Chapter89.
Damon looked puzzled. “Aren’t you her best friend? Wouldn’t you know if she came to New Haven City?”

“I don’t know. We haven’t talked in almost a year,” Aubrey Hayes said, a look of disappointment on her face. She placed the peeled egg back on the plate, quickly got up, and went to her room, returning with her phone.
As soon as she sat down, Damon Blackwood asked, “Weren’t you two like best friends? Why haven’t you talked in almost a year?”
“She was pregnant, about to have a baby, then she had to recover after childbirth. And a lot of stuff was going on at my house, a lot of crap, and I was worried my bad mood would affect her,” Aubrey said, pulling up Sierra Vance’s profile on her messaging app and sending her a message as she spoke.
Damon latched onto the important part. “You were in a bad mood?”
Aubrey paused, looking up to meet his gaze. After a moment of hesitation, she quickly explained, “It’s just because of my mom’s passing, nothing else.”
Damon eyed her slightly flustered expression with skepticism.
Aubrey sent the message and stared at the screen, but Sierra didn’t reply.
“Eat your breakfast first,” Damon said softly. “I’ll drive you to work when you’re done.”
Aubrey picked up an egg, took a bite, and mumbled, “No need, I can take the subway myself.”
“It’s on my way. I’ll take you,” Damon said, his tone brooking no argument.
Aubrey looked up at him.
“It really is on my way. Check the GPS if you don’t believe me,” Damon said with a light chuckle.
Aubrey didn’t argue further.
After breakfast, she quickly put on some light makeup, grabbed her briefcase, and followed Damon downstairs.
All the way, she clutched her phone, waiting for Sierra’s text on her messaging app.
Damon, focused on driving, noticed her constantly checking her phone, looking increasingly dejected. “Why don’t you just call her?” he suggested.
Aubrey hesitated for a moment, then couldn’t resist dialing Sierra’s number.
The phone rang for a long time.
When Sierra finally answered, her voice was drowsy and languid. “Bree?”
“Sierra, did I wake you?” Aubrey asked, her voice full of emotion. It had been so long since they’d spoken, and hearing her best friend’s voice made her
realize how much she’d missed her.
“I was up until four this morning getting the baby to sleep.”
“That’s rough. Your husband came to New Haven City; are you here too?”
“No,” Sierra said, her voice cracking with tears. Just thinking about it made her feel incredibly wronged. “He said our son is only six months old, too young, and he needs me to stay in Crestview City to take care of him. His mom is getting old too, and needs me to look after her.”
“So, you quit your job and you’re stuck in Crestview City alone, taking care of a baby and his grandmother?”
“Yeah,” Sierra choked out.
Aubrey didn’t know what to say to comfort her.
Sierra had been spoiled since childhood. After getting married and having a baby, her husband was away, and she’d given up her job to care for a six–month–old baby and an elderly mother–in–law all by herself. It was exhausting.
Aubrey felt a pang of sympathy. “Get some more sleep. Call me back when you’re rested.”
“Okay,” Sierra managed, her voice thick with tears.
After hanging up, Aubrey glared at Damon, displeasure etched on her face. “Doesn’t your company provide housing?”
“Yeah, there are free family apartments, a staff school, a staff hospital. The benefits are pretty good.”
“Then why doesn’t Ryan have his wife and child with him?”
Damon shrugged helplessly. “I don’t know what other people are thinking.”
“That son of a bitch! Gets married, has a kid, and then forgets to appreciate what he has.” Aubrey was indignant, clutching her phone rightly, and muttered angrily, “He’s probably worried about who will take care of his mom, so he’s dumping his responsibility for his mother onto Sierra, leaving her alone in Crestview City to look after his mom and the baby.”
Damon sensed her rising anger and wisely kept quiet, not wanting to become the target of her ire.
Aubrey’s chest tightened with anger. She took a deep breath. “This is the downside of a whirlwind marriage. A mama’s boy! Before marriage, they all pretend to be so devoted, willing to accommodate Sierra in everything. Now that they have a kid, he figures Sierra is stuck with him, and his true, ugly colors are showing”
Damon nodded in agreement. “Yeah, a total mama’s boy.”
Aubrey turned to Damon. “What would you do if you were in his shoes?”
Without hesitation, Damon replied, “Hire a caregiver for my elderly mother and keep my wife and child close. Or, even better, bring the whole family together.”
“Exactly! That’s how a normal man should think.” The more Aubrey thought about it, the more uneasy she felt. She muttered, “There’s definitely something wrong with Ryan.”
Aubrey’s mood remained sour the entire way.
They arrived in front of the firm.
The car came to a stop.
“Thanks,” Aubrey said as she unbuckled her seatbelt, got out of the car, closed the door, walked around the front, and headed toward the firm.
“Aubrey,” Damon called out.
She turned, looking at Damon in the driver’s seat with a questioning gaze.
The man leaned out the window, his elbow resting on the frame, and waved. “Bye, see you tonight.”
Aubrey sighed in exasperation. “Don’t bother looking for me.”
“Then come find me,” Damon said, his eyes crinkling with a smile, looking devastatingly handsome.
Aubrey’s face fell, and she ignored him, striding towards the firm.
Nearby, Garrett witnessed the scene, his eyes turning dark and brooding, his expression sour.
Damon noticed the unfriendly gaze from the man nearby.
As Damon’s eyes met his, the man quickly averted his gaze, grabbed his briefcase, and hurried inside.
That look said it all!
The competition was definitely heating up.
Aubrey Hayes was beautiful, and Damon Blackwood couldn’t help but feel a pang of frustration as he started his car and drove off.
Inside the law firm, Aubrey had just passed the reception desk when her assistant approached with a report. “Ms. Hayes, the water and soil sample reports from the chemical plant’s pollution source are in. Here’s the flash drive.”
“Thank you,” Aubrey said, taking the documents and the drive.
Just then, a man’s sharp, twisted voice came from behind her.
“Thought she was some innocent little thing, but turns out she’s a total player! One guy sending flowers, another giving her rides to work–playing the
field, is she?”
Aubrey balled her fists, her face darkening as she whirled around to glare at Garrett Miller, who had followed her inside. She spat out each word, “Mr. Miller, I can sue you for defamation.”
Garrett scoffed, jealousy twisting his features. Rejection had clearly unhinged him. “Damon’s little pet! Do you even know the law? What I say has nothing to do with you. Did I mention your name? Why are you getting so defensive?”
