Chapter 272: Separate Beds
With that phone number in his possession, Damon basically had the world’s most precise GPS tracker.
He was an aerospace engineer. He mastered the most complex technology on the planet; tracing a simple signal was child’s play for
him.
He sent the live location data straight to Zach.
Zach headed out with his team immediately.
It took less than twenty–four hours for the good news to arrive.
[Got him]
Two simple words. Damon felt a massive weight lift off his chest. This entire sting operation had been a huge gamble. If they had missed the hitman, they would have tipped their hand. Evan would have taken his money and fled the country to live like a king, and they never would have caught him.
But he couldn’t wait any longer.
His wife was pregnant again. But after everything she’d been through, the trauma ran deep. Unless the killer was brought to justice, Aubrey would never truly feel safe.
Luckily, his brother had come through. The operation was a total success.
The rest was now in the hands of the police and the courts.
Aubrey spent two days in the hospital. Once she was cleared, she went home to rest.
Damon made her some light pork porridge and steamed vegetables.
He sat with her at the dining table, keeping her company while she ate.
Aubrey took a spoonful of the porridge and noticed his bowl was filled with the exact same thing.
“Babe, why are you eating this too?”
Damon took a bite and gave her a small smile. “It’s actually pretty good for a change.”
“You don’t have to accommodate me,” she said softly. “You can have something better. I promise I won’t get jealous.”
Damon let out a soft laugh. “For the rest of your pregnancy, and even after the baby is born, I’m eating whatever you’re eating. Well, as long as it isn’t black licorice or those bitter herbal meds.”
Aubrey’s eyes crinkled as she smiled, nodding happily.
Damon hesitated for a moment before adding, “By the way… Evan’s been caught.”
Aubrey’s eyes widened in shock. She lunged forward and gripped Damon’s arm, her voice trembling with excitement. “He was arrested? Was it for embezzlement? Or did they finally find the driver who hit us?”
“The driver died in Southeast Asia. He’s gone for good. But they caught the guy who killed him, and he has ties to Evan. They’re all in custody now.”
“What if the hitman doesn’t talk? What if he won’t say Evan was the mastermind?”
Damon didn’t even blink. “If he doesn’t roll on Evan, he’s looking at the death penalty. If he talks, he has a shot at staying alive.”
Aubrey shook her head. “I don’t think so. Even if he rolls on the mastermind, he’s still a killer. He has to pay for what he did.” “Don’t worry,” Damon said. “The detectives handling this are the best. They have their ways of making people talk.” “What kind of ways?”

“With guys like that, you make whatever promises or guarantees you need to get the truth. Whether you actually keep those promises later… that’s a different story. You follow?”
Aubrey got the hint. She nodded with a faint smile and went back to her porridge.

Knowing Evan was finally behind bars made the world feel a little lighter. It was the closure she needed–justice for the baby she’d
lost.
Later that afternoon.
A few delivery guys arrived at the house. They were hauling a twin–sized bed inside while Damon stood in the hallway, directing them toward the bedroom.
Aubrey was completely lost.
Once the movers were gone, Aubrey walked into the master bedroom. A twin–sized bed sat right against the wall.
Damon was busy smoothing out the sheets.
“Damon, what is this?” Aubrey asked, her voice
tight with annoyance as she walked over.
Damon was focused on the bed, missing the frustrated look on her face.
I’m sleeping here starting tonight,” he said. “You’re pregnant. Safety comes first.”
“We can still sleep together,” Aubrey countered. “It’s not like we haven’t been having sex this whole time. Besides, you’re always gentle. I’m three months along -the baby is stable. You don’t need to worry so much.”
now-
Damon finished with the mattress and stepped toward her. He cupped her pouting face in his hands and kissed her forehead. “Hey, listen to me,” he whispered affectionately. “We can’t take any risks. Sleeping apart is the safest way, and I can handle the self–control.”
Aubrey wrapped her fingers around his wrists. “Well, I can’t.”
Damon let out a soft laugh. “You can’t? Your drive has always been on the lower side, Aubrey. I know you better than that.”
Her
gaze remained steady even as a blush crept up her cheeks. She stayed dead serious. “My hormones are all over the place. My sex drive is actually higher now that I’m pregnant.”
Damon leaned down, his lips brushing against her ear. “If you really need it,” he murmured, “I can find a safer way to help you.”
“Like what?”
“My hands,” he said lowly. “Or my mouth.”
Her face flushed a deep red as she gave him a light shove. “Behave yourself, Damon.”
Damon gave her a half–smirk. “You started this conversation, Aubrey. How am I supposed to ‘behave‘ when you’re talking about things like that?”
She plopped down on the big bed, propping herself up on her hands. She shot a look at the small bed he’d just moved in, feigning annoyance. “Fine. You want separate beds? Go for it. Let’s see how long you can actually last.”
Damon sat on the twin bed, facing her head–on. “The longest I went was over five years. I missed you so much I had to take matters into my own hands every single night. You really think I can’t handle one more year?”
Aubrey bristled. She grabbed a pillow from the bed and hurled it at him with all her might.
Damon caught it effortlessly with both hands. He let out a low chuckle, then stepped forward to place it back at the head of the bed, smoothing out the wrinkles.
Aubrey wasn’t backing down. “You know what they say. Sleeping in separate beds is the fastest way to kill a relationship.”
“We were apart for five years and I never stopped loving you,” he countered. “Now that I get to see you every day, how is a little bit of
