Chapter 92
Morning light streamed through the balcony, seeping through the curtains and bathing the room in brightness.
Aubrey stirred awake, groggily reaching out to touch the empty expanse beside her on the bed.
Cold and empty.

She blinked her eyes open, glancing around, clutching the blanket as she sat up. Damon was nowhere to be seen.
Her phone lay on the bedside table. She picked it up and checked the time.
10:08 AM.
Damon had already left for work. As for her job, she didn’t need to clock in, nor did she have fixed work hours. If nothing important came up, she could sleep in and then head back to the firm.
Aubrey threw back the covers and got out of bed, noticing that her clothes on the floor had been picked up. She went into the bathroom to wash up
Standing in front of the mirror, she saw her reflection. Her fair skin was covered in hickeys, a clear indication of how rough he had been last night.
Her fingertips gently traced the little red marks on her skin, slowly caressing them, a tremor running through her heart.
Scenes from the previous night flashed through her mind, and her cheeks flushed slightly.
As long as she didn’t get greedy for a title, they should be happy, right?
Aubrey smiled knowingly, sped up her washing, got dressed, put on light makeup, and walked out of the bedroom.
On the living room table, Damon had prepared breakfast, along with a note.
She sat down on the chair and picked up the note.
If breakfast is cold, heat it up before eating. I don’t have to work late tonight. I’ll make dinner. Come home early, okay?
Aubrey carefully folded the note, a happy smile gracing her lips, and placed it in a box in the drawer.
She pulled out her phone, brought up Damon’s contact in her messaging app, and typed out a message without hesitation.
Okay, I’ll come home early. And I agree with your solution. We won’t get married, we won’t have kids, we’ll just stay together, supporting each other, living a quiet life.
As she finished typing and was about to hit send, a call suddenly popped up on her screen.
It was an unknown number, with a New Haven City area code.
She didn’t rush to send the message, answering the call first.
The familiar, steady voice of a man came through the phone.“Hello, Aubrey, this is Chase Blackwood.”
Aubrey’s heart clenched, and she swallowed hard.“Mr. Blackwood, hello.”
‘When would you be available to meet?”
With just that one sentence, Aubrey felt like the sky was falling.
Even before meeting, she could already guess what it was about.
A heavy pressure, overwhelming and all–encompassing, descended upon her. Her hand trembled. “I’m free today.”
I’ll send someone to pick you up.”
‘Okay.”
Hanging up, Aubrey opened her messaging app chat with Damon and slowly deleted the message she had just typed.
She threw her phone heavily onto the table, turning her head to look out the window.
New Haven City summers were beautiful–sun–drenched with a pristine, navy–blue sky–but her heart was leaden, and everything she saw was tinged
with sorrow.
If Damon’s father intervened personally, she and Damon wouldn’t even have the chance for a lingering connection; it would be a clean break.
She couldn’t bring herself to eat the breakfast Damon had made for her.

An hour later.
A secluded tea garden, a spacious tea room.
Chase Blackwood, imposing and steady, sat across from Aubrey Hayes.

Aubrey felt dazed, sipping the tea Chase poured for her, listening to his gentle tone as he made polite conversation.
She couldn’t absorb a single word.
His compliments, his admiration, his expressions of helplessness–all were setting the stage for the request to come.
It was the kind of polite preamble most elders would use.
She didn’t say a word the entire time, feeling her heart, which had just begun to rekindle, being swallowed once more by a raging sea.
Incense smoke curled in the air, and the fragrance of tea filled the room.
It wasn’t until Chase got to the point that she snapped back to attention.
“Damon is willing to forgo marriage and children for you, content to live out his days alone. Perhaps he might marry you in retirement. As his father, I can’t bear to see my son waste his precious life on a relationship like this. Aubrey, I’m a traditional father, I respect my son’s choices to a degree, but I cannot accept him remaining unmarried. I desperately want to see the Blackwood family blessed with grandchildren.”
Aubrey lowered her head, her fingers clenched into a cold fist, and nodded.
“You know my eldest son’s profession. No matter how much I pressure him, he refuses to marry, claiming his work is too demanding and dangerous. He lives each day with the mindset that he might have to sacrifice everything for his country and its people. So, all my hopes now rest on Damon.”
Aubrey took a deep breath, suppressing her sorrow, and said politely, “Uncle, you’re worrying too much. Damon and I are not together. I haven’t agreed to his requests, and I won’t in the future.”
“That’s not enough.” Chase sighed, his tone heavy.“My son is stubborn, hopelessly devoted, and fixated. He knows you love him too. If you remain single, he will remain single forever.”
Aubrey felt a sharp pang in her heart, her reddened eyes welling up as she frowned at him.“What do you mean by that, Mr. Blackwood?”
Chase’s tone was earnest. “Either leave, or get married. I know you have a stable job here in New Haven City, so get married. What kind of guy do you like? I’ll set you up.”
Aubrey gave a wry smile, her hand under the table slowly clenching into a fist, fingernails digging into her palm, the pain a mere fraction of what her
heart felt.
I’m sorry, Aubrey. I really don’t know what else to do with this son of mine, so I have to ask for your help.”
Aubrey felt a lump in her chest, as if she was suffocating.
She parted her lips slightly, feigning composure. “Thank you for your kindness, Mr. Blackwood, but I have plenty of suitors. No need for you to introduce me to anyone.”
This…”
I understand. You don’t want Damon to know this was your idea, it would affect your relationship, right?”
Yes.”
Don’t worry, when I make a public commitment to someone else, Damon will have no choice but to move on.” Aubrey picked up her purse and stood ip. “Can you promise me that he won’t do anything stupid when I get married?”
‘No, he’s not that irrational.”
Aubrey bowed her head slightly, then turned and left.
Just as she reached the door, she stopped abruptly, paused for a moment in thought, and then turned back to ask, “Uncle, have you been having Damon followed? Did you know he’s been pursuing me relentlessly lately, and then last night, when you saw us holding hands, you couldn’t wait to come find
me?”
