Damon scrambled to his feet and slid the ring onto her finger.

Aubrey stared at it. Her heart skipped a beat. It was the same onethe ring from his very first proposal. When they broke up after college, she had given it back to him.

She never thought it would find its way back to her finger. It was as if his love had never wavered, not even for a second.

While she was staring at the ring, Damon held out his own hand. What about mine?

Aubrey snapped out of it. She quickly grabbed the ring from her box and carefully slid it onto his finger.

It was a perfect fit. Damon couldn’t take his eyes off it.

The crowd erupted again. Applause and cheers filled the air.

The moment she slid the ring onto his finger, Damon pulled her into a tight embrace. He buried his face in her hair, kissing the top of her head. Let’s go to the courthouse and get the license right now,he whispered urgently. I can’t wait until two.

We can’t,Aubrey whispered back, leaning into him. We can’t just ditch our family and friends. Besides, there’s a whole lunch waiting for us.

Damon pulled back slightly, cupping her face in his hands. His thumbs gently wiped away the tear tracks on her cheeks. Bree,he murmured, his voice dropping an octave. Can I kiss you?

Aubrey felt her face flush. She looked around shyly and whispered, No, not here. Everyone is watching. It’s embarrassing. Wait until we’re home.

Damon’s eyes crinkled as a brilliant smile broke across his face. He looked at her with pure, unadulterated devotion and stroked her cheek. Alright. Whatever you want.

He took her hand, interlacing their fingers, and led her off the stage.

Their family and friends swarmed them instantly. A flood of congratulations and wellwishes poured in from every direction, nearly overwhelming them.

Tracy was still pouting, her eyes welling up so much that her makeup was about to be ruined.

Aubrey reached out and touched her cheek, feeling a pang of sympathy. Tracy, why are you crying again?

I’m just so happy!Tracy sniffled, her voice thick with emotion. I’ve watched you two through everything. It’s been such a long road. Seeing you finally get marriedI just can’t stop the tears.

Aubrey let go of Damon’s hand and walked over to Tracy, pulling her into a hug.

Even though Tracy was her husband’s sister, she was more like a best frienda true soulmate.

Despite their fiveyear age gap, Aubrey really loved her.

Sierra came over to offer her congratulations as well.

With Olivia joining the group, the four women started chatting away. Damon was left standing there, completely sidelined. There wasn’t even a gap for him to squeeze back into the conversation.

Once the buffet lunch was served

Grandpa and the parents sat at a nearby table, happily eating lunch. They looked over at the younger crowd with beaming smiles, lost in their own conversation.

Zach was close with Damon’s circle too, so he was already deep in conversation with the guys.

Skylar, however, was the odd one out. She stood there alone, looking like she didn’t belong. There was no place for her in this circle.

Damon headed over to join his friends.

As he approached, Rhett was the first to speak. Congrats, Damon. Wishing you two a long and happy life together. Can’t wait for you guys to start a family.

Damon was beaming, looking like he was on top of the world. Thanks,he said, raising his glass of juice to toast with everyone.

Rhett grabbed his wrist. Juice? Seriously? It’s such a big day. You should at least have a real drink!

Not today,Damon said.

Wow, what a buzzkill.

Tracy Blackwood walked over and hooked her arm through Damon’s. Her eyes were clear and bright, a hint of shyness in her voice. Rhett, Damon has to drive his wife to the Civil Affairs Office later. He can’t drink.

I’ll drive you,Rhett Montgomery said, shoving a glass of red wine into Damon’s hand and snatching away his juice.

Tracy beamed, grabbing the wine glass from Damon. Rhett, I’ll drink with you instead.

She raised her glass, offering a toast.

Rhett gave a casual smile and clinked his glass against hers. Alright, then. I’ll drink with you. To your brother and sisterinlawhappy wedding.

I’ll thank you on their behalf,Tracy said. She tilted her head back and downed the wine in one go.

Nearby, Maxwell Holland kept his heavy gaze locked on Tracy. His Adam’s apple bobbed. He looked away toward the plants lining the garden, calmly raising his glass to finish his drink.

Skylar saw Damon and sauntered over. She gave her long, wavy hair a toss and stood in a sultry pose, wine glass in hand. A fake, practiced smile played on her lips. Congratulations, Damon. You finally got what you wantedmarrying the woman you love most.

Out of politeness and for Alex’s sake, Damon tapped his juice glass against Skylar’s. Thanks.

Skylar tilted her head back and took an elegant sip of her wine.

Rhett’s gaze lingered on Skylar. She was wearing an offtheshoulder gown that put her pale shoulders on full display. Her enhanced chest was spilling out of the dress, paired with a tiny waist and wide hips. Her makeup was heavy and provocative.

Every move she made gave off a certain vibethe kind of woman who would be wild and filthy in bed, completely untamable.

As a photographer, Rhett loved shooting women like Skylar. They knew exactly how to work the camera and strike the most seductive poses.

Tracy noticed the way Rhett was looking at Skylar. Her smile froze. Clutching her drink, she turned and walked away, heading back toward Aubrey and her other sisterinlaw.

What’s wrong?Aubrey asked, catching the change in Tracy’s expression. She sounded worried.

Tracy forced a stiff smile and shook her head. Nothing.

Aubrey could tell the smile was fake. She narrowed her eyes and looked over at the group of men.

Skylar was there, too, chatting away with Rhett. She hadn’t changed a bitstill desperate to claw her way into Damon’s inner circle and meet all his friends. She used her brother’s friendship with Damon as a free pass to barge in whenever she wanted, never once acting like she didn’t belong.

Just as Aubrey was about to look away, she noticed a man staring intensely toward them. He didn’t seem interested in the conversation the were having at all.

Aubrey followed his gaze. It landed straight on Tracy.

guys

Her intuition was never wrong. When she looked back at the man, he seemed to sense her eyes on him. He immediately averted his gaze and tilted his head back to take a long drink.

Aubrey gave Tracy’s arm a gentle nudge. Tracy, who’s that guy?

Tracy followed Aubrey’s gaze until she spotted Maxwell. Oh, he’s another one of my brother’s friends. His name is Maxwell Holland.

Are you two close?

Not really. Just acquaintances. He doesn’t smile much, and he’s not exactly a talker. He always looks so serious.
