Chapter 11
“What did you just say?” June whispered, all the blood draining from her face. She stumbled backward, her perfectly manicured hands trembling. “My parents… their legs?”
We barely got them out alive, Miss Quinn!” the guard gasped, wiping a smear of dark blood from his face. The house was a slaughterhouse. We brought them back here. They’re outside in the armored truck.”
June didn’t wait. She shoved past Victor and sprinted out of the warehouse, her high heels clicking frantically against the concrete.
When she reached the heavily armored SUV, she yanked the back door open.
The stench of coagulated blood and raw fear hit her like a physical blow.
Arthur and Sylvia were huddled in the backseat, shivering like beaten dogs. Everything below their knees was gone. The stumps were wrapped in blood–soaked bedsheets, the cuts terrifyingly, surgically clean.
“Mom! Dad!” June screamed, her mind finally breaking. She clawed at her own hair, her eyes wide with unadulterated horror. “Who did this?! Which son of a btch did this?! I’ll fcking kill them!”
June… you have to get revenge for us!” Sylvia sobbed, looking pathetic and hollowed out. Her arrogant, aristocratic grace was completely gone. It was Josie! She snuck into our room while we were asleep and just… she hacked them off!”
Arthur ground his teeth, his face a sickly shade of gray from blood loss. “She didn’t even want us to get them reattached. She threw our legs into the dumpster downstairs. The stray dogs… they tore them to pieces right in front of us.”
“What?” June was floored. Her brain refused to process the words. “How is that even possible? Mom, Dad, you’re both Supers! Josie is just a Norm! She was a weak, pathetic loser before today. How could she overpower you?!”
I’m telling you, it was her!” Sylvia wailed, tears streaming down her face, mixing with the dirt and gore. “She’s a psycho, June! A total monster! What are we going to do? Look at us!”
‘Stop crying and listen to me!” Arthur barked, his voice hoarse. “Our neighbors… they turned into monsters. everyone they see. If you get bit, you’re infected!”
They’ve lost their minds. They’re biting
We barely made it back here. The hospital is a death trap. The whole world has gone to hell. These things are everywhere. The police, the government… it’s all shut down. It’s total chaos.”
June, the apocalypse you warned us about… it’s here. We can’t go to a doctor. We have to hide.”
June forced down the homicidal rage boiling in her chest. She took a deep, shaky breath, looking at Victor, who had just walked up behind her. Victor,” June said, her voice dropping to a cold, calculated whisper. The world has officially ended. There are no rules anymore Tell your men to hit the streets. Take everything that isn’t nailed down.”
Victor realized the gravity of the situation. He didn’t waste a second. He turned and started barking orders, deploying his heavily armed crew to begin the looting.
June turned back to her crippled parents, forcing a gentle, comforting smile she didn’t feel. “Don’t worry. You’re Supers. Your bodies are tougher than normal people; you’ll survive this. Once we find a Metallic Super, I’ll pay whatever it takes to have them forge a pair of prosthetics for you
“Yes, exactly!‘ Sylvia chirped, nodding frantically, clinging to June’s words like a lifeline. “We’ll do whatever you say,
sweetie!”
June’s eyes darkened as she looked away.
