Chapter 232: A Love That Can’t Be Hidden
The atmosphere felt thick and heavy. Aubrey was sure Damon was here to kick her out, and she wasn’t ready to face that. She kicked off the blanket, slid into her shoes, and looked at Tracy. “Tracy, I’m heading to my room. You keep playing.”
“Don’t you dare,” Tracy said, pinning Aubrey’s leg down. She leaned in close, whispering in her ear, “He’s obviously here to see you. Don’t go hiding in your room now.”
That only made Aubrey want to avoid him more.
If Damon was looking for her, it was probably to end things for good.
After all, without a marriage certificate to bind them, their relationship could end the moment one of them decided it was over.
Aubrey gently pushed Tracy’s hand away and made an excuse. “I’m just tired. I want to go lie down for a bit.”
Tracy let out a helpless sigh.
Aubrey stood up and walked away in her fluffy slippers. She didn’t give Damon so much as a glance as she headed straight for her
room.
Tracy watched her go, then turned her gaze back to Damon, feeling stuck in the middle of their tension.
She noticed her brother’s gaze. It was fixed on Aubrey, heavy with a longing he couldn’t quite hide, even as his face remained dark and guarded.
Tracy ditched her game. She tossed her phone aside and sat up, her face dead serious. “Damon, stop lying to yourself. You’re still head over heels for her. Your eyes give you away every time. So why? Why the hell did you break up with her?”
Damon pulled his gaze back to Tracy. His voice was thick with worry. “How has she been the last few days?”
“Terrible. She isn’t eating, she isn’t drinking, and she’s miserable. Can’t you see how much weight she’s lost?” Tracy snapped, her irritation peaking.
Damon rubbed his forehead, looking genuinely lost for a moment. “Why is she so unhappy?”
Tracy jumped up, grabbed a throw pillow, and hurled it at him. “Are you serious? You dumped her! How the hell is she supposed to feel? Happy?”
Damon caught the pillow mid–air with one hand.
Tracy gave him a sharp glare and spat out one last warning. “If you don’t go in there and fix this right now, you’re going to regret it.”
Inside the room.
Aubrey sank into the armchair and curled up, hugging a small pillow tight against her chest. She rested her head against the armrest, her gaze hollow as she stared out the window at the gray, gloomy sky.
If Damon was dead set on ending things, she wasn’t going to play along and be his “sister,” much less Victoria’s “daughter.” That was absurd and totally unrealistic.
She’d only said those things because she was angry.
The truth was, she couldn’t let him go. She stayed because she was still holding out hope that they could fix this.
After all, she hadn’t officially agreed to the breakup yet.
A knock at the door broke her train of thought.
Aubrey looked over. Three taps, then silence.
Assuming it was Tracy, she called out, “Come in.”
The door opened. It was Damon.

He shut the door behind him. His tall, powerful frame felt like an invisible weight in the room. Her heart skipped a beat, and she sat up straight, her eyes darting away in a panic.
Damon sat down next to her. The loveseat was small, and when he spread his long legs slightly, his thigh brushed against hers.
Just that tiny touch sent Aubrey’s mind into a tailspin. She clutched her pillow tighter and scooted toward the corner, turning her head to stare out the window.
“Bree, let’s talk,” Damon said softly.
Aubrey turned away, giving him the back of her head. She leaned against the sofa cushion and stared out the window, her eyes vacant and hollow. “Talk about what?” she asked tonelessly.
“Why didn’t you leave?” he asked.
Aubrey let out a bitter laugh. “I haven’t agreed to the breakup yet. Why would I leave?”
“What else do you want?”
Aubrey lowered her head and stayed silent, her heart aching with a sharp, bitter sting.
His voice was soft, almost a whisper. “I already bought you the house and the car. Take as much money as you want; just leave me a little to get by. And all that jewelry my grandfather and I gave you? Take it all.”
Aubrey’s chest tightened as if a massive weight were crushing her. She could barely breathe. Her eyes snapped red, and she whipped around to glare at him. “Damon, is this about Serena? Are you in love with her?”
“There is no other woman,” Damon said, dropping his head. His voice was heavy with exhaustion. “I’m the one pulling the plug. Isn’t this exactly what you wanted?”
Tears welled in Aubrey’s eyes, but she forced a cold, mocking laugh. “What, are you in my head now? How would you have any idea what I want?”
Damon turned to her, his gaze locking onto her tear–filled eyes. A faint, bittersweet smile touched his lips. “The texts you sent, the way you’re acting like you don’t want to leave, even how miserable you look right now… it’s all giving me this illusion. It makes me feel like you don’t actually want to break up.”
Aubrey didn’t hold back. “You’re right,” she said. “I don’t want to break up.”
“Are you just using me as a placeholder?”
“So that’s what you think of me, Damon?” A sharp pain shot through Aubrey’s chest. She choked back her tears, her composure finally breaking. Clenching her fists, she forced out every word. “When did I ever use you as a placeholder? In what’s left of my memory, you’re the only man I’ve ever been with. So who exactly am I ‘trading up‘ for?”
Damon’s hands were balled into tight fists. He looked calm, but his heart was pounding with a dull, heavy ache. “Didn’t you say you wanted to be married by thirty?” he asked, his voice thick and hoarse.
“Marriage?” Aubrey let out a cold, bitter laugh. She slumped back against the sofa, her body feeling heavy and drained. She stared down at the throw pillow in her lap, her chest tightening with a sharp ache. Tears finally spilled over, tracing silent paths down her
cheeks.
Things had gotten so bad they were on the verge of a breakup. Why the hell was he even bringing up marriage? She had clearly overestimated how much Damon actually cared about her. At this point, just finding a way not to lose him was a miracle. She didn’t dare let herself dream of a wedding anymore.
‘I don’t want to get married anymore,” Aubrey said, turning her head away. She kept her back to him, propping her face up with one hand while she secretly wiped the cold tears from her cheeks.
Damon let out a long breath, sounding relieved. “You changed your mind?”
Yeah

“Then come home with me.”
Those words only made Aubrey’s heart ache more.

She felt like a piece of driftwood. Wherever the wind blew, she followed. Wherever she landed was home.
