everyone followed suit.
Aubrey always started with the soup. She picked up her spoon, taking slow, quiet sips of the warm broth.
Damon moved by pure instinct. He picked out the tender fish belly fillet–her favorite part–and dropped it onto her plate. Then he grabbed both chicken wings and gave them to her.
He even remembered the stir–fried asparagus tips. He knew she loved the greens but hated the bacon and scallions, so he meticulously picked them off before serving her.
Aubrey stole a glance at him. He was so focused on taking care of her that he hadn’t even touched his own food.
Her heart twisted with a strange, conflicting warmth. She couldn’t help but wonder–was any of this real? Was he actually being
sincere?
If he truly cared, why wouldn’t he marry her?
Was he just afraid of commitment? Or did he think she wasn’t good enough for him?
Tracy watched them from across the table, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. “Damon, Aubrey has hands,” she teased. “She can feed herself. Eat your own food.”
Damon shot her a look. “You talk too much.”
Tracy pouted, pretending to be annoyed. “I like chicken wings too, you know.”
Damon dropped a wing tip into her bowl. Tracy froze. “There’s no meat on the tip.”
Damon didn’t say a word as he dropped the second wing tip in front of her. “Then chew on the bones.”
Tracy puffed out her cheeks, looking at Aubrey with her best puppy–dog eyes. “Aubrey, look at him. He’s bullying me!”
Aubrey laughed at the girl’s antics. She took the plate of chicken wings and fish belly fillet that Damon had just prepared for her and pushed it toward Tracy. “Here, Tracy,” she said softly. “You take this one.”
“Thanks, Aubrey!” Tracy beamed. She turned to Damon and wrinkled her nose, making a face to provoke him before triumphantly taking a bite of a wing.
Damon let out a helpless sigh, but a faint smile played on his lips. He shook his head and went back to his greens.
The table fell into a comfortable silence as everyone continued their meal.
Chase suddenly spoke up. “Damon, I noticed your tires were flat when I pulled in. What happened?”
Damon arched an eyebrow and shot a look at Tracy, who was stifling a giggle. “Ask your precious daughter. This was her
handiwork.”
Victoria looked surprised, Chase turned to Tracy, confused. “Tracy? Why on earth did you slash your brother’s tires?”
Tracy slammed her fork down, her expression full of righteous fury. She leaned forward, hands flat on the table, her spine stiff. She sounded like a judge delivering a verdict. “Damon was being a jerk. He bullied Aubrey, and he deserved to be punished. Tires are easy to fix, but a broken heart? That’s a lot harder to mend. I couldn’t just stand by and watch, so I decided to teach him a little lesson.”
Chase clicked his tongue, shaking his head. He was at a loss for words.
Victoria chuckled. “You and your temper. Now that you’ve wrecked his car, how is he supposed to get home tonight?”
“Then he doesn’t,” Tracy said, picking her fork back up. She shot a quick, knowing glance at Aubrey. “It’s not like he doesn’t have a

Aubrey kept her head down, focusing on her food. But as she listened to them talk, her heart wouldn’t stop racing.
Tracy clearly had an ulterior motive. It was obvious to everyone, and Aubrey could see right through it.
50, Damon wasn’t actually mad. He just let Tracy get away with her little stunts without saying a word.
Seeing how quiet Aubrey was, Tracy leaned in, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. “So, Aubrey? Did my big brother apologize? Did he try to make it up to you? Is he begging for forgiveness yet? Did he take back all those things he said?”
Aubrey froze, her bowl halfway to her mouth. She looked up, caught off guard.
Even Chase and Victoria stopped eating. They put down their utensils and stared at her, their eyes bright with expectation. Everyone was waiting for her answer.
It seemed like this was the only thing anyone cared about.
She couldn’t stay silent any longer.
But Damon didn’t admit he was wrong. He didn’t try to comfort her, and he didn’t beg for her forgiveness. Instead, he just took back what he’d said and stopped bringing up the breakup altogether.
Just as she was standing there, unsure of what to do, Damon suddenly turned to look at her. Right in front of the whole family, his
voice was sincere.
Tracy and Victoria beamed, their eyes full of excitement. Chase kept a stern expression but waved a hand to play the peacemaker. “Lovers‘ quarrels are quickly mended,” he said. “Just forgive him and let the man eat.”
Aubrey felt beyond awkward. She couldn’t even process what was happening, so she just went along with Chase’s request and gave a small nod. “Okay…”
