A hint of disgust flashed in the assistant’s eyes, but he forced a strained, professional smile. It’s all been handed over to Ms. Hayes.

Garrett, his face cold, stormed into his office, annoyed.

A moment later, he walked past Aubrey’s office with a cup of coffee, pausing at the door, surreptitiously glancing inside.

Aubrey was crouched down, entering the combination on the safe. She opened it, stored all the evidence inside, and then closed the door.

As she stood up and turned around, she saw Garrett lurking at the door.Mr. Miller, is there something you need?

Garrett smirked, holding up his coffee cup.Aubrey, want some coffee?

No, thank you,Aubrey replied coldly, and sat down at her desk.

A sinister smile spread across Garrett’s face. He took a sip of his coffee, then walked past her office and back into his own.

Alex’s flowers were late, but they had arrived.

The receptionist came in holding the bouquet.Ms. Hayes, these are for you.

Aubrey looked up.Could you please take care of them for me?

The receptionist beamed.Okay, I’ll take them!

Sure,Aubrey nodded.

It wasn’t until lunchtime that Sierra finally called.

Aubrey put down her work and answered her phone.

Sierra was crying,

She mostly talked about regretting getting married, regretting having kids, having no freedom, being exhausted, and constantly arguing with Ryan over trivial matters.

Aubrey sensed that Sierra was close to being depressed.

The baby was too young, cried a lot, was always fussy, and had a weak immune system, making her prone to illness.

And then there was her meddling and petty motherinlaw.

In Sierra, Aubrey saw the helplessness of women after marriage.

You really can’t rush into marriage on a whim. You have to thoroughly understand the other person, as well as their family, and whether your values align.

I ordered spicy crawfish for a latenight snack, and my motherinlaw wouldn’t stop nagging me,Sierra wailed. She called me a spendthrift, said I was irresponsible, complained about my diet while breastfeeding, saying I was thoughtless and a glutton. She just wouldn’t shut up, and then she called Ryan.

Didn’t Ryan help you?

He just tells me not to order takeout, but to go out to eat if I want it, and then come home. He wants me to understand how hard it is for his mom, saying she’s been scared of being poor her whole life and is used to being frugal.

Aubrey sighed deeply, feeling sorry for Sierra.

Everyone’s got their own family drama.

She couldn’t interfere in other people’s families to deal with these trivial family matters.

Sierra sniffled and then asked, Bree, are you and Damon together?

No.

Is there really no chance for you two?

No,Aubrey replied heavily.

YouSierra started to say something, but her baby woke up beside her and began to cry. She changed her tone, Bree, I gotta go. My baby’s awake. Gotta change his diaper and feed him.

Okay, you go ahead,Aubrey replied. Sierra hung up quickly.

The entire afternoon, Aubrey’s mood was somber, saddened by her best friend’s marital unhappiness.

As night fell, the city lights began to twinkle.

Aubrey left work and stopped at a small eatery near the subway entrance for some noodles.

She ate while scrolling through her phone.

Almost without thinking, she opened Damon’s messages,

Reason told her to avoid any lingering ties with Damon, to not get caught in an endless entanglement. But her emotions were out of control, consumed by a conflicting desire for him, a longing to see him.

They had seen each other that morning, and now, less than a day later, she missed him terribly.

Damon had mentioned seeing her tonight, and she found herself looking forward to it.

After finishing her dinner, she took the subway home.

It was a little after nine, not too late.

As she walked along the quiet sidewalk leading back to her apartment complex, that old, unsettling feeling crept back in.

From within the dark bushes, she felt like a pair of fierce eyes were fixed on her, and a chilling aura washed over her.

Aubrey stopped walking, looking around, but didn’t spot anyone following her.

Was she just being paranoid?

Her heart pounded in her chest, and her legs felt weak, but she kept walking.

The further she went, the intensely she felt those eyes boring into her back.

An eerie wind swept through, and suddenly, a sharp crack echoed from the bushes:Bang!

Terrified, Aubrey sprinted forward.

She glanced back while running, trying to see what was happening.

Just then, a familiar figure leaped out of a nearby car and plunged into the bushes.

Aubrey skidded to a halt, breathless and anxious, and turned back.

She thought she’d seen Damon.

Suddenly, Damon’s voice emerged from the bushes, Finally caught you! Trying to be spooky, huh?

In that instant, he was like a god descending, capturing her nightmare and saving her terrified heart.

Her eyes burned with emotion, and she felt a surge of gratitude.

Damon emerged from the dark bushes, dragging a woman by the arm.

The middleaged woman was wearing a sanitation worker’s uniform, holding a small fan in her hand, her hair disheveled, head hanging low in the dim streetlight.

Aubrey approached her, clenching her fists in anger. Why were you following

She stopped midsentence, recognizing the woman and her face fell.
