Winnie, the Personal Chef, rolled out a massive food cart.
In seconds, the table was loaded with dishes–all of it light, easy–to–digest food.
The guys wolfed it down like a pack of starving wolves. They ate fast, survival–style.
Once they were stuffed and the plates were cleared, it was business time.
The dining table turned into a war room.
Winnie served tea to everyone and then quietly stepped aside.
Zane gripped his mug, his expression grim. “The run to a

“The route to the Agri–Science Institute takes few small towns. But when we got there, they were ghost towns. Not a soul in sight.”
“Like you said, at the start of the collapse, most of them were just Basic Undead. If you had a weapon and half a brain, you could take
‘em.”
“The guys in those towns? Handling a few shamblers shouldn’t have been a problem for them.”
“So why were the towns empty? Why was everyone gone?”
“We got our answer pretty quick.”
“We passed this massive old locust tree. Its roots… they were
buried under a mountain of bleached bones.”
“If I had to guess, that tree ate every single person in those towns.”
“By the time we tried to back out, it was too late. The damn thing had already locked onto us.”
“We scrambled to fight back. We burned through almost all our juice, but we were stuck in a stalemate. We couldn’t take it down.”
“We were ready to go out in a blaze of glory–just one last desperate push. But then, things shifted.”
Josie arched an eyebrow, finally hooked. “Backup showed up?”
Zane nodded. “The Agri–Science Institute sent in drones to bail us out.”
“Gotta say, pesticides are the real deal. The moment that stuff hit the tree, it went nuts. It shriveled up right then and there.”
“That’s how we managed to get the hell out.”
“When we reached the Agri–Science Institute, the staff there thought we were with the government. Once they realized we were just a private squad, they looked pretty let down.”
“Still, they took the deal. They accepted the supplies we brought and gave us the pesticides we wanted. But the Director of the Institute said he wants to talk to you personally.”
Josie looked surprised. “Talk to me? About what? Shouldn’t he be dealing with the base?”

Zane shook his head. “I’ve got no clue. I’m just the messenger. He wouldn’t tell me jack.”
Josie shrugged. “Fine. I’ll head over and see what’s up.”

“But for today, we have bigger fish to fry,” Josie added. “While the weather’s holding, we’re gonna reinforce the place and clear out any Mutant Flora in the area.”
“If we’re staying here for a bit, we need to make sure the perimeter is dead quiet.”
“Got it!” everyone barked in unison.
Meeting over. Everyone rolled up their sleeves and got to work.
It was a crew of solid guys–plenty of muscle and energy to burn. They moved fast.
By noon, the surrounding lawn had been stripped completely clean. Not a single weed left standing.
I don’t care if they’re mutated or not. We’re ripping it all out,” she added.

We’ve got plenty of food and gear. We don’t need to play pioneer and start a garden just to prove we’ve got the survival gene.

The next few days were a total grind.
Josie was finally healed up. She was ready to head to the Agri–Science Institute and see what the hell was going on for herself.
Coincidentally, the Base had also picked today to head back to the Agri–Science Institute.
The two groups ran into each other. Again.
