Luckily, these researchers actually liked farming. Fighting wasn’t their thing.
So, they went all–in on agriculture.
They even leveled up their powers just to grow better crops.
Fine. To each their own. Farming was a solid path anyway.
Right after they got settled, someone came running up. “Ms. Quinn, people from the base are here. They want a word.”
“Talk to me? Who is it?” Josie raised an eyebrow.
“Said his name is Cole. Everyone calls him Chairman Cole.”
“Oh, him. That slick bastard,” Josie nodded. “I’ll go see what shit he’s trying to pull.”
She headed over.
Before the apocalypse, Chairman Cole ran logistics and security. He had been sitting on a mountain of supplies.
When the world went to hell, he was smart enough to keep a tight grip on everything he had.
He used those resources to claw his way up to Chairman of Logistics once the base was established.
He was a total pro–a smooth talker who knew exactly how to read the room.
The moment he saw Josie, he rushed over with a huge, fake smile. No ego, just pure “charm.
“Miss Quinn! It’s an absolute honor to finally meet you!”
They say it’s hard to hit a guy who’s smiling at you.
Josie didn’t have any personal beef with Chairman Cole, so she didn’t give him the cold shoulder. She wasn’t exactly warm, either. She just gave him a curt nod. “Take a seat.”
“Sure, sure.” Chairman Cole didn’t seem to care about the cold shoulder. He kept a wide smile plastered on his face. “I’m here to clear the air, Miss Quinn. And, hopefully, talk a little business.”
I’m listening,” Josie said. Her face was a mask, giving nothing away.
Winnie brought in some tea and quickly slipped back out.
Lane watched her go, his eyes trailing her back. She looked familiar. He’d definitely seen her somewhere before.
“Eyes over here,” Josie snapped, rapping her knuckles on the table. “Cut the crap. What’s the status of the base?”
Lane snapped his attention back to her, looking eager. “So, I heard the Agri–Science team followed you back? Look, I’m here to make a deal. We need pesticides. Price is no object–credits, supplies, you name it.”
Josie nodded.
His attitude was decent enough.
At least he knew how to play ball. No bullying, no strong–arming, just straight business.
“Do
you even have the authority to call the shots for the Base?” Josie asked. “Last I checked, we were still on your Most Wanted‘ list.”
“Look, it was all a big misunderstanding!” Lane said quickly. “The board met, and we all agreed–the way the base handled you and the Blue Owl Squad before was totally out of line.”
“We’ve decided to drop all the charges. Your records are cleared, and every member of the Blue Owl Squad gets their status and old ranks back.” You’re welcome back to the base anytime. Honestly, you’ll have free rein to do whatever you want.”
Josie smirked. “Oh? Am I supposed to say thank you now?”
“No, no, not at all,” Lane said, waving his hands. “Even if you don’t want to come back, we can still be good neighbors. We want to keep things peaceful.
