Do You Still Love Me When We Meet Again? (Aubrey and Damon) novel Chapter 270

Chapter 270: The Baby Is Coming 2

The doctor stepped out of the exam room. Damon shot up and rushed over. Doctor, is my wife okay?

She’s fine,the doctor said. Don’t worry.

And the baby?Damon’s voice trembled. What about the baby?

Menu

The baby is stable for now. Everything looks okay. It seems like your wife just ate something bad. She has a stomach bugnausea and diarrhea. Since severe gastroenteritis can sometimes trigger a miscarriage, we’re admitting her for observation and treatment.

The knot in Damon’s throat finally loosened, but only a little. He was still on edge. He knew that if the stomach flu got too bad, it could still put the baby in danger.

Thank you, Doctor.Damon nodded. Can I go in and see her?

Yes, go ahead.

Thanks.”

He didn’t waste another second and hurried inside.

The lights were dim. Aubrey was curled on her side in the hospital bed. A basin sat on the floor next to her, messy with vomit.

She looked completely drained, her eyes closed as she tried to rest.

Damon walked into the room and immediately grabbed the basin she’d been sick in. He took it to the bathroom, rinsed it out, and brought it back, setting the plastic bin right by her bedside.

Damon went back to the bathroom and grabbed a clean towel. He soaked it in warm water, wrung it out, and walked back to the bedside. He pulled up a chair and sat down, gently wiping Aubrey’s face.

The warmth of the towel woke her. Aubrey opened her eyes and looked at him.

Damon didn’t say a word. His eyes were bloodshot, his expression dark and heavy. After he finished wiping her face, he took her hand and gently cleaned it, too.

Babeshe whispered.

I’m here,Damon replied, his voice low and thick. He kept his head bowed, his eyes burning even redder.

Aubrey saw how shaken Damon was. His face was pale, his expression dark and heavy. Guilt crushed her. I’m sorry, she whispered. Damon’s voice was raw, his hands still trembling. Three months, Aubrey. You kept this from me for three months. Do you really not trust me to keep my own child safe?

The more people know, the more dangerous it gets. I was just scared. The memory of her first baby tore through her, a sharp, familiar ache: Her eyes welled up, her voice breaking. I didn’t mean to lie to you. I just wanted to keep the baby safe.

I know you were trying to protect the baby. I want to protect you both, too. But you didn’t tell me, and you never turned me away. What if I’d hurt the baby while we were having sex?The thought of their nonstop, intense intimacy over the past few months made his blood run cold. He set the towel on the nightstand and took her hand, rubbing it between his palms. He leaned over, kissing her fingers, his eyes red and brimming with tears as he looked at her. I’m so sorry, Aubrey. I was so damn careless. I didn’t even notice you were three months pregnant. It’s my fault. I didn’t protect our first child, and that’s why you didn’t trust me.

Aubrey shook her head, her lip trembling as she choked back a sob. No, Damon. You’ve been amazing. It’s justI’ve been so anxious. I was too scared, too terrified to tell anyone. I just wanted to hide my stomach, to keep it a secret from everyone. I thought about telling you, but I was afraid you’d get so excited and happy that you’d accidentally let it slip.

You remember everything, don’t you?he said, his voice dropping. You lied to me. You said you’d forgotten all the bad things.

I wanted to forget,Aubrey whispered, a bitter smile touching her lips. Two tears rolled down her cheeks and soaked into her pillow. But I can’t.

Damon reached out and wiped the tears from her eyes, his voice soft and soothing. Don’t cry. I know remembering everything is heavy, but you can’t let yourself spiral. We can’t let your depression flare up again.

Aubrey choked back a sob, her eyes brimming with tears. She bit her lip and gave a small nod.

Damon pressed her hand to his lips. Thank God it’s just a stomach bug. The baby is safe for now. But seriously, what did you even eat?

You were at work and I had the day off,Aubrey whispered, looking guilty. I was bored and the cravings just hit me. I had some crab, those pungent snacks, ice cream, durian, some spicy jerkyand then a full dinner

Damon let out a long, heavy sigh, rubbing his forehead in disbelief. Oh, man… Aubrey

Aubrey pouted, her bottom lip trembling.

Damon gently stroked her cheek, his voice dropping to a tender whisper. It’s okay, it’s okay. Don’t be upset. We’ll stay in the hospital for a couple of days. Once the stomach issues are cleared up, the baby will be fine. Justno more crazy eating like that, okay?

Aubrey nodded softly.

Menu

If you really want something, we’ll just do small portions,Damon whispered. We’ll space it outwait for one thing to digest before we move on to the next. And no more ordering DoorDash. If you’re craving something, just have the cook make it. If she doesn’t know how, tell me. I’ll learn. I’ll make it for you.

Aubrey’s vision blurred again just as her tears had started to dry. Every word he said hit her right in the heart. The guilt was overwhelming. She had kept so much from him, and here he was, taking all the blame on himself. It ate at her.

Her bottom lip trembled as she looked at him with watery eyes. I’m so sorry, Damon.

Damon leaned down, pulling her into a gentle hug and kissing her cheek. You didn’t do anything wrong, and I’m not mad at you. Just stay with me, okay? Keep your head up. We can’t let that depression come back.

Aubrey nodded hard.

Damon stroked her head, his fingers sliding through her hair. It’s the middle of the night. Go to sleep. I’ll stay right here and watch over you.

Aubrey patted the corner of the narrow hospital bed. Lie down with me, Damon.

I’m not tired yet,he promised. You go to sleep. Once you’re out, I’ll get some rest.

Aubrey nodded and let her eyes flutter shut.

Damon reached out, gently wiping the lingering tear tracks from her face.

She was exhausted from the vomiting and diarrhea. As soon as she closed her eyes, she drifted off.

The room fell silent.

Shadows played across Damon’s face, making his expression look dark and heavy.

He looked at the woman he loved. She was carrying his child, yet she’d chosen to hide it from him. She’d rather carry that weight alone than tell him a thing.

Maybe it wasn’t that she didn’t trust him.

She was just scared. Terrified and anxious.
