Maxwell shoved a hand into his pocket, standing shoulder–to–shoulder with Damon. His eyes were fixed on a certain figure in the crowd. “You have a girlfriend,” he said flatly. “That’s a win. Stop complaining.”
Damon glanced toward the house, waiting for Aubrey to come out of the restroom. He sighed, a soft smile playing on his lips. “Fair point. I guess I should count my blessings.”
Maxwell’s eyes darkened, but he stayed silent.
How’s the company doing after the IPO?” Damon asked. “Performance still solid?”
“It’s good,” Maxwell replied. “Steady growth. I won’t let you down, shareholder.”
“You’ve always been sharp. I never worried about my investment,” Damon said, glancing at him. “But you’re pushing thirty, man. You’ve spent the last few years buried in work, and your personal life has taken a backseat. Now that the company is stable, don’t you think it’s time to settle down?”
Maxwell looked down at the grass, giving a non–committal shrug. “Maybe. We’ll see.”
Suddenly–Bang!*
Colored smoke erupted into the air. Every head turned to watch the vibrant colors bloom across the sky.
Tracy bounced onto the stage like a wood nymph, clutching the hem of her dress. She was all smiles, looking radiant and full of life.
She grabbed the mic and addressed the crowd. “Thanks for joining our confession party, everyone! Come closer to the stage. I have a major announcement to make!”
Maxwell’s expression soured. He turned to leave, throwing out a cold, “I’m out of here.”
Damon grabbed his arm. “Where do you think you’re going? The stage is that way.”
“Don’t bother me with these pointless parties again. I’m busy,” Maxwell snapped, his voice dripping with annoyance.
“You’re already here. Stay for the finale,” Damon said, pulling him toward the stage.
Maxwell followed, though he looked like he’d rather be anywhere else.
Near the front, Skylar sidled up to Damon. “Damon, where’s your girlfriend?”
Damon cleared his throat, keeping his eyes on the stage. “She went to the restroom.”
“Oh.” Skylar leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper. “I heard this is a confession party. Who’s making a move on who?”
“The star is right there on stage. Just watch.” Damon stepped away, putting some distance between himself and Skylar. He started scanning the crowd, asking family members if they’d seen Aubrey.
Everyone said no. He was about to head into the house when Tracy shouted from the stage, “Damon! Where are you going?”
Damon called back, “Looking for your sister–in–law!”
Tracy Blackwood rushed down from the stage, grabbed his arm, and dragged him toward the steps. “Big brother, do me a favor,” she urged. “Get up there and back me up!”
“Why the hell do you need me for a confession?” Damon asked, his brow furrowed in a deep scowl.
By the time Tracy hauled him to the center of the stage, the crowd had finally snapped out of their shock. The Blackwoods were especially hyped, their eyes glued to the stage, eager to see what would happen next.
Without another word, Tracy turned and bolted back down.
Damon stood alone on the stage, looking completely lost. He watched Tracy suddenly dash down to stand with his brother and sister–in–law.
Leo was completely baffled. He was just about to walk off the stage when Aubrey Hayes suddenly stepped out from behind the screen.
Aubrey wore a long white dress and high heels. She looked stunning–flawless and drop–dead gorgeous. She walked straight toward Damon, holding a small black box in her hand.
Damon still hadn’t processed what was happening. He instinctively grabbed her wrist, his voice full of worry. “What took you so long in the bathroom? Is your stomach acting up?”
Aubrey smiled, her eyes bright and glistening as she looked at him with deep affection. “I’m fine, Damon. But I have a request. Can you promise to say yes?”
Damon’s heart skipped a beat. He realized something was up. “What request?”
Aubrey’s eyes shimmered with tears. Her voice carried the weight of over ten years of longing and hope. All the bitterness of the past dissolved into this one moment, her voice trembling but certain. “Damon, will you marry me?”

The sudden shock hit Damon like a freight train. His eyes went red instantly. One hand gripped the ring box in his pocket–the one he’d been carrying around for two months, never finding the right moment to give it to her. His other hand shook violently, his fingers curling into a tight, emotional fist.
He couldn’t believe it. It felt like a dream. A faint, disbelieving smile touched his lips as tears finally spilled over. There was a massive lump in his throat, making his voice thick and raspy. “Bree, I’m not dreaming, am I? You’re… you’re proposing to me? All of this was set up for me?”
Aubrey shook her head, her smile radiant despite the tears. “It’s not a dream. I’m proposing to you. Before I met you at eighteen, I thought love was always selfish. I thought it was something you calculated, something where you only gave to get something back. But after being with you, I realized that some families are actually warm. I learned that some people love selflessly. You’re so good to me, Damon–so good that when I left you and your family, the pain was so bad I fell into a depression. I didn’t even have the courage to keep living.”
“I’ve struggled so hard to get this far. I know now that I need to be braver–to grab onto this happiness and never let go. I want to be your wife, Damon. I want to be the person who wakes up next to you every single day, supporting you and staying by your side through everything.”
“Damon, I want to be your wife. Legally. I’ve dreamed about this from the time I was eighteen until now, at thirty. Every time I saw a wedding, I thought of you, and I couldn’t help but cry.” Aubrey’s eyes shimmered with tears, her voice thick with emotion. “I brought everything–my ID, all the papers. I even booked an appointment at the Marriage Bureau for two o’clock this afternoon. I’ve hurt you so many times in the past that I was terrified you’d turn me down. That’s why I called your family and friends here–to back me up. If you say no today, I’ll just have to play dirty and guilt–trip you until you agree to go to the courthouse and sign those papers with me.”
Damon’s eyes were red, and the tears finally broke free, streaming down his handsome face. He couldn’t stop them. He looked at her with a smile that was both tender and incredibly doting, his heart practically bursting with pure, unadulterated joy.
The audience was dead silent. Everyone was on edge. They knew the answer should be a “yes,” but they still watched Damon with bated breath, praying nothing would go wrong at the last second.
So many couples in love miss their window to make it official. Once that moment passes, it’s often gone forever. Sometimes, the spark just fades, and the chance to say “I do” vanishes into thin air.
Aubrey picked up the ring box and flipped it open. Her voice was trembling, thick with tears. “I even bought the ring. Damon… will you marry me?”
Damon tilted his head back, looking toward the stage screen as he tried to surreptitiously wipe his eyes. He wasn’t avoiding her he just couldn’t get the words out. A lump was wedged in his throat, and his heart was hammering so hard against his ribs he couldn’t catch his breath.
