The water on the ground did the heavy lifting, conducting the current and frying entire clusters of them in a single blast.

But even as a Tier2 Lightning Super, he couldn’t stop them all. The mutated beasts just kept coming, wave after wave, throwing themselves into the meat grinder without a second thought.

Do something, fast!Zane bark on thought.

I’m on it,Josie said, her eyes fixed

His face was pale, his expression dead serious like he’d just realized something terrible.

on the

Die Hold the line. I’m going to rip those weeds out first!

The words had barely left her mouth.

In a flash, Josie pulled a massive piece of excavator straight out of her space.

She hopped into the cab, umbrella still in hand, and slammed the ignition. The engine roared to life as she drove the beast forward, the giant bucket swinging out.

One scoop, and she ripped a massive chunk of mutated water weeds right out of the ground.

The mutant weeds came alive. They writhed and coiled, snaking toward Josie like they were starving.

Josie didn’t hesitate. She lit dozens of torches and planted them in a wide circle around her.

Plants hated fire. Those weeds craved her flesh, but the heat kept them at bay. They were caught between their hunger and their fear.

Josie’s throwing knives blurred as they flew. Zip. Zip. Zip. She shredded the mutant weeds into a mess of green pulp.

Weapons made from Metal Manipulations weren’t exactly the best for hacking through vines. They lacked the right kind of bite. But she didn’t have much of a choice.

Her fivefoot greatsword was way too bulky for these skinny, annoying little things. It just didn’t feel right in her hand for this kind of fight. Luckily, these mutant plants and bugs were still in the early stages of evolution. Her Metallicinfused blades were still sharp enough to get the job done.

It was a chaotic split. Josie held off the mutant flora while the Blue Owl Squad locked horns with the mutant beasts.

Everyone was pushed to the limit, barely keeping their heads above water as they fought for their lives.

They held the line for two straight hours before the first wave finally broke and retreated.

But a quick look at the horizon told the real storya massive, dark surge of mutant life was still heading their way. There were even more of But a them now.

Josie yanked barrel after barrel of gasoline and diesel out of her space. Take these!she yelled. Dump them in the water! We’re burning these bastards to hell!

The Blue Owl squad members grabbed the buckets and started torching the place.

In an instant, the scent of a massive BBQ filled the entire yard.

No sleeping tonight. Or at least, we rotate shifts,Josie said.

This is just the beginning.

Get used to it. From now on, this is the new normal.

Their faces were grim. Everyone felt the weight of her words.

The rain should let up in about ten days, maybe two weeks,Josie said, crossing her arms. Once it stops, we either pack up and move or we turn this place into a fortress. What’s the plan?

Zane thought it over, his expression serious. What do you suggest?

Me? I don’t really care,Josie shrugged. If it were just me, I could survive anywhere. Even with Winnie in tow, I could protect her and move around easily.

But this spot isn’t bad,she added. It’s remote. Less human scentmeans we won’t draw as much attention from the Undead or the Mutants. Those big bases? They’re just giant targets for an Alpha. It’s only a matter of time before they get hit.

We’re still lowlevel,Zane admitted. Hunkering down out here might be the smart move. How about we stay put for now?
