Chapter 123
“The rain is definitely dying down. Give it a few more days and it’ll be over,” Josie said, tilting her chin toward the city. “If I had to guess, the low–lying areas downtown are completely underwater by now. The base is on high ground, so they’re probably dry for the moment. But with that many humans packed into one spot? The Mutants won’t be able to resist the smell. They’re coming for them next.”
“They’re probably having a hell of a time over there right now. Too bad we’re too far away to grab some popcorn and watch the shitshow.” Zane let out a long breath of relief. “Thank God for that. We haven’t slept in five days straight.”
“Catch some Z’s while you can,” Josie said, looking back at him. “Things are about to get crazy again very soon.
Zane immediately tilted the umbrella further over Josie’s head. “How do you mean?”
“The Basic Undead should all be Tier–1 by now. And if I’m right, Tier–2s have already started showing up,” Josie said. “I haven’t told you what makes a Tier–2 different yet, have I?”
“No. Hit me,” Zane nodded, bracing himself for whatever nightmare was coming next.
“Basics and Tier–ls are brainless. They’re driven purely by the instinct to feed. But Tier–2s? They’re a whole different game,” Josie said, her voice flat and steady. “They’re flexible, agile, and their faces look almost normal–just pale. Most importantly, they have the IQ of a three–year–old.”
“In other words, they don’t have rotting meat falling off them anymore. No more gross–out factor. Their bodies are completely intact.” “Their movement is human–like. Their joints are fluid–sometimes even more flexible than ours.”
“They’re pale as a corpse. Well… technically, they are corpses.”
Zane stared in shock. “They’re evolving… to look like us.”
“Basically,” Josie nodded. “The further they evolve, the more human they look. Eventually, they’ll look exactly like us.”
Zane looked even more rattled. “Then… are they still people?”
“Hell no.” Josie rolled her eyes. “They’re a completely different species. They just wear our faces.”
“Will we… coexist?” Zane’s voice shook.
“Dream on.” Josie shook her head. “It’s us or them. We’re both fighting for the same world. Kill or be killed. As for who wins in the end… I don’t know.”
In her past life, she’d only lasted ten years after the world ended.
When she died, the Undead King had just breached her base.
No one made it out alive.
Maybe other bases survived.
Who knows?
But this time, she was going to see how the war between humans and the undead actually ended.
Josie suddenly looked up. “The rain’s letting up.”
She was right.
The downpour had slowed to a light drizzle.
She looked at the sky; the heavy clouds were finally thinning out.
“Go get some rest,” Josie said. “The second the rain stops, we’re out. All of us. We hunt, we get
before the undead do.”
Cores, and we level up. We have to hit Tier 3
“Otherwise, we’re just dinner.”
“Intelligent zombies don’t just roam. They coordinate.”
“They understand the Elemental Cycle. They know tactics and strategy.
“Plenty of geniuses turned when the world ended. Once they wake up and get their brains back, that’s when the real horror starts.”
“Pray we don’t run into a high–IQ freak too soon.”
“If we do, it’s a total wipeout. Game over in minutes.”
