Chapter 268: Getting Hitched
When a man can’t keep his eyes off a woman, it’s a dead giveaway.
Too bad Tracy thought he was just shooting daggers at her.
Aubrey’s voice turned serious. “Honestly? I don’t think Rhett is husband material.”

Sierra nodded in agreement, a wry smile on her face. “Speaking from experience–and one failed marriage–I have to agree. He’s not the guy you want to marry.”
Tracy looked completely confused. “Aubrey, you married my brother, and he’s the most sweet, caring man alive. Why are you telling me not to find someone like him? Rhett is just like my brother. He’s a total gentleman–kind, thoughtful, and always smiling. He’s just such a sweetheart. I think I’d be really happy with a guy like him.”
Aubrey sighed helplessly. “Tracy, let’s be real. Your brother is only sweet and attentive to me and the rest of the family. To everyone else, he’s an iceberg. He stays polite, but he keeps his distance. He doesn’t go around being ‘warm‘ to just anyone.”
Sierra jumped in immediately. “Aubrey is right. I’m her best friend, and Grant is still just ‘professionally polite‘ to me. I’ve never seen his ‘warm‘ side. A guy who’s sweet and attentive to every woman isn’t a ‘good guy‘–he’s a human space heater. Deep down, that’s just a player. True love is about favoritism, not being nice to everyone.”
Tracy went quiet, her heart feeling heavy. She turned her head to look at Rhett Montgomery, who was usually the life of the party.
He was currently deep in conversation with Skylar Evans, and they seemed to be having the time of their lives.
Tracy’s face fell, a sting of jealousy rising in her chest. She looked away and muttered under her breath, “Whatever. I just know I don’t want a man who’s a cold fish like my oldest brother.”
“You’ve got him all wrong,” Aubrey said, glancing at Olivia Summers. “Let’s ask her. Olivia, is your husband really a cold, emotionless robot at home, or is he actually sweet and attentive?”
Olivia froze for a second, a bashful, slightly awkward smile playing on her lips. “Wait, why are you putting me on the spot?”
Zach acts so cold on the surface,” Aubrey said. “Is he really that boring? You know, stiff and lifeless?”
A faint blush crept up Olivia’s cheeks. “Not at all. He’s actually very sweet. He has a great sense of humor, too.”
Tracy wasn’t buying it. “My big brother? He’s the definition of serious.”
He can be intense,” Olivia admitted. “But he’s just focused on the work. He doesn’t take it out on people.”
“I guess.” Tracy chewed her lip, thinking it over. “Damon isn’t scary at all, so I’ve always stuck to him. Zach… he just intimidates me. We aren’t that close, so I don’t really know what he’s like.”
Olivia’s gaze drifted toward Zach, who was standing with the other men. A hint of shyness flickered in her eyes, mixed with pure admiration.
The dinner finally wrapped up.
Everyone was full and happy as they headed their separate ways. Damon pulled the car around, Aubrey in the passenger seat. They were headed straight to the Civil Affairs Office.
They had snagged the first appointment after lunch, so there was no wait. From the moment they walked in to the second they stepped out with their marriage certificate, barely ten minutes had passed. It didn’t cost them a single $1.
It had taken them over ten long years to finally get this one piece of paper.
Standing in the warm sunlight outside the exit, Damon’s long fingers traced the photos inside the little red book. He stared at their names and information, side by side. His eyes welled up, the rims turning a bright, emotional red.
He had finally married the love of his life. His greatest wish was fulfilled. He had no regrets left.
He spun around and pulled her into a tight, emotional hug.
Aubrey froze, still clutching the marriage license. She looked up from his chest and whispered, “What’s wrong?”
“Wife,” Damon breathed. He took a deep breath, closing his eyes as he rested his forehead against hers.
It was the first time she had ever heard him call her that so naturally. A shy blush crept up her neck. “Yeah?”
“Wife.” He said it again. Every syllable, every breath, seemed to carry the weight of the intense love he’d been suppressing for years.
“I’m here.”
“Wife… My wife…”
Aubrey let out a soft laugh. “Why do you keep saying it?”

“Because you’re officially mine now. You’re really my wife.”
“You still can’t just repeat it forever.”
“Wife!”
“Yes?”
“Mrs. Blackwood,” he whispered, his voice low and teasing. “Let me hear you say it…”
Aubrey felt her heart race. Her voice was soft, shy, and barely a whisper. “Husband.”
That one word–husband–sent a surge of pure electricity straight through him.
Overcome with emotion, he didn’t wait. He tilted her head back and crashed his lips onto hers.

They were right outside the courthouse, and the sidewalk was packed. It probably wasn’t the best move for the crowd’s mood–after all, half the people there were getting married, but the other half were walking out with divorce papers.
Aubrey quickly pushed him away, whispering urgently, “Damon! Not in public!”
He gave her a doting smile and gently took the marriage license from her hand. “Fine. From now on, you handle the money, and I’ll keep the marriage license.”
“Wait-” She reached for the marriage license, but before she could grab it, Damon swept her off her feet. Aubrey gasped, her arms instinctively flying around his neck to steady herself. “What are you doing?”
Damon didn’t say a word, just carried her in his arms as he strode toward the car.
He tucked her into the passenger seat and clicked the seatbelt into place. Before pulling away, he leaned in and pressed a lingering kiss to her lips. His eyes burned with intensity as he whispered, “Aubrey, today is my birthday, the anniversary of our proposal, and now our wedding day. Thank you for giving me the best gift I’ve ever received. I’ll never forget this for as long as I live.”
Aubrey reached up, cupping his cheek. Her eyes were soft, brimming with love. “As long as you’re happy, Damon,” she murmured.
“We’re married now,” he said, his voice dropping an octave, thick with intent. “And I’m not skipping the wedding night. Let’s go home.”
Aubrey blushed, her voice shy. “It’s the middle of the day. Can’t you at least wait until tonight?”
Damon gave a low chuckle. “Not a chance.”
He slammed the passenger door shut, rounded the car, and slid into the driver’s seat. Seconds later, the engine roared to life, and they sped
away.
Aubrey bit her lip, a small smile playing on her face as she gazed out the window.
The city blurred past them in a series of flashes. Bright sunlight washed over the streets, making the bustling landscape look vibrant and full of life.
For the first time, the restlessness in her heart was gone. The dust had finally settled. She had a home, she had a husband, and she had her children. Everything was exactly where it was meant to be.

er haunted by panic and fear.
It was the reason she hadn’t told Damon she was over two months pregnant. She hadn’t a soul.
The baby had been conceived back in Crestview City, during that one time they didn’t use a condom. She was terrified of anyone finding out. She feared her cousin’s retaliation, Hannah’s bitterness, and Veronica’s twisted mind. She was even scared that the girls who were obsessed with Damon would do something to hurt her baby.
She lived in a state of constant panic.
Every time Damon wanted to have sex, she’d tell him to be gentle.
Damon always respected her feelings.
