Chapter 146
As Winnie struggled to get Josie’s clothes off and wash her down, she saw the damage. There were cuts and massive purple bruises all over her body.
It made Winnie’s heart ache just looking at them.
Josie was out there putting her life on the line while Winnie stayed back in safety and comfort.
It didn’t feel right. Not at all.
She made a silent vow: starting tomorrow, she was going to step up her cooking game. She had to make sure Josie was eating the best meals possible. It was the only way she could pay her back.
After a long struggle, Winnie finally finished the bath, dried her off, and changed her into a fresh pair of pajamas.
Grabbing the pile of dirty clothes, Winnie quietly slipped out of the room.
Josie rolled over, drifting into a deeper sleep.
In her dream, she was back. Back in her past life. Back in the bloody chaos of The Pit.
She only had one fight left. If she won, she’d earn her freedom and finally become a normal citizen of the base.
But before she could get her hands on that ID, a man appeared like a god–or a demon–dropping straight from the sky.
He scanned the crowd and locked onto her with pinpoint accuracy.
Then, he reached out and ripped her heart right out of her chest.
He said, “Josie, I found you. Once I eat you, I’ll be able to… wait, why are you so weak?”
Josie’s eyes snapped open. She bolted upright in bed.
Her forehead was drenched in a cold sweat.
She remembered now!
Right before she died in her last life, Cyrus had said it. He said if he ate her, he’d gain something.
Eat what?
Her heart?
And gain what?
A level up?
But why her?
Why would eating her heart make him stronger?
What kind of secret was buried inside her?
And then there was the fact that Cyrus had been hunting her in both lifetimes.
How did he know where to look?
Suddenly, Josie started to doubt everything.

Was this world even real?
If it was real, how the hell was she able to be reborn?
Josie spiraled. Her mind was a mess, teetering on the edge of a total breakdown.
Then, a knock at the door cut through the noise. It was Zane. “Josie? You awake?”
His voice snapped her back to reality.
She looked down at her hands.
The lines on her palms were sharp, clear, and vivid. It felt real.
So, what if the world was a lie? What if it was all fake?
If she decided it was real, then it was real. Period.
This was her world now. She was going to own it.
“I’m up.” Josie tossed the covers aside and walked to the door barefoot. She pulled it open. “What’s the word?”

Zane froze. He definitely hadn’t expected her to be… underdressed. He jerked his gaze away, staring at the floor. “I, uh… I have an update on the Agri–Science Institute. Need to report in.”
Josie needed that intel. She nodded. “Give me thirty minutes.
“Got it!” Zane turned and practically bolted down the hall.
