Chapter 271: Setting the Trap
At the luxury villa.
Zach drove through the gates and pulled up on the long driveway cutting through the garden.
Evan was already standing there, waiting. As Zach stepped out of the car, Evan narrowed his eyes in suspicion. “What are you doing
here?”
Zach slammed the car door shut and walked toward him. “Look, we’ve been brothers for over thirty years. I’m not Damon. I don’t hold a grudge against you. I just wanted to stop by and see how you were doing.”
Evan let out a cold laugh. He looked down and sighed, staying silent as he turned and headed into the house.
Zach followed right behind him.
Once they were inside, Evan asked, “What are you drinking?”
“You always were a collector of the good stuff. Every time I visited before, you’d offer me a drink and I’d turn you down. But today? Today, I want to see what you’ve got in your cellar.”
Evan just gave a small smile. He went to the wine cellar and brought back one of his finest reds. He opened it, let it breathe, and poured them each a glass. They sat on the sofa and clinked their glasses together.
Zach took a small sip and set his glass down. “Your parents are divorced now. You and Nina are divorced, too. It hurts to see your family torn apart like this. Honestly? I think Damon went too far.”
Evan looked surprised. “So you think he’s out of line too?”
“Completely. None of this would have happened if it wasn’t for him. He turned the whole family upside down just for some woman. He even talked Grandpa into spilling secrets he’d kept buried for thirty years. That’s exactly why we’re in this mess.”
“But he’s your brother…” Evan said, still struggling to believe that Zach was actually taking his side.
“Truth is, I’m jealous of him. He’s been the golden boy since we were kids, especially to Grandpa. Every good thing went to him. He had the grades, the personality, the silver tongue… he knew exactly how to make the whole family favor him. Even my own sister likes him best.”
Evan felt the same way. He leaned in and clinked his glass against Zach’s. “I get it. I’m honestly so done with the favoritism.”
Zach gave a knowing smile, clinked back, and took a drink.
They kept talking like they always did, but this time, it was all about trashing Damon. It hit Evan right where it hurt. The more they talked, the more bitter and pissed off he got.
Evan started venting every grievance he’d held onto for years.
As his father’s only child, he’d always been the golden boy at home. In Zach’s eyes, Evan already had it all–the love, the resources, and every advantage of being an only child.
But it was never enough. He was too jealous and too used to being the center of the universe. He’d grown selfish and entitled. Being spoiled by his parents wasn’t enough; he wanted that same special treatment from Grandpa, too.
He couldn’t stand seeing Damon being more loved or more successful than him.
He felt that as the eldest grandson, he was the one who deserved to be the favorite.
He’d spent his entire life resenting Damon for it.
Just as they were getting into the conversation, Zach’s phone buzzed. He pulled it out and answered right there in front of Evan.
“Yeah?”
Evan picked up his glass and took a long swig of red wine, listening to Zach’s side of the call.

“Is he really back? He actually crossed the border?”
“Is the intel solid? Good. Stay on him. Move in the second you have an opening. Don’t let him slip. Cracking my family’s hit–and–run case depends on this. I’ll owe you one.”
Evan’s face fell instantly.
Zach hung up and stood up, feigning urgency. “Evan…”
Evan snapped out of it, looking rattled. “Huh?”
“I have to go. Something came up.”
Evan stood up too, forcing a calm smile. “What’s the rush?”
“It’s the driver–the one who hit my mom, my wife, and my sister–in–law. He fled to Southeast Asia, but his father was
hospitalized the other day. I leaked a rumor that his dad died, and since he’s a devoted son, he fell for it hook, line, and sinker.“Zach talked as he headed for the door. “My guys have a lock on his location. They’re ready to bust him. I need to get moving.”
“Okay. Be careful out there.”
“Tll catch you later,” Zach said, rushing out the door.
Paniq seized Evan. His face turned ashen. He began pacing the living room, hands on his hips, his mind racing.
He heard the car pull away. The more he thought about it, the more he spiraled. Something felt horribly wrong.
Wasn’t that driver supposed to be dead? He was killed in Southeast Asia… wasn’t he?
The hitman had been clear. He’d buried the body deep in a mass grave in the middle of nowhere. It was never supposed to be found. But Evan couldn’t shake the feeling. Something was off.
He pulled out his phone and dialed the guy who did his dirty work.
“Is that driver dead or not?”
The man’s voice was firm. “Boss, he’s dead. I buried him myself. Six feet deep in a hole so deep even a ghost couldn’t crawl out.” “Then why the hell are the cops saying he made it back across the border?”
“How should I know? Maybe they got the wrong guy.”
“Is it possible *you* killed the wrong guy?”
“I…” The hitman hesitated.
Right then, Zach walked back through the door.
Evan’s face went ghost–white. Panic surged as he fumbled to hang up and delete his WhatsApp history.
But he was a second too late.
Zach lunged. Before Evan could even blink, a heavy boot slammed into his chest. The force was brutal, sending Evan flying backward. He hit the wall with a sickening thud. His phone clattered to the floor as he slumped against the wall and slid into a heap on the ground.
He clutched his chest, gasping for air. He was on his knees, the pain so intense he couldn’t even scream.
Zach calmly picked up the phone and opened the chat history.
He pulled our his own phone and hit a speed dial. “Damon, I’ve got the number. Write this down: 135-4000-5…
Now that he had the hitman’s number, Damon could track the guy’s location in seconds.
“You…” Evan looked up in disbelief, his eyes burning with the hatred of a cornered beast. He spat the words through gritted teeth.
