Chapter91
“Can you?” Damon took her hand, gently rubbing her icy fingertips.
In the middle of summer, her hands were so cold. She must have been terribly frightened just now.
He looked at her pale face, his heart aching.
Yes,” Aubrey nodded, trying to pull her hand away, but found his grip firm, unwilling to let go.
Her gaze fell to his hand enveloping hers. His palm was warm, his fingers long and strong, pale blue veins faintly visible beneath his skin, like steady, ising ridges.
Such a simple gesture of holding sparked a sense of security that spread from her fingertips, quietly taking root in her heart.
How much is the compensation?”
‘A little over $800,000.” Aubrey looked up at Damon, meeting his warm, deep gaze.“Of the million dollars you gave me before, I used some for my nom’s medical treatment, but there’s still some left. The compensation your great–aunt gave my mom, I put it in my dad’s fixed deposit account. I night not be able to pay it all back at once, but I can handle it myself.”
Let’s pay it all at once, so she doesn’t bother you again. I’ll cover whatever’s missing.”
Aubrey shook her head.“I really don’t need you to. There’s something else I need to be honest about.”
‘What is it?”
The two apartments you gave me, the one in Crestview City and the one in New Haven City, I didn’t give them to my brother.”
Damon smiled faintly, ruffling her hair, clearly pleased.“Even better if you didn’t. When I said those harsh things back then, I just wanted to push you o come to New Haven City.”
Aubrey was taken aback, staring up at him.
‘Now that you’re here, I’ve achieved my goal, and you…”
Before he could finish, Aubrey interrupted, shocked, “So, you orchestrated the issues with my apartment that forced my move? And you told Vincent Hall I was in New Haven City, about to join another law firm, so he’d try to poach me? That was you too?”
Damon just smiled, looking down as he gently caressed her fingers.
Annoyed, Aubrey tried to pull her hand away, but he held on tighter.“Let go, Damon. Let go…”
‘No,” Damon said, opening her hand and firmly interlacing his fingers with hers.“Everything I’ve done has been for you.”
Who said you could hold my hand?” Aubrey tugged, but she couldn’t break free.
He started walking toward the apartment complex, pulling her along.
He walked slightly ahead, practically dragging Aubrey along behind him.
Jnder the warm yellow glow of the streetlights, the hazy light enveloped him, making him look like a dazzling star in the night sky. He was so tall and mposing, handsome and upright, his sculpted profile almost otherworldly.
His hand was warm, and his love was unwavering.
Suddenly, Aubrey thought Damon’s solution didn’t seem so bad after all.
ust being with him forever, loving each other, relying on each other, with no need for titles or paperwork.
As they walked, Aubrey closed the slight distance between them, quickening her pace to walk shoulder to shoulder with him, no longer trying to pull her hand from his tight grip.
Their shadows stretched long and distorted on the sidewalk under the streetlights, and in the cool night air, her heart felt grounded.
Damon, what are you doing here?” Aubrey asked, curiosity piqued.
Ever since you reported the stalker, I’ve been keeping watch here, waiting for this mystery person to show up.”
Aubrey turned her head to look at him, surprised. “The day I reported it?”
“Yeah, Damon responded.

A warm current surged through Aubrey’s heart, her eyes growing hot and her nose tingling.

The security cameras hadn’t captured the stalker, and even the police thought she was mentally unstable, too sensitive. Even she herself had started to think it was all a hallucination.
Yet Damon had been discreetly staking out her usual route home from work at night, all to catch this mysterious stalker.
That’s right!
It couldn’t have been a coincidence that he caught him on the first try, could it?
He must have been lying in wait for a long time to get the chance.
“Didn’t you say you were busy lately, working overtime?” Aubrey leaned closer, pressing her body against his arm, wanting to be as close as possible.
Damon smiled faintly, lowering his gaze to Aubrey.
From initially resisting holding hands and being pulled along, to now walking alongside him, willingly intertwining her fingers with his, and even leaning closer to him.
Damon noticed all of these subtle changes.
His smile grew brighter, his eyes filled with an ardent, profound affection.
“I am genuinely busy, but this concerns your safety, so I can’t put it off.”
“Thank you, Damon.”
“There’s no need for formalities between us. Just remember, we’re a unit, what’s mine is yours. If you can’t handle something, come to me, okay?”
Aubrey was too moved for words and simply nodded.
They entered the apartment complex and went upstairs.
Standing in front of her door, Aubrey unlocked it and pushed it open, but Damon suddenly stopped.
Aubrey turned to look at him.
He didn’t move, seemingly not intending to go inside, quite unlike the previous two times when he’d made excuses and playfully forced his way in.
Damon leaned slightly against the doorframe, his shoulder resting against it.“Tomorrow, go to the police station and file a report. Give them all the information about the stalker, just to be safe.”
Aubrey subtly smoothed out the fabric of her dress, the question,“Aren’t you coming in?” stuck in her throat, teasing her heart with its unresolved
tension.
In truth, she had been thinking about him all day.
Knowing full well that nothing could come of it, that she shouldn’t get close, she still couldn’t fight the physical attraction, the overwhelming tide of onging.
She simply nodded, remaining silent.
Damon gazed at her, his deep, dark eyes clouded with an unreadable intensity, neither entering nor leaving, simply standing and watching, as if waiting for her to make a decision.
Whether to invite him in, or send him away.
They remained in this tense standoff for what felt like an eternity. Damon was close to losing his grip. This woman was testing his patience.
Getting her to take the lead was like trying to reach the moon.
He tentatively asked, “Do you want me to come in?”
Aubrey hesitated, glancing down as she slowly changed her shoes, quietly murmuring, “Whatever you want…”
That single “Whatever you want” was all it took to ignite Damon’s desire.
He stepped inside, shutting the door behind him.
As Aubrey looked up, the man’s arms wrapped around her waist, his hand gently gripping the back of her head as he spun her around, pinning her against the nearby wall.
She was caught completely off guard by the kiss.
